A Chapter from the Book
The Secret Star Clock Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN
In the hilltop town of Starfall, where rooftops sparkled with morning dew, lived an eleven-year-old apprentice named Mira. She had warm brown skin, two curly black braids, and a tiny star-shaped birthmark on her left cheek. Every day she helped Master Orin in his cluttered clock shop, winding springs and polishing brass gears. Her mustard-yellow tunic was always dusted with tiny metal shavings, and her tool belt jingled as she worked. 1
Master Orin was a tall, stooped clockmaker with a white beard and round brass spectacles. His navy robe was embroidered with gold stars that twinkled when he moved. One evening, he showed Mira a strange clock on a high shelf. Its face was dark blue, its hands were silver, and tiny golden stars were painted around the edge. "This is the star clock," he said softly. "It follows the night sky." 2
Mira had never seen a clock like it. The star clock had no numbers, only constellations and a small brass dial. Master Orin explained that long ago, travelers used the stars to tell time. "The sky is a giant map and a giant clock," he said. "But this clock has been silent for years. Its hidden mechanism is broken." Mira's amber eyes grew wide with wonder. She longed to hear it tick. 3
That night, Mira couldn't sleep. She crept downstairs with her tiny grey mouse, Pip, who wore a red collar with a small brass bell. Pip's huge green eyes gleamed in the candlelight. Mira climbed a stool and carefully lifted the star clock from its shelf. It felt cool and heavy in her hands. "Don't worry," she whispered to Pip. "We'll figure out how it works." 4
Mira placed the clock on her workbench and opened the little door on its back. Inside, gears and springs lay tangled and still. A tiny gear was missing—the one that connected the star dial to the ticking heart. Pip squeaked and pointed his pink nose toward a dark corner. "You're right, Pip," Mira said. "We need to find that gear." She searched the floor with a candle. 5
Just then, Master Orin appeared in the doorway, holding his wooden walking stick. He smiled his wrinkled, kind smile. "I see you've found our star clock," he said. "It stopped ticking when I was a young man. I never could fix it." Mira looked up, her braids swinging. "May I try, Master Orin?" she asked. He nodded. "Patience and curiosity are the best tools, Mira. I trust you." 6
The next morning, Mira and Pip searched the shop from top to bottom. They looked under rugs, inside jars, and behind rows of ticking clocks. Pip was brave and quick, squeezing into tiny spaces. At last, in a dusty corner behind a pile of star charts, Pip found a small brass gear. He brought it to Mira, his little bell jingling. "Good boy, Pip!" she cheered. 7
Mira carefully fitted the gear into place. But the clock still didn't tick. She studied the mechanism, her brow furrowed. Then she noticed a tiny lever that was stuck. She gently wiggled it with her smallest screwdriver. "Almost there," she murmured. Pip sat on her shoulder, watching with his huge green eyes. The shop was quiet except for the soft sound of their breathing. 8
Master Orin came to check on her. He unrolled a star chart from his brown satchel and spread it on the workbench. "Ancient navigators used the stars to find their way," he said. "They watched the Big Dipper and the North Star. The sky turns like a giant clock. This clock copies that movement." Mira traced the constellations with her finger, imagining sailors on dark seas. 9
Mira realized the lever controlled the star dial. If she could connect it to the gear, the clock might work. She worked slowly and carefully, her tool belt jingling softly. Pip handed her tiny screws, one by one. Outside, the sun set and the first stars appeared. Mira lit a candle and kept working. She was patient, just like Master Orin had taught her. 10
Finally, with a soft click, the lever moved. The gear began to turn. The star clock ticked! Its silver hands swept across the dark blue face, and the golden stars seemed to twinkle. Mira gasped. "You did it!" cried Master Orin, his blue eyes shining behind his spectacles. Pip squeaked with joy and did a little dance on the workbench. 11
Master Orin explained how the clock worked. "Each star moves across the sky a little each hour," he said. "The clock follows the Big Dipper and the North Star. Long ago, people used the night sky to tell time and find their way home." Mira looked out the window. The stars were like a giant map, sparkling and steady. She felt like she could read the sky itself. 12
That night, Mira and Master Orin sat on the roof with Pip. The star clock ticked softly beside them. Master Orin pointed out constellations and told stories of ancient navigators. "Astronomy helps us understand time," he said. "And it guides us through the dark." Mira smiled, her star birthmark glowing in the moonlight. She felt proud and happy. 13
Word spread through Starfall about the apprentice who fixed the star clock. People came to see it tick. Mira showed them how the clock followed the stars. She explained how the night sky was like a giant clock and map. "Anyone can learn to read it," she said cheerfully. Pip sat on her shoulder, ringing his little bell as if to agree.
