In a sunny meadow, a small mouse named Pippa lived in a cozy burrow under a mossy log. Her honey-brown fur glowed in the morning light, and her amber eyes sparkled with curiosity. Every day she packed her woven grass satchel with berries and nuts. 'Time to explore!' she squeaked, twitching her whiskers. The world was warm and full of buzzing insects and swaying grasses. 1
One hot afternoon, Pippa followed a zigzag path through tall ferns. Suddenly, she stopped. A single fern stood apart, its leaves sparkling white with frost! Pippa blinked her round amber eyes. 'Frost? In summer?' she whispered. She reached out a tiny pink nose. The air around the fern felt cool and fresh. 'How can this be?' she wondered, her tail curling with excitement. 2
Pippa crept closer and parted the icy leaves. Beneath them, tiny insects moved slowly, their bodies shimmering with frosty light. One had pale ice-blue wings and silver antennae. 'Hello,' Pippa said softly. The insect looked up with dark round eyes. 'I am Wisp,' it said in a tinkling voice. 'Welcome to our frosty home.' Pippa's heart raced with wonder. 3
Wisp explained that the frost never melted, even on the hottest days. 'Our family needs the cold,' Wisp said. 'We cannot live in the warm sun.' Pippa watched as more insects gathered—some mint-green with white speckles, others like tiny snowflakes. A small green one named Moss zoomed around Pippa's ears. 'You're big!' Moss chirped. Pippa giggled. 'And you're fast!' she replied. 4
Pippa visited the fern every day. She brought cool dew drops and told the insects about the meadow. Moss loved to ride on her tail. Wisp taught her how frost forms and why shade matters. 'You are different from us,' Wisp said gently. 'But your kindness makes you special.' Pippa felt warm inside, even in the cool air. She promised to keep their secret safe. 5
But one morning, the sun blazed hotter than ever. The meadow grasses drooped, and the stream ran low. When Pippa reached the fern, she gasped. The frost was melting! Tiny droplets ran down the leaves. The insects huddled together, their glow flickering. 'The heat is too strong,' Wisp said sadly. 'Our home is fading.' Pippa's whiskers drooped. She had to help. 6
Pippa raced home to her big brother Bramble. He was tall and sturdy, with grey-brown fur and a nick in one ear. 'Bramble!' she cried. 'The frosty fern is melting, and the insects need cold!' Bramble listened with deep brown eyes. 'We can build them a new home,' he said calmly. 'We'll need cool leaves, shade, and teamwork.' Pippa nodded, her amber eyes shining. 7
Bramble fetched his leather belt and tool pouch. 'First, we find the coolest leaves in the forest,' he said. They searched under rocks and near the stream. Pippa filled her grass satchel with damp, dark leaves. Bramble carried big leafy branches on his broad shoulders. Moss and Wisp followed, guiding them to hidden cool spots. 'Hurry!' Moss squeaked. 'The sun is getting hotter!' 8
They found a shady hollow beneath a hawthorn bush. Bramble showed Pippa how to layer leaves to trap the cool air. Pippa arranged the frosty fern leaves in a circle. 'We'll make a sanctuary,' she said. Moss and the other insects brought tiny pebbles and dewdrops. Wisp directed everyone with gentle wisdom. Slowly, a new frosty home began to grow. Pippa's tail curled with hope. 9
All afternoon they worked. Pippa's small paws were tired, but she kept going. Bramble dug a shallow pool for cool water. Moss zipped back and forth, carrying tiny ice crystals from the old fern. 'This will be even better!' Moss cheered. The insects glowed brighter as the shade grew deeper. Pippa smiled. 'Being different helped us,' she thought. 'The frost is a gift.' 10
As the sun began to set, the new sanctuary was ready. Cool leaves formed a thick roof, and the frost sparkled inside. Wisp glided to the center. 'You have saved our family,' Wisp said softly. 'Your difference—your warm heart—made this possible.' Pippa's amber eyes filled with happy tears. The insects danced around her, their icy glow lighting the dusk. Bramble gave her a proud nod. 11
The next day, the summer heat returned, but the sanctuary held strong. Pippa visited every morning with fresh dew. Moss taught her a frosty song, and Wisp told stories of long-ago winters. 'You are always welcome here,' Wisp said. Pippa knew that being different was not strange—it was a special purpose. She skipped home, her moss-green smock fluttering in the breeze. 12
Word spread through the meadow about the frosty fern and the kind mouse. Other animals came to see, but they respected the insects' home. Pippa explained, 'Everyone has a place where they belong.' Bramble built a small bench of soft moss for visitors. The frost-loving insects thrived, and the meadow grew greener around them. Pippa's heart felt full. 13
One warm evening, Pippa sat by the sanctuary with Moss on her shoulder. 'Why did you help us?' Moss asked. Pippa thought. 'Because you needed me,' she said. 'And because being different is what makes each of us special.' Moss's black eyes sparkled. 'You're the best kind of different,' Moss said. Pippa giggled, and her whiskers twitched with joy. 14
As summer faded, the fern's frost glowed like a tiny moon in the meadow. Pippa knew that soon autumn would come, then winter, and the insects would be safe. She had learned that differences are not something to hide but something to celebrate. With her satchel full of cool leaves, she promised to always protect her frosty friends.
