A Chapter from the Book

The Little Star Sailor Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Lumi was a small sailor with warm brown skin and two curly puffs of black hair. She wore a silver-blue jacket with brass buttons and a red knitted scarf that fluttered in the starlight. Her boat was silver and shaped like a crescent moon, with sails that caught the solar wind. In her pocket, she kept an oversized star-shaped brass compass. 'Ready for adventure?' she asked the sky. 1

Pip, her navigator, was a glowing gold creature the size of a cat. His paper-like wings fluttered as he pulled rolled star maps from his little leather satchel. 'I have maps, I have maps!' he chirped, tucking a red pencil behind one ear. 'But Lumi, did you check our route?' Lumi nodded and smiled her gap-toothed smile. 'I planned it twice,' she said. 'We're all set to explore.' 2

The boat lifted off with a gentle hum, leaving a trail of sparkles behind. All around them, stars twinkled like friendly lanterns. 'Look!' cried Pip, pointing with his tail. 'The Big Dipper is pouring starlight!' Lumi laughed and waved at the constellation. 'Hello, up there!' she called. The stars seemed to twinkle back, and the little boat sailed on through the velvety dark. 3

Their journey would take them to a distant space station, far across the starry sea. Pip unrolled a map and read it aloud. 'First we pass the Swan, then the Eagle, then the bright North Star.' Lumi listened carefully and checked her compass. 'North Star, here we come!' she said. But Pip's ears twitched. 'What if we get lost?' he worried. 4

Lumi patted Pip's glowing fur. 'That's why we packed maps and planned our route,' she said. 'Getting ready first makes exploring safer and more fun.' Pip felt a little better. They sailed past a comet that swished its icy tail. 'Make a wish!' Lumi cried. They both wished for a safe journey. The comet winked and zoomed away. 5

Soon the stars grew thicker, like a crowd of shiny friends. 'Which way is north?' Pip asked, squinting at his map. Lumi pulled out her compass, but the needle spun wildly. 'Oh no,' she whispered. 'The compass isn't working.' Pip's big amber eyes grew wide. 'Are we lost?' he squeaked. Lumi took a deep breath. 'Let's stay calm and look around.' 6

Just then, a gentle light glowed ahead. A tall, slender figure floated toward them, with deep indigo skin dusted with tiny stars. Long silver-white hair flowed like mist around her midnight-blue robe. Her tall pointed hat was crowned with a single bright star. 'I am the Polaris Keeper,' she said softly. 'I see you are looking for north.' 7

The Polaris Keeper pointed to a bright star. 'That is Polaris, the North Star. It always stays in the same place. Find it, and you will always know which way is north.' Lumi looked up and smiled. 'So I don't need a compass?' she asked. 'You have your eyes and your map,' the Keeper said. 'And you have your careful planning.' 8

The Keeper taught Lumi how to line up the Big Dipper's pointers to find Polaris. 'Two stars at the end of the bowl point to the North Star,' she explained. Lumi practiced, and soon she could find north all by herself. 'Thank you!' she said. The Polaris Keeper glowed warmly. 'You are a true star sailor,' she said. 'Sail safely, little one.' 9

With the North Star as their guide, Lumi and Pip sailed on. Pip read the map aloud, and Lumi steered by the constellations. 'The Swan is behind us, so we're on the right path!' she cheered. They passed glowing nebulas and dancing star clusters. 'This is fun!' Pip said, his worry forgotten. 'And safe, because we planned,' Lumi added. 10

At last, a space station appeared, glittering like a silver wheel. Captain Orbit, tall and broad-shouldered in an orange uniform, waved from the docking bay. 'Welcome, star sailors!' she called. Her grey wavy hair and friendly green eyes made Lumi feel at home. 'I heard you navigated without a compass,' the captain said. 'That's impressive!' 11

Lumi told Captain Orbit about the Polaris Keeper and the North Star. 'We packed maps and planned our route,' she said. 'So we felt safe even when the compass spun.' Captain Orbit smiled and gave Lumi a badge shaped like a star. 'Preparation makes exploration safer,' she said. 'You're a fine example, Lumi.' Pip puffed out his chest proudly. 12

The space station was full of wonders. Captain Orbit showed them the observation deck, where stars bloomed like flowers. 'You can explore here as long as you like,' she said. Lumi and Pip thanked her. 'We'll keep using our maps,' Lumi promised. 'And we'll always check our route,' Pip added, tapping his satchel of star maps. 13

That night, Lumi and Pip sat in the station's garden dome, watching the stars. 'We did it,' Lumi said. 'We sailed through space and found our way.' Pip curled his lantern-tipped tail around her. 'Because you planned ahead,' he said. 'And because we had friendly guides,' Lumi added, thinking of the Polaris Keeper. They smiled at the twinkling sky. 14

When it was time to sail home, Lumi checked her maps one last time. 'All set?' asked Captain Orbit. 'All set!' said Lumi. 'Remember,' the captain said, 'the stars will always guide you if you know how to look.' Lumi hugged her new friend goodbye. 'I'll come back and explore more,' she promised. The silver boat hummed to life.
