The Piano Beneath the Lake

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:34

Oliver spends his summer days swimming in the clear lake near his village, until one sunny morning he hears a soft, tinkling piano melody drifting up from deep underwater. Curious and brave, he dives down with his red goggles and discovers a grand piano resting on the lake bottom inside a shimmering dome, its keys moving by themselves to play a lonely tune. There he meets Pip, a small mint-green water creature with amber eyes and fins at her ears, who leads him to her family and the heart of the lake's mystery.

Pip introduces Oliver to Marina, a graceful water spirit in a kelp dress, and to Grandfather Tide, the old keeper of the piano who carries a driftwood staff topped with a glowing pearl. They explain that the piano once filled the whole lake with music, but its keys are now jammed with slime and tiny shells, and the mechanism has fallen silent. Although Oliver has never repaired a piano before, he is good at puzzles, so he asks for a soft brush, clears the keys and squeezes inside the instrument to free a piece of driftwood caught between the hammers.

This gentle children's tale is about curiosity, careful problem-solving and the joy of sharing music. Young readers follow Oliver as he listens, asks questions and tries step by step until a clear note rings out again, learning that patience and a willing pair of hands can bring something beautiful back to life. The story suits children who enjoy underwater worlds, friendly magical creatures and quiet adventures where kindness and music bring a village and a lake together.

A Chapter from the Book

The Piano Beneath the Lake Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Oliver loved the lake near his village. Every summer day, he swam in the cool, clear water. One sunny morning, as he floated near the shore, he heard a soft, tinkling melody. It was piano music, coming from deep underwater! Oliver pushed his red goggles up on his forehead and listened closely. The music was gentle and a little sad, like a secret waiting to be found. 1

Oliver took a deep breath and dove down. The water was so clear he could see tiny fish and waving weeds. The music grew louder, and there, on the lake bottom, sat a grand piano inside a shimmering clear dome. Its keys moved by themselves, playing a lonely tune. Oliver stared in wonder. He had never seen anything like it. He swam closer, his heart beating fast. 2

Suddenly, a small, round creature popped out from behind a rock. She had mint-green translucent skin, tufty white hair, and big round amber eyes. Tiny fins fluttered at her ears, and freckles of light sparkled on her cheeks. She wore a pale pink vest with shell buttons. "Hello!" she giggled. "I'm Pip. You can hear the piano, too?" Oliver nodded, amazed. "I'm Oliver. What is this place?" 3

Pip swam closer, her amber eyes shining. "This is our home. The piano is very old. It used to fill the whole lake with music! But now its keys are stuck, and the music sounds sad." She took Oliver's hand. "Come meet my family. Maybe you can help!" Oliver felt a thrill of curiosity. He followed Pip through the clear water, past schools of silver fish and swaying plants. 4

They came to a beautiful underwater garden. A tall, graceful water spirit glided toward them. Her skin was pale blue-green and translucent, with shimmering scales, and her long silver hair flowed like water. She wore a dress woven from soft green kelp and a pearl necklace. "Welcome, Oliver," she said gently. "I am Marina. Pip told me you heard our piano. It has been silent for too long." 5

Marina led Oliver to the dome. Inside, the piano stood grand and ancient, its wood carved with swirling patterns. An old water spirit with deep-blue translucent skin and a long white beard sat on a stool. He held a driftwood staff topped with a glowing pearl. "This is Grandfather Tide," said Marina. "He is the keeper of the piano." Grandfather Tide nodded kindly. "The keys are stuck, and our music is broken." 6

Grandfather Tide showed Oliver the piano's keys. They were covered in a thin layer of lake slime and tiny shells. "The mechanism is jammed," he said. "Long ago, the piano played by itself, and its music made the whole lake happy. But now it needs a careful touch." Oliver looked at the keys. He had never fixed a piano before, but he was good at puzzles. "I can try," he said bravely. 7

Oliver asked for a soft brush. Pip brought one made of fish fins. Oliver gently brushed away the slime and shells from the keys. Marina held a glowing pearl close so he could see. Grandfather Tide watched with hopeful eyes. Oliver pressed a key. It moved a little! "It's working!" he cheered. But some keys were still stuck. He needed to fix the inside, too. 8

Pip showed Oliver a small opening at the back of the piano. "Can you reach the strings?" she asked. Oliver squeezed his small, wiry body through. Inside, he saw tangled strings and a tiny piece of driftwood stuck between the hammers. He carefully pulled it out. Then he checked every string. "I think that was the problem," he said, smiling. He wiggled back out, his freckled nose smudged with dust. 9

Oliver sat at the piano and pressed a key. A clear, beautiful note rang out! He played a simple tune, and the keys danced under his fingers. Marina clapped her hands. Pip giggled and spun around. Grandfather Tide's cloudy grey eyes shone. "You fixed it!" he said. "The music is free again!" The notes floated up through the dome and spread through the lake, making the water sparkle. 10

Grandfather Tide said, "We must celebrate! Let's have a lake concert tonight. We'll invite the villagers and all the water spirits." Oliver's eyes widened. "I can bring my friends from the village!" he said. Marina smiled. "Yes! Music should be shared." Pip swam in circles with joy. "I'll tell the fish and the turtles!" she cried. Everyone began to prepare for the magical concert. 11

That evening, the lake glowed with soft light. Oliver stood on the shore and called to the villagers. "Come to the lake! There's a concert!" People came with lanterns and blankets. Underwater, the water spirits gathered around the piano. Grandfather Tide played a gentle melody that drifted up through the water. The villagers gasped in wonder. Then Oliver dove in and played a song he knew. The spirits joined with flutes made of shells. 12

Then something magical happened. The villagers on the shore began to sing along with the music. The water spirits sang back, their voices like rippling waves. Marina raised her hands, and the water glowed with rainbow colors. Pip danced with the village children who had waded in. Grandfather Tide's deep voice boomed a happy tune. For one night, the two worlds shared the same song.
