In a hot, sandy desert, a little orange lizard named Leo discovers a small green cactus hiding behind a rock. The cactus is shy and silent, with tiny dark eyes and a little bud on top, and Leo decides to take care of it. He finds a gentle spot for it, chases away bugs, cleans its spines, and talks to it every day, promising that one day it will bloom. The two become best friends in the big, empty desert.
When the dry season arrives, the sun grows hotter and the sand burns Leo's toes. The cactus looks thirsty and wrinkled, so Leo searches for water, carrying drops in his mouth and digging a hole to catch morning dew. His friends, the beetles and ants, tell him the cactus will never bloom, but Leo keeps working and waiting. A ladybug joins him, and eventually the beetles and ants help too, rolling dew and carrying seeds. Leo learns patience and the value of believing in a friend, even when the work is hard and the rain does not come.
This gentle children's tale is about perseverance, kindness, and teamwork. Young readers will follow Leo through the long dry season as he protects his friend and holds on to hope. The story shows that good things take time and that caring for someone else can bring a whole community together. A Chapter from the Book
The Golden Cactus Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN
In the hot, sandy desert, the sun shone bright and the air was dry. Leo, a little lizard with warm orange skin and tiny dark speckles, scurried over the dunes. His big amber eyes sparkled as he explored. He loved the desert, but sometimes he wished for something new. Then, behind a rock, he spotted a small green cactus. It was round and plump, with tiny dark eyes and short pale spines. Leo's heart leaped with joy. 1
Leo crept closer to the cactus. It looked shy and quiet, with little rosy blush spots on its sides. 'Hello,' Leo whispered. The cactus didn't speak, but its tiny eyes blinked. Leo decided to take care of it. He found a spot where the sun was gentle and the sand was soft. 'I will keep you safe,' he promised. The cactus seemed to trust him, and Leo felt happy. 2
Every day, Leo visited the cactus. He chased away bugs and cleaned the sand from its spines. The cactus had a little bud on top that grew a tiny bit each week. Leo talked to it and told stories. 'You'll see,' he said, 'one day you'll bloom.' The cactus leaned toward Leo as if listening. They became best friends in the big, empty desert. 3
But the dry season came, and the sun grew hotter. The sand burned Leo's little toes, and the wind blew dusty gusts. The cactus looked thirsty, its green body a little wrinkled. Leo searched for water, but the desert was dry. He remembered a tiny puddle under a rock and raced to it. He carried drops of water in his mouth and sprinkled them on the cactus. 'Don't worry,' he said, 'I'll take care of you.' 4
Days turned into weeks, and still no rain. Leo felt tired, but he never gave up. He dug a little hole around the cactus to catch morning dew. He fanned it with his tail when the sun was too strong. The cactus's bud grew a little bigger, but it didn't open. Leo's friends, the beetles and the ants, said, 'Why do you bother? It will never bloom.' But Leo just smiled and kept working. 5
One afternoon, a hot wind blew so hard that sand filled the air. Leo hid behind a rock, but he worried about the cactus. When the wind stopped, he rushed back. The cactus was covered in sand! Leo carefully brushed it off with his tiny claws. 'You're safe now,' he said. The cactus's eyes looked grateful. Leo felt proud that he had protected his friend. 6
As the weeks passed, Leo grew more patient. He learned to wait quietly, watching the sky for clouds. He told the cactus, 'Patience is hard, but I believe in you.' The cactus's bud was now quite large, but still closed. Leo never stopped hoping. He knew that good things take time. 7
One day, Leo noticed a tiny ladybug on the cactus. 'Hello,' said the ladybug. 'I'm looking for a home.' Leo welcomed her and showed her the cactus. 'This is my friend,' he said. 'We're waiting for rain.' The ladybug decided to stay and help. Together, they kept the cactus safe and clean. Leo was glad to have a helper. 8
But the dry season dragged on. The puddle under the rock dried up completely. Leo had to travel farther each day to find water. His little legs ached, but he didn't complain. The cactus looked very thirsty, its spines drooping. Leo whispered, 'Hold on, just a little longer.' He shared the last drops of water he found. The cactus seemed to smile, and Leo felt a warm glow inside. 9
Leo's friends, the beetles and ants, saw how hard he worked. They decided to help too. The beetles rolled little balls of dew from the leaves, and the ants carried seeds to the cactus. 'We believe in you, Leo,' they said. Leo was touched. With teamwork, they kept the cactus alive. The cactus's bud grew even bigger. 10
Then, one morning, Leo felt something different in the air. It was cool and damp. He looked up and saw dark clouds gathering. 'Could it be?' he whispered. The cactus's eyes widened. A single drop of rain fell on Leo's nose. Then another, and another. Soft rain began to fall on the desert, gentle and steady. Leo danced with joy, and the cactus drank the water. 11
The rain fell all day and all night. Leo stayed by the cactus, letting the water soak into the sand. The cactus's wrinkled body plumped up and turned bright green. Its spines stood up straight. Leo watched as the bud began to tremble. 'Is it time?' he asked. The cactus seemed to nod. Slowly, the bud opened, petal by petal. Leo held his breath. 12
The bud opened into a beautiful golden flower! Then another, and another, until the cactus wore a crown of golden blooms. They shone like little suns in the desert. Leo gasped. 'You did it!' he cheered. The cactus's tiny eyes sparkled with happiness. The ladybug and the beetles and ants all came to see. 'It's amazing!' they said. Leo felt so proud of his friend. 13
The golden flowers smelled sweet, and their petals were soft. Leo sat beside the cactus, watching the bees come to visit. 'You see,' Leo said, 'patience brings rewards.' The cactus leaned toward him, and Leo knew it was saying thank you. The desert was full of color and life. Leo's heart was full.
