Ella discovers a sparkling silver-blue pencil on a dusty shelf in Grandpa's shop, and when the lines she draws begin to glow and come to life, she learns that it holds a strange and temporary magic. A tiny banana appears and fades, and Ella begins to wonder what else the crystal pencil can do. The next morning she spreads out her biggest sheet of paper and draws a miniature zoo, complete with a fence, a gate and little paths, certain that adding just a few animals could not possibly cause any trouble.
The animals do come to life: Pip, a cheeky thumb-sized monkey who swings from the pencil and races off toward the door; Tilly, a slow and spectacled tortoise with a woven satchel and a calm word for every problem; and Bo, a small blue-grey elephant in a red polka-dot neckerchief whose floppy ears and short trunk make him clumsy and easily worried. As Pip climbs the fruit bowl, juggles grapes and hides in a sneaker, and Bo knocks over crayons and a cereal box, Ella finds that magic needs care and that the little creatures need guidance rather than chasing.
Then the pencil's sparkle begins to fade, and Ella realizes the animals will disappear unless they are drawn back onto the page in time. Readers of this gentle children's tale follow Ella as she stays calm, asks Tilly for help and draws a tiny banana to coax Pip down, learning along the way about patience, kindness and taking responsibility for the things we bring into the world. The story is suited to young readers and to adults reading aloud with them.

Ella found the pencil on a dusty shelf in Grandpa's shop. It sparkled silver-blue, like a sliver of winter sky. When she drew a curly sun on scrap paper, the lines began to glow and shimmer. Ella's hazel eyes went wide. Her two puffy pigtails bounced as she gasped. "Grandpa, look!" she whispered. But Grandpa was busy, and the glowing sun had already faded to ordinary grey. 1
That night, Ella tested the pencil again. She drew a tiny banana on her notebook page. Pop! A real banana appeared, no bigger than her thumb. It smelled sweet and felt smooth. Ella clapped her hands. Her freckles crinkled with a huge grin. "It's a magic crystal pencil!" she cheered. "But it only lasts a little while," she noticed, as the banana slowly faded away. 2
The next morning, Ella had a wonderful idea. She spread her biggest paper on the floor and began to draw with the crystal pencil. First a fence, then a gate, then little paths. She drew a tiny zoo! Her mustard-yellow shirt with the star print brushed the page as she worked. "I'll fill it with animals," she said happily. "Just a few. What could possibly go wrong?" 3
Ella drew a tiny monkey first. She gave him soft brown fur, a cream face, and a long curling tail. Then she added a small green leaf behind one ear. Pop! The little monkey leaped right off the page. He was no bigger than Ella's thumb. "Ooh-ooh!" he squeaked, swinging from her pencil. "I'll call you Pip," Ella laughed. But Pip was already scampering toward the door. 4
Next, Ella drew a miniature tortoise with a sage-green shell and honey-gold patterns. She added tiny spectacles and a little woven satchel. The tortoise blinked and stretched her wrinkled neck. "Good morning, dear," she said slowly. "I am Tilly." She looked around the room. "And where has that cheeky monkey gone?" Ella spun around. Pip was nowhere to be seen! Tilly sighed. "We had better find him." 5
Then Ella drew a tiny elephant with soft blue-grey skin and big floppy ears. She tied a red polka-dot neckerchief around his neck. Pop! Bo the elephant tumbled out, knocking over a cup of crayons. "Oops!" he trumpeted softly. His big round eyes filled with worry. "It's all right, Bo," Ella said, patting his head. But just then, a crash came from the kitchen. Pip was in trouble! 6
Ella ran to the kitchen. Pip had climbed the fruit bowl and was juggling grapes! Splat, splat, splat! Purple juice dotted the floor. "Pip!" Ella cried. The monkey just giggled and swung to the curtains. Tilly plodded in slowly. "Magic needs care, dear," she said gently. "These little ones need guidance." Ella nodded. But how could she catch a monkey the size of her thumb? 7
Bo tried to help. He reached for Pip with his short trunk, but his oversized ears flapped and knocked a cereal box off the counter. Oops! Crunchy bits scattered everywhere. Bo's eyes went wide and watery. "I'm too clumsy," he sniffled. Ella knelt down and hugged him. "You're not clumsy, Bo. You're just little, like all of us." She wiped a tiny tear from his cheek. 8
The animals kept wandering. Pip hid inside Ella's red sneaker, and Bo accidentally sat on the TV remote. The channel changed with a loud BEEP! Tilly found Pip trying on a sock like a sleeping bag. "Oh, Pip," she chuckled. Ella chased the monkey through the living room, giggling despite herself. Then she noticed something. The crystal pencil in her pocket was beginning to feel warm. 9
Ella pulled out the pencil. Its sparkle was fading, turning dull grey at the tip. "Oh no!" she gasped. "The magic is running out!" The tiny zoo animals would fade away if they weren't back in the drawing soon. "Everyone, listen!" Ella called. But Pip was already swinging from the lampshade, and Bo was tangled in a curtain, trumpeting sadly. There was no time to lose. 10
Ella took a deep breath. Panicking wouldn't help. "Tilly," she said, "you're wise and calm. Can you help me round up the others?" Tilly nodded and adjusted her spectacles. "Of course, dear. Bo, come hold my shell. Pip, sweet monkey, come down for a snack." Ella drew a tiny banana with the pencil. Pop! Pip zoomed down the lamp and grabbed it, chattering happily. 11
Ella gently guided each animal back toward the big paper. She drew a soft bed for Bo, and he curled up inside the lines. "Goodnight, little elephant," she whispered. Tilly climbed slowly onto her drawn path, leaving tiny footprints. "Thank you, Ella," she said. "You are learning." Pip was the last one. He didn't want to go back! He hid behind the sofa cushions, peeking out with round amber eyes. 12
"Pip," Ella said softly, kneeling down. "Your home is in my drawing. And if you stay out here, the magic will fade and you'll disappear." She drew a tiny swing set on the zoo page. Pip's ears perked up. He crept forward, curious. Ella held out her hand, and Pip hopped onto her palm. "There you go," she smiled. "Safe and sound." She placed him gently on the drawn swing. 13
Pop! Pip landed on the swing set inside the drawing and began to swing. Tilly waved from her path, and Bo gave a sleepy trumpet from his cozy bed. The crystal pencil glowed one last time, bright and warm. Ella watched the little zoo shimmer on the page. The animals waved goodbye as the magic settled into the paper. Everything was safe and happy again.
