The Little Promise Tree

🎧 Listen to the Story · 8:14

Mia loves her sunny garden more than any place in the world, so when a tiny tree with emerald-bright leaves appears beside the old stone wall, she is full of wonder. From behind it steps Sprout, a small bark-brown creature with leafy hair and an acorn cap, who explains that this is the Little Promise Tree: it grows a new leaf every time someone keeps a promise, and a broken promise makes it sad. Mia agrees to help care for it and soon brings her friends Leo and Rosie into the garden, where Sprout teaches them to make small promises they can truly keep.

Leo eagerly vows to bring fresh water every morning, but his first attempt ends with a spilled bucket and an untied shoelace. Rosie, quieter and more careful, waters the tree each day after school and discovers that keeping her word makes her feel warm inside. When Leo forgets and a leaf turns yellow, the children learn that reliability takes practice and that a promise can be repaired. Word spreads, more children come to make their own promises, and trust grows among them like the tree's roots.

Then a strong wind snaps a branch, and the friends must decide how to help the tree heal. The story follows their shared effort and the lesson at its heart: small promises, kept with care, can grow into something strong. It is suited to young readers and to adults reading aloud with them, offering a gentle way to talk about responsibility, trust and looking after what we share.

Mia skipped into the sunny garden with her green watering can swinging at her side. Her curly puff buns bounced, and her gap-toothed smile stretched wide. She loved this garden more than any place in the world. Today, something new waited for her near the old stone wall. A tiny tree, no taller than her knee, stood with leaves that sparkled like emeralds. "Hello, little tree," Mia whispered, and she felt a warm, happy feeling inside. 1

Out from behind the tree peeked a tiny creature with barkbrown skin and leafy green hair. He wore an acorn cap hat and a woven grass sash. On his chest glowed a leaf-shaped mark. "I am Sprout," he said in a voice like rustling leaves. "This is the Little Promise Tree. It grows a bright new leaf every time someone keeps a promise. Will you help me care for it?" Mia nodded, her big dark brown eyes shining with wonder. 2

Mia ran to tell her friends. Leo came first, his backward blue cap barely staying on his messy ginger hair. He carried a satchel full of seed packets. "A promise tree? That's amazing!" he cheered, freckles crinkling. Rosie followed quietly, her beaded braids clicking and her purple boots splashing in a puddle. She held her beaded bracelet and smiled a dimpled smile. "I want to help too," she said softly. Sprout clapped his twig hands with joy. 3

Sprout explained the rules. "Make small promises you can truly keep. Each kept promise grows a leaf. But a broken promise makes the tree sad." Leo's hand shot up. "I promise to bring fresh water every morning!" he declared. Mia smiled gently. "That's a big promise, Leo. Can you write it down so you remember?" Leo nodded and scribbled on a seed packet. Rosie whispered, "I promise to water the tree every day after school." Sprout's leaf mark glowed a little brighter. 4

The next morning, Leo arrived with a bucket of water, but his shoelace was untied and he tripped. Water splashed everywhere! "Oh no!" he cried. "I broke my promise!" But Mia helped him up and said, "You can try again tomorrow. A promise kept is what matters." Leo nodded, determined. He tied his shoe and refilled the bucket. When he watered the tree, a tiny green leaf unfurled, sparkling in the sun. Sprout danced happily. 5

Rosie was shy, but she kept her promise every day. She came with her little watering can and whispered kind words to the tree. Each time, a new leaf grew. "You are reliable, Rosie," Mia said. Rosie's dimpled smile grew bigger. "I like keeping promises," she said. "It makes me feel warm inside." The tree now had several bright leaves, and its trunk was a little taller. Sprout's glow was steady and warm. 6

Leo sometimes forgot things. One day, he was so busy collecting seeds that he forgot to water the tree. The next morning, he saw a leaf turn yellow and droop. "I'm sorry!" he told Sprout. "I'll write my promise on my hand so I remember." He did, and he kept his promise for a whole week. The yellow leaf turned green again, and three new leaves grew. "Being reliable takes practice," Mia said, "and you're doing great!" 7

Word spread about the Little Promise Tree. Other children came to make promises. "I promise to read a book to my little brother," said one. "I promise to help wash the dishes," said another. Each kept promise made the tree grow. The children took turns caring for it, and trust grew among them like the tree's roots. Mia organized a promise chart, and Leo brought seeds to plant around the tree. Rosie watered it daily, her braids bouncing. 8

One windy day, a strong gust blew through the garden. It snapped a small branch of the promise tree! The children gasped. "Oh no!" cried Rosie. "Will the tree be okay?" Sprout looked worried. "The tree needs care to heal," he said. "But if we all keep our promises, it will grow stronger." Mia stepped forward. "Let's make a promise together: we will take extra care of the tree until it's better." Everyone agreed. 9

The children kept their promise. They watered the tree, protected it from wind, and talked to it kindly. Rosie brought a soft cloth to wrap the broken branch. Leo brought compost from his satchel. Mia brought a small fence made of twigs. Day by day, the tree healed. New leaves sprouted, and the broken branch grew back stronger. Sprout's glow was brighter than ever. "You kept your promise," he said. "That is the best medicine." 10

As the tree grew, so did the children's trust in each other. They learned that keeping small promises made big things happen. Mia said, "When we care for our promises, we care for each other." Leo nodded. "I used to forget, but now I write things down. I'm more reliable." Rosie smiled. "I used to be shy, but keeping promises made me brave." The tree stood tall and green, its leaves shimmering with every kept promise. 11

Sprout called the children together. "You have done well," he said. "The Little Promise Tree is now a Big Promise Tree! Its leaves hold all your trust and care." The children cheered. Mia looked at the tree and felt proud. "We couldn't have done it without each other," she said. Leo high-fived Rosie, and Rosie giggled. Sprout's leaf mark glowed so bright it lit up the garden like a tiny sun.
