Anna loves to garden. She keeps a pocket full of seed packets and wears yellow rain boots that are perfect for puddle stomping. One morning, while sweeping her front steps, she finds a folded paper tucked under the doormat. It is a map showing little drawings of gardens all over the city, each marked with a tiny star. Curious and excited, Anna decides to find every single hidden garden on the map.
Her search leads her to three very different places. On a rooftop she meets Mr. Okafor, who grows tomatoes in buckets and teaches her how to water carefully because water is precious in a city. In a bakery courtyard she meets Priya, who plants mint and basil in old teacups and shows her how containers can have a new life. Under an old wooden staircase she meets Grandma Lu, who cares for ferns and moss and explains that some plants thrive in cool, dark places with a different kind of light. Anna writes each trick in her notebook and visits the gardens again and again.
Then Anna notices an empty lot full of weeds and broken bottles near her own street. Remembering everything she has learned, she makes a plan and knocks on her neighbors' doors. The story follows her as she brings the whole community together to turn the neglected lot into a shared garden. Through Anna's curiosity and quiet determination, young readers learn about container gardening, saving water, reusing old materials, and caring for shade-loving plants, and they see how small acts of neighborliness can create something beautiful for everyone. The book is suited to children who enjoy gentle stories about nature, friendship, and making a difference close to home.

Anna loved to garden. She had a pocket full of seed packets and yellow rain boots that were perfect for puddle stomping. One morning, while sweeping her front steps, she found a folded paper tucked under the doormat. It was a map! The map showed little drawings of gardens all over the city, each marked with a tiny star. 'Hidden gardens!' Anna whispered. Her dark brown eyes sparkled with curiosity. 1
Anna studied the map closely. There was a garden on a rooftop, one in a courtyard, and one tucked under an old staircase. She packed her canvas satchel with the map and a small trowel. 'I'm going to find every single one,' she said. She pulled on her red bandana and set off down the street, her curly hair buns bouncing with each step. 2
The first star on the map led to a tall building. Anna climbed the stairs to the roof. There, among buckets of tomatoes, stood Mr. Okafor. He wore a faded blue work shirt and brown suspenders, and his straw hat shaded his kind, crinkled eyes. 'Welcome!' he said. 'You found my rooftop garden. Would you like to see how I grow tomatoes in buckets?' 3
Mr. Okafor showed Anna how to water the tomatoes just enough, not too much. 'In a city, water is precious,' he said. 'We save every drop.' Anna helped him fill a watering can and learned how to pinch off little suckers from the tomato plants. 'Container gardening is perfect for small spaces,' Mr. Okafor said. Anna wrote the trick in her notebook. 4
The next star on the map led to a cozy courtyard behind a bakery. There, Priya was busy planting herbs in old teacups. Her long black braid swung as she worked, and her orange sneakers tapped to a happy tune. 'Hi!' said Priya. 'I'm recycling these teacups into plant pots. Want to help me plant mint?' Anna nodded eagerly and rolled up her sleeves. 5
Priya showed Anna how to put small stones at the bottom of each cup for drainage. 'Old containers can have new life,' Priya said. They planted mint, basil, and chives in the teacups. Anna's freckled nose sniffed the fresh herbs. 'This is like a treasure hunt,' she said. Priya grinned. 'Gardens can hide in plain sight.' 6
The last star on the map was near Anna's own street. It pointed under an old wooden staircase. Anna ducked underneath and found a cool, shady nook. There sat Grandma Lu, tiny and round, in her lavender cardigan and floral apron. Ferns and moss grew all around her. 'Welcome, little gardener,' Grandma Lu said with a warm smile. 7
Grandma Lu showed Anna how to care for plants that love the shade. 'Ferns don't need much sun,' she said. 'They thrive in cool, dark places.' Anna touched the soft moss. 'I never knew plants could grow without sunshine,' she said. 'They grow with a different kind of light,' Grandma Lu said. 'You just have to look closely.' 8
Anna visited the hidden gardens again and again. She learned to save water, reuse containers, and grow shade-loving plants. But then she noticed something sad. On her way home, she passed an empty lot full of weeds and broken bottles. 'This would make a perfect garden,' she thought. 'But it's a mess.' 9
Anna sat on the curb and looked at her map. All the hidden gardens were small but beautiful. Why couldn't there be a garden for everyone? She thought about Mr. Okafor's tomatoes, Priya's teacup herbs, and Grandma Lu's ferns. 'I have an idea!' she said. She ran home to make a plan. 10
The next day, Anna knocked on doors. She showed her neighbors the map and told them about the empty lot. 'Let's turn it into a community garden!' she said. Mr. Okafor promised tomato plants. Priya brought herb seedlings. Grandma Lu shared fern cuttings. Even Anna's teacher offered to help. Everyone wanted to join in. 11
On Saturday, the whole neighborhood gathered at the empty lot. They pulled weeds, picked up trash, and dug the soil. Anna's yellow boots were muddy, but she didn't mind. She handed out seed packets from her pocket. 'We can all garden together,' she said. People laughed and worked side by side. 12
By afternoon, the lot was transformed. Rows of vegetables and flowers filled the space. A new bench sat under a small tree. 'This garden is for everyone,' Anna announced. 'No matter how small your space, you can grow something beautiful.' Her gaptoothed smile shone bright as the sun. 13
The community garden grew and grew. Neighbors took turns watering and weeding. Mr. Okafor built a compost bin. Priya painted old pots. Grandma Lu planted ferns in the shady corner. Anna drew a new map, this time with a big star in the middle. 'This is the best hidden garden of all,' she said. 14
One evening, Anna sat in the garden with her friends. 'How did you find all those hidden gardens?' Priya asked. Anna held up her map. 'I just looked closely,' she said. 'The city is full of surprises if you pay attention.' Mr. Okafor nodded. 'And now we have a garden that everyone can enjoy.' 15
Anna smiled. She was glad she had followed the map. She had learned so much from her new friends. But best of all, she had helped make her city a little greener and a lot friendlier. 'Gardens are everywhere,' she said. 'You just have to open your eyes and your heart.' And she did.
