🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:32

Toby is a cheerful village baker with curly ginger hair, a flour-dusted apron and a fondness for experimenting with new recipes. One morning he mixes flour, sugar and butter, adds a pinch of this and a dash of that, and shapes the dough into a giant round biscuit as big as a cartwheel. When he opens the oven, the biscuit has puffed up enormous and golden, with two chocolate-chip eyes that seem to twinkle at him. Tying a string of red-and-white bunting beneath it, Toby discovers the biscuit floats like a balloon, and soon he is lifted right out of his bakery, cart and all, into the sky above his village.

What follows is a gentle, accidental adventure. Toby drifts over golden wheat fields and wildflower patches, waving at surprised cows and scattering sheep, while birds fly alongside him. Below, a young rabbit named Pip spots the strange flying shape and bounds along the path cheering him on, and Granny Maple salutes him from her apple garden with the reminder that creativity is a wonderful thing. When the wind grows stronger, Toby learns to steer by tugging the bunting strings as if flying a kite. But the biscuit balloon is slowly shrinking, and he must find a safe place to land.

The story is written for young children and for adults reading aloud to them. Through Toby's mishap turned discovery, it shows how curiosity, improvisation and a willingness to try something new can turn an ordinary day into something memorable, and how sharing the results with a friend makes them sweeter still.

A Chapter from the Book

The Biscuit Balloon Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Toby the baker lived in a little village bakery filled with the sweet smell of cinnamon and warm bread. Every morning, he woke up early to bake treats for his neighbours. His curly ginger hair bounced as he worked, and his white apron was always dusted with flour. Toby loved trying new recipes, even if they sometimes went a little wrong. Today, he wanted to bake something extra special. 1

Toby mixed flour, sugar, and butter in a big bowl. He added a pinch of this and a dash of that, just to see what would happen. His freckled nose twitched as he stirred the dough. Then he rolled it out and shaped it into a giant round biscuit, as big as a cartwheel. He popped it into the oven and waited, humming a happy tune. 2

When Toby opened the oven door, the biscuit had puffed up bigger than ever, glowing with a soft golden light. Sparkles danced on its surface, and two chocolate-chip eyes seemed to twinkle at him. Toby gasped. Then he laughed. It looked just like a balloon! He tied a string of red-and-white bunting beneath it, ready to show his friends. 3

As Toby lifted the biscuit, a gentle breeze whooshed around it. The biscuit began to float, tugging at the bunting. Toby held on tight, but his feet lifted off the floor. Up he went, right out of the bakery door, with his cart still attached! The biscuit balloon bobbed in the air, and Toby's green eyes grew wide with wonder. 4

Higher and higher they rose, until the village looked like a tiny toy town. Toby's bakery cart dangled below the giant biscuit, swaying gently. He clutched the edge, his red neckerchief flapping in the wind. The biscuit balloon gave a friendly bounce, as if to say, 'Don't worry, this is fun!' Toby took a deep breath and smiled. 5

Below, a young rabbit named Pip spotted the strange flying shape. He hopped out of his burrow, his long ears standing straight up. 'Wow!' he squeaked, his pink nose twitching. He bounded along the path, following the floating cart. Pip waved his little paws and cheered, 'Go, Toby, go!' Toby waved back, delighted to have a friend on the ground. 6

The biscuit balloon drifted over fields of golden wheat and patches of colorful wildflowers. Toby saw cows staring up in surprise and sheep scattering in playful circles. He waved at everyone, and they waved back. A flock of birds flew alongside, chirping curious songs. Toby felt like a bird himself, soaring above the world. 7

In her garden, Granny Maple was picking apples. She heard a whoosh and looked up, her round spectacles glinting. There was Toby, floating by in his bakery cart! She raised her walking stick in a proud salute. 'Creativity is a wonderful thing, dear!' she called. Toby beamed, his gap-toothed smile shining. He would never forget this moment. 8

The wind grew stronger, and the biscuit balloon began to wobble. Toby held on tight as the cart swayed. He wondered how to steer. Then he remembered the bunting strings. He tugged gently on one side, and the balloon turned a little. It was like flying a kite! Toby practiced steering, feeling braver with each try. 9

Pip the rabbit raced to keep up, his fluffy white tail bobbing. 'You're doing great!' he shouted. Toby laughed and tugged the strings again. The biscuit balloon dipped low, then soared high, like a happy dance. Toby's floury apron fluttered, and he felt a thrill of excitement. This accidental adventure was turning into the best day ever. 10

Then Toby noticed the biscuit balloon was slowly shrinking. The magical air was escaping through a tiny crack! He had to land safely. 'Hold on, Biscuit!' he said. He steered toward a soft, grassy meadow. The balloon descended gently, like a feather floating down. Pip hopped alongside, ready to help. 11

With a soft bump, the cart landed in the meadow. The biscuit balloon settled beside it, now small and crumbly. Toby climbed out, his heart still racing. 'Thank you, Biscuit,' he whispered. The chocolate-chip eyes seemed to wink before the biscuit crumbled into a pile of sweet crumbs. Toby gathered them carefully, already thinking of a new recipe. 12

Pip bounded over, his daisy bobbing. 'That was amazing!' he cried. Toby smiled and shared the biscuit crumbs with his new friend. As they nibbled, Toby had an idea. He would bake special biscuits that could float, and share them with everyone. Creativity had turned an ordinary day into a grand adventure, and he couldn't wait for the next one. 13

Back in the village, Toby told everyone about his flying biscuit. Granny Maple patted his shoulder. 'You see, dear, a little imagination can take you anywhere,' she said. Toby nodded, his green eyes sparkling. He hung the red-and-white bunting above his bakery door as a reminder of his wonderful adventure. 14

From that day on, Toby kept experimenting in his bakery. Sometimes his treats puffed up, sometimes they fizzled, but he never stopped trying new things. Pip often visited, hoping for another flying adventure. And every morning, Toby looked up at the sky and smiled, knowing that the best adventures often begin by accident. 15

And so, the biscuit balloon became a beloved story in the village. Toby learned that creativity makes unexpected adventures possible, and that a little imagination can turn an ordinary day into something amazing. He never forgot his magical flight, and he always kept a warm biscuit ready for a friend. After all, you never know when the next adventure might begin.
