Ben loves his red marble more than anything, so when it disappears into a patch of thick green moss in the garden, he searches everywhere. Then he hears a tiny squeaky sound and discovers a hidden village of moss people, no bigger than his thumb. Their leader, King Mossley, explains that a new building project threatens to crush their home, and the villagers cannot agree on what to do. Pippa, a young moss girl, wants to move immediately to a safe corner near the rose bush, while Old Fern, the village elder, insists they must stay because their roots and ancestors are buried beneath the moss. Ben listens carefully to both sides and proposes a solution: move the entire village together, preserving both their homes and their safety. King Mossley agrees, and everyone works as a team—Ben lifting the moss, Pippa leading the way, Fern showing how to protect the roots, and the king directing. As the sun sets, the last house is placed in the new corner, and the villagers celebrate their success. Pippa and Fern apologize to each other, and Ben is made an honorary moss person. The story teaches children the value of listening, teamwork, and finding creative solutions to conflicts. It is suitable for young readers who enjoy fairy tales with gentle lessons about cooperation and respect for nature.

Ben loved his red marble more than anything. One sunny morning, he took it to the garden to play. He rolled it across the grass, but it bounced off a stone and vanished into a thick patch of soft green moss. Ben searched and searched, but the marble was gone. Then he heard a tiny sound—like a squeaky door opening. 1
Ben knelt down and parted the moss gently. There, hidden beneath the green, was a tiny village! Little houses made of twigs and leaves lined a winding path. Tiny people, no bigger than his thumb, hurried about. Ben gasped. He had never seen anything so small and so wonderful. A tiny guard with a leaf spear pointed at him and squeaked, "Halt! Who goes there?" 2
Ben spoke softly so he wouldn't scare them. "I'm Ben. I lost my marble. I didn't mean to disturb you." The guard lowered his spear. Just then, a tiny figure stepped forward. He wore a cloak of woven grass and a golden acorn-cap crown. His mossgreen hair was tufted like a crown, and his amber eyes looked worried. "I am King Mossley," he said. "You have found our secret." 3
King Mossley led Ben to the village square. "A new building project is coming," the king explained. "The big people are digging up the garden. Our village will be crushed." His twig sceptre trembled. "We must decide what to do, but my people cannot agree." Ben looked around at the tiny worried faces and felt a pang in his heart. He wanted to help. 4
A young moss girl named Pippa jumped up. Her springy moss hair was tied in two small buns, and a daisy sat behind her ear. "We should move right away!" she cried. "I found a safe corner near the rose bush. Let's go before it's too late!" She stamped her tiny foot, and her petal skirt fluttered. "Waiting is too dangerous!" 5
But Old Fern, the village elder, shook his head. He leaned on his twisted root walking stick and adjusted his tiny round spectacles. His long silver-green braid swayed. "No, no," he said. "Our roots are here. Our grandparents are buried beneath this moss. We cannot just leave. We must find a way to stay." The villagers began to argue, some with Pippa, some with Fern. 6
Ben listened carefully to everyone. He did not interrupt. He heard Pippa's fear and Fern's love for the old home. Then he had an idea. "What if we move the whole village together?" he said. "We can dig up the moss and take it to the safe corner. That way, you keep your roots and your homes, and you stay safe." The villagers looked at each other. Could it work? 7
King Mossley nodded slowly. "It is a clever plan," he said. "But it will take all of us working together. Pippa, you know the safe corner. Fern, you know how to move the roots without breaking them. Ben, you are big and strong. Will you help us?" Ben smiled. "Of course!" he said. "Teamwork can do anything." The villagers cheered. 8
They set to work. Ben gently lifted the moss with his fingers, while the moss people carried twigs and leaves. Pippa led the way to the rose bush, and Old Fern showed them how to keep the roots wrapped in damp soil. King Mossley used his twig sceptre to direct everyone. It was hard work, but nobody gave up. They sang tiny songs to keep their spirits up. 9
As the sun began to set, the last house was placed in the new corner. The moss village sat snug and safe beneath the rose bush. The villagers looked around and smiled. They had done it! King Mossley stood on a small stone and raised his sceptre. "Today, we learned that listening and working together can save a kingdom," he said. Everyone clapped. 10
Pippa ran to Ben and hugged his finger. "I'm sorry I was so impatient," she said. "Your plan was better than mine." Old Fern patted her shoulder. "And I'm sorry I was so stubborn," he said. "You were right to want safety, little one." Ben felt warm inside. He had helped his new friends, and they had helped each other. 11
King Mossley called for a celebration. The moss people brought out tiny acorn cups filled with dew and shared them with Ben. They danced and sang until the stars came out. Ben promised to visit often and to keep their secret safe. "You are always welcome here," said the king. "You are an honorary moss person now." Ben laughed with joy. 12
Before Ben left, King Mossley handed him something small and round. It was his lost marble! "It rolled into our village," said the king. "We kept it safe for you." Ben thanked him and placed the marble in his canvas satchel. He looked back at the tiny village under the rose bush. It glowed with warm light, and Ben knew he would never forget this day. 13
On his way home, Ben thought about what he had learned. Good leadership means listening to everyone, even when they disagree. Pippa wanted to move quickly, and Old Fern wanted to stay. Both were right in their own way. By working together, they found a solution that made everyone happy. Ben smiled. He would remember this lesson forever.
