Sophie sat at her little desk, her blue ink pen scratching softly on paper. She drew a butterfly with careful, curvy lines. Its wings were deep blue, shiny like wet ink. Sophie smiled. 'You're my best drawing ever,' she whispered. The clock ticked past bedtime, but Sophie didn't want to stop. Finally, she placed the drawing on her windowsill and climbed into bed, her yellow star pajamas crumpled around her. 1
Sophie's room was quiet and dark. The moon peeked through her window, casting a silver glow on the drawing. Sophie's eyes grew heavy, but she kept them open just a little. The butterfly on the paper seemed to shimmer. 'Did it move?' she wondered. She rubbed her hazel eyes and stared harder. The ink wings fluttered, just a tiny bit. Sophie's heart beat fast. Something magical was happening. 2
At midnight, the butterfly lifted off the page! Its paper-thin wings flapped silently. Sophie sat up in bed, her mouth open wide. The ink butterfly danced in the moonlight, its blue body glossy and bright. It flew to the window and slipped through the crack. Sophie jumped up and ran to the sill. 'Come back!' she called softly. But the butterfly was already gone, a tiny blue speck in the night sky. 3
The ink butterfly soared over a moonlit garden. Flowers closed their petals for the night, but the butterfly tickled them awake. It sipped dew from a rose and left a trail of tiny blue sparkles. 'What a lovely place!' it thought. It fluttered past a sleepy cat, who blinked and yawned. The butterfly looped around a tree and then flew higher, eager to see more of the world. 4
Next, the butterfly flew over rooftops. Windows glowed with warm light, like tiny stars. It peeked through one window and saw a child reading a bedtime story. The butterfly tapped on the glass, and the child looked up in surprise. 'A blue butterfly!' the child whispered. The butterfly wiggled its wings and flew on. It left a pattern of golden window dots on its wings, shining like little lanterns. 5
The butterfly glided down a sleepy street. Streetlamps flickered, and a gentle breeze carried it along. It saw a night watchman yawning and a dog curled up on a doorstep. The butterfly landed on a mailbox and rested. 'I wish Sophie could see this,' it thought. Then it noticed a silver swirl of moonlight on the pavement and added it to its wings, a shimmering pattern. 6
The moon watched from the sky, a big silver smile. 'Little butterfly, you are far from home,' it said softly. The butterfly looked up. 'I want to see everything!' it chirped. The moon chuckled. 'Then follow the stars. They will guide you.' The butterfly nodded and fluttered toward a twinkling star. The moon's light wrapped around it like a warm blanket, keeping it safe. 7
The butterfly flew over a dark forest. It wasn't scared, because the moon lit the path. It saw fireflies dancing and owls blinking. A friendly firefly buzzed close. 'You're new here,' said the firefly. 'I'm on an adventure!' said the butterfly. They flew together for a while, and the firefly showed the butterfly a secret pond where stars reflected like diamonds. The butterfly added a diamond pattern to its wings. 8
Far away, Sophie waited by the window. She couldn't sleep. She worried the butterfly might be lost or cold. 'Please come back,' she whispered. She left the window open and curled up in her chair, her blue pen still in her hand. The night grew quiet, and Sophie's eyes slowly closed. She dreamed of flying butterflies and starry skies. 9
The butterfly wasn't lost. It was having the time of its life! It swooped through a carnival, though it was closed for the night. It rode a breeze over a river and saw fish leap. It visited a train station where a lonely cat sat. The butterfly danced around the cat, and the cat purred. 'Thank you for the company,' said the cat. The butterfly left a swirl of silver whiskers on its wings. 10
As the sky began to turn pink, the butterfly felt a tug at its heart. It missed Sophie. 'Time to go home,' it said. It flew back over the rooftops, the gardens, and the sleepy streets. The moon smiled. 'Good journey, little one,' it said. The butterfly's wings were now covered with patterns: moon swirls, window dots, garden lines, and star diamonds. Each pattern sparkled in the dawn light. 11
Sophie woke with a start. The sun was rising, and something tapped on the window. It was the butterfly! Sophie gasped. Its wings were no longer plain blue ink. They were covered with beautiful new patterns—silver swirls, gold dots, and green lines. 'You came back!' Sophie cried. The butterfly landed on her finger and fluttered its wings proudly. 12
Sophie stared in wonder. 'Where did you go?' she asked. The butterfly couldn't speak, but it danced a little dance, showing her the patterns. Sophie understood. 'You visited the moon and the gardens and the rooftops!' She laughed. The butterfly flew to her desk and landed on the drawing. It fit perfectly, but now the drawing was alive with color. Sophie grabbed her pen and began to draw the new patterns. 13
Sophie drew and drew, her blue ink pen flying across the paper. She added silver moons, gold windows, and green gardens to her picture. The butterfly watched, its tiny eyes bright. 'You're my best creation ever,' Sophie said. The butterfly fluttered onto her nose and kissed it with its wings. Sophie giggled.
