Maya loves puzzles more than anything, and she never goes anywhere without her small notebook and pencil. So when she arrives at school one Monday morning and finds a trail of small, smudged blue footprints marching down the hallway, she immediately declares it a school mystery. Her best friend Leo, with his sandy blond hair and blue backpack, joins the investigation, and together the two young detectives begin sketching, measuring and following the clues wherever they lead.
The footprints always seem to head toward the art room, and the paint is still wet when the children examine it. The school caretaker, Mr. Oakley, admits that strange things have been happening after closing time, so Maya and Leo hide behind the coat racks and wait. What they discover is not a person at all, but a whirring cleaning machine that has been spreading blue paint instead of soapy water across the floors. The real mystery turns out to be a simple mistake, and solving it takes observation, patience and teamwork.
This gentle story shows young readers how detectives actually work: by writing things down, comparing details, asking careful questions and testing their ideas. It also reminds children that mistakes happen to everyone, even grown-ups, and that the best response is to help fix them rather than look for someone to blame. The book is suited to early primary school readers who enjoy light mystery stories, and to parents or teachers looking for a tale about curiosity, cooperation and taking responsibility.

The Mystery of Blue Footprints Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN
Maya loved puzzles more than anything. She kept a small notebook and pencil in her pocket, ready for clues. One Monday morning, she noticed something strange outside her classroom. Blue footprints marched down the hallway! They were small and smudged, like someone had stepped in paint. Maya's dark brown eyes grew wide. "A school mystery!" she whispered. 1
Maya pulled out her notebook and sketched the footprints. She measured each one with her pencil. "These are too small for a grown-up," she said. Just then, her best friend Leo came running. His sandy blond hair flopped over his forehead. "Blue footprints?" he gasped. "Let's follow them!" But the footprints stopped at the corner and vanished. "We need evidence," Maya said. "Let's ask Mr. Oakley." 2
Mr. Oakley was the school caretaker. He wore blue overalls and a red cap. He scratched his grey moustache. "Blue footprints? I haven't seen any," he said. "But strange things have been happening after closing time." Maya and Leo exchanged a look. "We'll investigate!" Leo declared. His green eyes sparkled. Mr. Oakley smiled. "Be careful, detectives. And don't touch anything wet." 3
That afternoon, Maya and Leo hid behind the coat racks. They waited until the school grew quiet. Then they heard a soft whirring sound. "Did you hear that?" Leo whispered. He pulled a flashlight from his blue backpack. Maya nodded. Her red sneakers squeaked as she tiptoed forward. The hallway was dim and empty. Then they saw them: fresh blue footprints! They led toward the art room. 4
The footprints were spaced evenly, as if someone had walked slowly. "They always lead to the art room," Maya said, sketching quickly. "That's our first real clue." Leo shone his flashlight on the floor. "Look! The paint is still wet." He touched it with his finger and sniffed. "Smells like the blue paint from art class." Maya wrote that down. "Good observation, Leo." 5
The next morning, they asked their art teacher about the blue paint. "We used it yesterday," she said. "But I cleaned up. The paint should be in the cupboard." Maya and Leo checked the art room. The paint was there, but one big jar was tipped over. Blue paint dripped onto the floor. "Someone forgot to close it," Leo said. "But who?" Maya frowned. "The footprints didn't stop here. They went past the door." 6
That night, Maya and Leo hid again. This time, they brought a magnifying glass. Leo's bandage on his knee showed from under his shorts. "We'll catch the culprit," he said. They waited in the dark. The whirring sound came closer. Then a strange machine rolled into view. It had brushes and a tank. It left a trail of blue footprints! "What is that?" Leo whispered. 7
The machine was about the size of a shopping cart. It had a round body and a long hose. It sprayed water as it cleaned the floor. But its tank was filled with blue paint instead of soapy water. "It's a cleaning machine," Maya said. "But why is it spreading paint?" The machine turned a corner and disappeared into the art room. "We have to tell Mr. Oakley," Leo said. 8
The next morning, they found Mr. Oakley in the hallway. He looked tired. "The blue footprints are back," he said. "I can't figure out where they come from." Maya showed him her notebook. "We followed them, Mr. Oakley. They lead to the art room. And we saw a machine." Leo nodded. "It's spreading blue paint everywhere!" Mr. Oakley's eyes widened. "My old cleaning machine? I must have filled it with the wrong bucket!" 9
Mr. Oakley led them to a small closet near the art room. Inside was the cleaning machine. Its tank was half full of blue paint. "I was in a hurry," Mr. Oakley said. "I grabbed the wrong container. The machine has been cleaning the floors with paint instead of soap." Maya looked at the machine. "Can we fix it?" she asked. Mr. Oakley smiled. "Together, we can." 10
First, they drained the blue paint from the tank. Mr. Oakley showed them how to rinse it with water. Leo held the hose while Maya scrubbed the brushes. "Teamwork!" Leo cheered. Mr. Oakley laughed. "You two are excellent helpers." They filled the tank with the right soap. Then Mr. Oakley turned on the machine. It hummed happily and sprayed clean water. No more blue footprints! 11
Now they had to clean the school. The blue footprints were everywhere. Maya and Leo grabbed mops and buckets. Mr. Oakley brought a big floor polisher. "We'll make the hallways shine," he said. They worked all afternoon. Leo slipped on a wet spot but jumped up laughing. Maya scrubbed every footprint she could find. Slowly, the blue marks disappeared. 12
By evening, the school looked brand new. Mr. Oakley wiped his forehead. "Thank you, detectives. You solved the mystery and saved the day." Maya smiled. "We couldn't have done it without your help." Leo nodded. "And without evidence!" Mr. Oakley gave them each a shiny star sticker. "You've earned these. Patience and teamwork are the best tools." 13
The next morning, the principal announced the news. "Thanks to Maya and Leo, our school is clean and bright. They solved the mystery of the blue footprints!" The whole school clapped. Maya's cheeks turned pink. Leo took a bow. Mr. Oakley winked from the back of the room. The blue footprints were gone for good.
