A Chapter from the Book

The Apprentice's First Spell Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

In a cozy tower at the edge of the kingdom, a young apprentice named Lily practiced her magic. She wore a deep purple robe with gold star trim, and its sleeves were a little too long. Her curly dark brown hair bounced in two buns as she waved her small wooden wand. The wand's tip glowed blue, and Lily's hazel eyes sparkled with big ideas. 1

Lily's teacher, Master Elowen, was tall and kind, with a long silver braid and a teal robe embroidered with silver moons. She carried a gnarled staff topped with a crystal. Lily wanted to impress her more than anything. 'Today,' Lily announced, 'I will make a magnificent fountain!' Master Elowen smiled gently. 'Start with what you know,' she said. 2

Lily's companion, a fluffy lavender owl named Pip, perched on a stack of books. His golden eyes were huge, and his little red collar jingled as he tilted his head. Lily took a deep breath and pointed her wand. 'Fountain, appear!' she cried. But instead of water, a puff of colorful feathers burst into the air. 3

Feathers flew everywhere! Pink, blue, and yellow feathers swirled around the room like a snowstorm. Pip chirped with delight and chased them, his bell jingling. Lily's freckled cheeks turned red. 'That's not right,' she mumbled. She tried a bigger spell, waving her wand in a fancy loop. More feathers! They stuck to the ceiling and covered the floor. 4

Lily tried harder. She spun around and shouted, 'Fountain of splendor!' A giant feather popped out of her wand and bopped her on the nose. Pip caught it in his beak and danced. Lily stomped her red boot. 'Why won't it work?' she cried. Master Elowen watched quietly from her chair, her grey eyes soft behind her spectacles. 5

Lily's next spell was even more complicated. She drew a star in the air and chanted three magic words. A shower of feathers rained down, tickling Pip's ears. He sneezed, and a feather flew into Lily's hair. 'Oh no!' Lily groaned. 'I'll never get it right!' She slumped to the floor, her wand drooping in her hand. 6

Master Elowen set down her staff and knelt beside Lily. 'Magic is like a garden,' she said gently. 'You must plant small seeds first.' Lily looked up, her hazel eyes wet. 'But I wanted to impress you,' she whispered. Master Elowen smiled. 'You impress me when you try. But rushing leads to feathers, not fountains.' 7

Lily wiped her cheeks and nodded. She picked up her wand and took a slow breath. 'Show me again,' she said. Master Elowen guided her hand. 'Start with a simple glow,' she instructed. Lily focused, and the blue tip of her wand shone steady and bright. Pip hooted softly, as if to say, 'Good job!' 8

Lily practiced the glow spell until it felt easy. Then she tried a tiny water spell, just a few drops in a cup. At first, only one drop appeared. Lily wanted to rush, but she remembered patience. She tried again and again. Each time, a little more water appeared. Pip watched, his golden eyes wide with curiosity. 9

Master Elowen taught Lily a swirl spell, moving her wand in a slow circle. 'Feel the magic flow through you,' she said. Lily practiced the swirl until it was smooth as silk. She combined it with the water spell, and a small spiral of water danced above her palm. Lily laughed with delight. 'I did it!' she cheered. 10

Now Lily was ready for the fountain. She closed her eyes and pictured it clearly: a tall, sparkling spray of water in the courtyard. She raised her wand and spoke the simple spell she had practiced. A stream of water arched into the air, but then it wobbled. Lily wanted to panic, but she took a breath and steadied her hand. 11

She remembered Master Elowen's words: 'Small steps.' Lily slowed her wand and focused on the water's path. The stream grew stronger and steadier. It rose higher and higher, until a beautiful fountain sparkled in the courtyard. Water danced and twinkled, and a tiny rainbow shimmered in the mist. Pip flew around it, trilling happily. 12

Master Elowen clapped her hands, and her silver braid swung as she laughed. 'You see?' she said. 'Patience and practice make the best magic.' Lily beamed, her gap-toothed smile wide. 'I couldn't have done it without your teaching,' she said. Master Elowen hugged her. 'And you did the hard work,' she replied. 13

From that day on, Lily practiced her simple spells every morning. She learned that mistakes were just steps on the path to success. Pip wore a tiny feather in his collar as a reminder of the funny day. Whenever Lily felt rushed, she would slow down and think of the feather fountain. Then she would smile and start again. 14

One sunny afternoon, the whole village came to see Lily's fountain. Children splashed in the water, and adults admired the sparkling spray. Lily stood proudly in her purple robe, her wand glowing softly. 'You've become a fine young magician,' Master Elowen said. Lily's heart swelled with happiness. 'I had a good teacher,' she replied. 15

And so Lily learned that magic, like all things, grows best with patience and care. She never forgot the day of the colorful feathers, and she always remembered to practice the basics first. With her kind teacher, her loyal owl Pip, and her trusty wand, Lily knew that every big dream starts with a small, steady step.
