Mia, an eight-year-old girl in a yellow raincoat, and her six-year-old brother Theo, wearing blue overalls and a red cap, live in a small house at the edge of town. When Mia finds a rusty key under a flowerpot and Theo holds up an old map with no stations marked, their curiosity sends them down a narrow path behind the garden. It leads to a tiny station called Mystery Stop, where a little brass engine named Pip waits. Pip explains that his railway connects forgotten gardens, places no one remembers, and he stops only for careful children.
Mia and Theo climb into Pip's carriage and set off through tall grass and under a stone bridge. At each secret stop they find a garden in need: weeds to pull and flowers to water, a broken swing to mend, a pond choked with leaves so the fish can breathe. Mia's curiosity pushes them to explore, while Theo's caution reminds them to stay together and watch their steps, and Pip's bell warns of gaps and loose stones. Their small acts of care slowly bring each garden back to life.
The journey takes them to a hidden garden behind a high hedge, where a note thanks them for their help and a shy old gardener named Mr. Green is waiting. The story shows young readers how curiosity and caution can work as a team, and how looking after shared places rewards the people who tend them. It suits children at the early chapter-book stage, whether read aloud or read alone.

A Chapter from the Book

Mia and Theo lived in a small house at the edge of town. Mia was eight, with curly black hair in two puff buns and a yellow raincoat. Theo was six, wearing blue overalls and a red cap backwards. They loved to explore. One day, Mia found a rusty key under a flowerpot. "What does this open?" she wondered. Theo held up an old map with no stations marked. "Maybe we should find out," he said. 1
Early the next morning, they followed a narrow path behind their garden. The path led to a tiny station with a wooden bench and a sign that read "Mystery Stop." A little brass train engine sat waiting, no bigger than a large dog. He had round headlamp eyes and a red scarf tied around his funnel. "Hello!" said Mia. "Are you a train?" The engine rang his little bell. "I'm Pip!" he chirped. "I stop for careful children." 2
Theo looked at his map, but the station wasn't on it. "How can that be?" he asked. Pip puffed a tiny cloud of steam. "My railway connects forgotten gardens," he said. "Places no one remembers." Mia's eyes grew wide with curiosity. "Can we come aboard?" she asked. Theo held her hand. "Only if we stay together and watch our steps," he said. Pip nodded. "That's the rule!" 3
Mia and Theo climbed into Pip's little carriage. It had soft velvet seats and windows shaped like flowers. Pip rang his bell, and they chugged away. The track wound through tall grass and under a stone bridge. "Where are we going?" Mia asked. "To the first forgotten garden," said Pip. "It's been lonely for years." Theo checked his map. "There's no station here," he said. "That's the mystery!" said Mia. 4
They arrived at a garden overgrown with weeds. The flowers drooped, and the fountain was dry. "Oh, poor garden," said Theo. Mia spotted a rusty watering can. "Let's help!" she said. They pulled weeds and watered the flowers with water from a nearby stream. Pip rang his bell softly. "Careful of the loose stones," he warned. Theo watched his step and held Mia's hand. Slowly, the garden began to bloom. 5
Next stop was a garden with a broken swing and tangled vines. Mia wanted to run ahead, but Theo reminded her, "Stay together!" They cleared the vines and fixed the swing with a piece of rope from Mia's backpack. Pip's bell jingled. "A gap in the path ahead!" he called. They stepped carefully over it. "We make a good team," said Mia. Theo smiled his gap-toothed smile. "Curiosity and caution!" 6
They chugged to a third garden, where a little pond was choked with leaves. "The fish can't breathe," said Theo. Mia found a net in her backpack. Together they scooped out the leaves. Pip puffed happily. "You're bringing the gardens back to life!" he said. "But we must be careful," said Theo. "The path is slippery." Mia nodded. "I'll watch my step," she said. 7
At each secret stop, they found something new to fix. A birdbath to fill, a bench to mend, a path to sweep. Pip's bell warned them of gaps and loose stones. Mia's curiosity led them to explore, and Theo's caution kept them safe. "We should always stay together," said Mia. "Yes," said Theo. "And look before we leap." They giggled and chugged on. 8
They came to a garden that was not forgotten, but hidden behind a high hedge. "How do we get in?" asked Mia. Pip showed them a tiny door. "It's small, but you can fit," he said. Theo went first, then Mia. Inside, they found a beautiful garden with a note: "Thank you for helping us." Mia and Theo looked at each other. "Someone knows we're here!" whispered Mia. 9
They followed a winding path deeper into the garden. "Who could have left this note?" Mia wondered. Theo pointed to a little house made of vines. "Maybe someone lives there," he said. They knocked, but no one answered. "We should be careful," said Theo. "Let's leave a thank-you note too." They wrote one and placed it on the doorstep. As they turned to go, they heard a soft rustle. 10
The rustle came from a bush, and out popped a shy old gardener named Mr. Green. "I've been watching you two," he said. "You've brought my forgotten gardens back to life!" Mia and Theo smiled. "We couldn't have done it without Pip," said Mia. Mr. Green gave them each a tiny flowerpot with a sprout. "Plant these at home," he said. "And always remember: curiosity is good, but caution keeps you safe." 11
Mia and Theo promised to be careful. "We'll always stay together," said Mia. "And watch where we step," added Theo. Pip rang his bell. "Time to go home," he said. They climbed aboard and waved goodbye to Mr. Green. The little train chugged back through the secret railway. The gardens behind them were blooming and full of life. 12
On the way home, Pip stopped at each garden to say goodbye. "Come back anytime," he said. "But only if you're careful." Mia and Theo nodded. "We will," they said. As they passed the station with the sign "Mystery Stop," they saw that someone had added a new word: "Solved!" Mia laughed. "We did it!" she said.
