On a quiet beach at sunset, a young girl named Lily, wearing her yellow raincoat and blue rubber boots, follows a mysterious sparkle and a tiny splash to a hidden tidepool behind the rocks. There she discovers a miniature kingdom built from pebbles, shells, and seaweed, and meets its small inhabitants: Pip, a seafoam-green creature in a seaweed vest; Nubbin, a smaller companion with a red knitted cap; and Gran Mara, a coral-pink crab wearing a sea-glass necklace. They are racing to strengthen their bridges and towers before the incoming tide arrives.
Lily asks to help and is welcomed into the work. Pip shows her how the structures must be made strong for the ocean, and she uses her fingers to steady wobbly piles and places flat stones where they are needed. Nubbin gathers pebbles for her, and when he trips while carrying a large shell, Lily catches it just in time. As the sun sinks lower and the waves roll closer, the creatures divide the tasks among themselves, each one contributing a special skill, and Lily learns that everyone has a job to do and that working together is what keeps their kingdom alive.
The story follows the anxious moment when the first wave splashes into the pool and shows how careful preparation and cooperation help the tiny community endure the returning sea. Through Gran Mara's calm guidance and Pip's proud explanation that everyone helps, Lily comes to understand that even the smallest home is full of life. The book is suited to young readers and to adults reading aloud with them, offering a gentle story about curiosity, kindness, teamwork, and respect for the small worlds hidden at the edge of the sea.

On a quiet beach at sunset, Lily walked along the wet sand. Her yellow raincoat flapped in the breeze, and her blue rubber boots left little footprints. She loved how the sky turned pink and orange. Then she heard a tiny splash. Something sparkled near the rocks. Lily followed the sound, her heart beating fast with curiosity. 1
Behind a big rock, Lily found a secret tidepool. The water was clear and still, like a mirror for the sunset. Tiny shapes moved inside. She knelt down and looked closely. There were little bridges and towers made of pebbles and shells. It looked like a miniature kingdom! Lily's hazel-green eyes opened wide with wonder. 2
Pip, a tiny creature with seafoam-green skin and a seaweed vest, waved from a bridge. "Hello! I'm Pip," he said. "We're building our kingdom before the tide comes." Nubbin, smaller with a red knitted cap, dropped a pebble. "Oops!" he squeaked. Lily smiled. "Can I help?" she asked. Pip's amber eyes sparkled. "Yes, please!" 3
Pip showed Lily the tiny bridges and towers. Each one was built from pebbles, shells, and bits of seaweed. "We must make them strong for the ocean," Pip explained. Nubbin stacked pebbles, but they tumbled down. "Try again, Nubbin," Lily said gently. She used one finger to steady the pile. Nubbin grinned, showing a gap-toothed smile. 4
Gran Mara, a coral-pink crab with a sea-glass necklace, clicked her claws. "The tide is coming!" she warned. "We must prepare." Her stalked eyes looked toward the horizon. The sea creatures scurried to finish their work. Lily watched them help each other. Some carried shells, others stacked pebbles. Everyone had a job. The tiny kingdom buzzed with activity. 5
Lily rolled up her sleeves. "What can I do?" she asked. Pip pointed to a wobbly tower. "We need strong stones for the base." Lily carefully picked up small, flat stones and placed them where Pip showed. Nubbin brought her more pebbles in his woven pouch. "Here you go!" he said. Lily thanked him. They worked together as the sun sank lower. 6
The tidepool was a flurry of tiny workers. Pip directed the bridge building, his fin-like ears twitching. Nubbin tried to carry a big shell but tripped. "Oh no!" he cried. Lily caught the shell just in time. "Good catch!" said Pip. Nubbin blushed. "I'll be more careful." They all laughed and kept working. The kingdom grew stronger. 7
Gran Mara watched the water. "The tide is getting closer," she said. "We must hurry." Lily felt a little worried. The waves were rolling in. She helped the creatures stack pebbles higher and pack sand around the towers. "We can do this," she said softly. The sea creatures nodded and worked faster. The sunset painted the sky in gold and purple. 8
As they worked, Lily noticed how each creature had a special job. Some were fast runners, some were strong lifters, and some were clever planners. "Everyone helps," Pip said proudly. "That's how our kingdom survives." Lily smiled. She felt glad to be part of their team. The tiny bridges and towers looked stronger now, ready for the water. 9
The first wave splashed into the tidepool. Lily held her breath. But the bridges stood firm, and the towers held their shape. "Hooray!" cheered Nubbin. The creatures danced with joy. Gran Mara clacked her claws happily. "Well done, everyone!" she said. Lily beamed. She had helped save their miniature kingdom. The water swirled gently around their homes. 10
Lily sat back and watched the tide fill the pool. The sea creatures gathered on a high rock. "Thank you, Lily," Pip said. "You are a true friend." Nubbin gave her a tiny shell. "For you," he said. Lily put it in her satchel. "I'll keep it forever," she promised. The sunset faded, and the first stars appeared. 11
Gran Mara told Lily about the tidepool. "Every day the tide comes and goes," she said. "We rebuild our kingdom each time. It's hard work, but we do it together." Lily listened carefully. She thought about how small the creatures were, yet how big their teamwork was. "Even the smallest home is full of life," she said. Gran Mara nodded wisely. 12
Lily knew it was time to go. "Will you come back?" asked Nubbin. "I will," Lily said. "And I'll bring more stones for your bridges." Pip waved. "We'll be here!" he called. Lily waved goodbye and walked home under the stars. Her heart felt warm and full. The secret tidepool was a place she would never forget. 13
That night, Lily dreamed of tiny bridges and towers. She saw Pip and Nubbin working together, and Gran Mara watching over them. She dreamed of the ocean's gentle waves and the miniature kingdom. When she woke up, she smiled. She knew that even the smallest creatures had big hearts. And she had helped them. 14
The next day, Lily returned to the tidepool. She brought a pocketful of smooth stones. Pip and Nubbin ran to greet her. "Welcome back!" they cheered. Lily knelt down and gave them the stones. "Let's build something new," she said. Together they started a new tower, taller than before. The tidepool was full of life again. 15
As the sun began to set, Lily sat by the tidepool. She watched the tiny creatures work. They were small, but their world was full of wonder. She learned that helping others, even tiny ones, makes a big difference. The secret tidepool would always be a special place. And Lily would always be their friend.
