Pip is a tiny mountain fairy with warm peach skin, fluffy copper hair, amber eyes and translucent wings, wrapped in a knitted red scarf and a moss-green tunic. She lives high on a snowy peak where the wind sings and the clouds drift past, and she loves exploring the mountain paths in search of something new. One crisp winter morning she follows a trail of frosty footprints to a waterfall frozen solid, and inside the blue and silver ice she discovers a staircase of clear crystal winding upward, each step sparkling like a star.

Remembering her grandmother's warning to look before she leaps, Pip climbs slowly and carefully. She tests each step with her boot, holds her silver acorn pendant for luck, goes around a cracked step instead of jumping over it, keeps her wings folded against the gusting wind, and finds a safe ledge to pass a narrow gap. Her climb becomes a quiet lesson in balancing courage with caution, and at the top she is rewarded with a hidden winter garden of glowing frostbells, silver grass and a frozen pond, watched over by a kind snow bird named Nana Frost who saw how carefully she had climbed.

Written for young readers of children's fairy tales, the story offers a gentle, readable adventure about thinking before acting, trusting your own judgment and discovering that care and bravery go together. Its wintry setting, small heroine and soft-spoken guardian bird make it well suited to reading aloud at bedtime or to early independent readers who enjoy quiet magical journeys.

A Chapter from the Book

The Crystal Staircase Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Pip the mountain fairy lived high on a snowy peak, where the wind sang and the clouds floated by. She was small, about the size of a bird, with warm peach skin and short fluffy copper hair. Her amber eyes sparkled with curiosity, and her tiny translucent wings fluttered like leaves. Wrapped in her knitted red scarf and moss-green tunic, she loved to explore the mountain paths, always looking for something new. 1

One crisp winter morning, Pip followed a trail of frosty footprints. They led her to a waterfall that had frozen solid in the cold. The ice shimmered blue and silver, and inside it, something glowed. Pip pressed her nose to the cold surface and gasped. A staircase of clear crystal wound upward through the frozen water, each step sparkling like a star. 2

Pip's heart beat fast with excitement. 'A crystal staircase!' she whispered. Her tiny wings buzzed, ready to fly, but she remembered her grandmother's words: 'Brave little fairy, always look before you leap.' She took a deep breath and studied the stairs. Some steps looked slippery, and the ice around them was thin. She knew she must be careful. 3

Pip touched the first crystal step with her tiny brown boot. It was cold but solid. She took a slow step up, then another, holding her silver acorn pendant for luck. The staircase glittered around her, and the frozen waterfall made soft tinkling sounds. 'One step at a time,' she said to herself, and her red scarf fluttered in the icy breeze. 4

Halfway up, Pip found a step that was cracked. She stopped and looked closely. The crack was small, but she knew it could break. Instead of jumping over it, she tested it with her foot. It wobbled. 'I'll go around,' she decided, and carefully stepped to the side. Being cautious made her feel safe and smart. She smiled and continued her climb. 5

As Pip climbed higher, the wind grew stronger. It tugged at her scarf and whistled in her pointed ears. She held on tight to the crystal rail and moved slowly. 'Courage means trying, but caution means thinking,' she reminded herself. Her amber eyes watched every step, and her wings stayed folded so she wouldn't slip. The frozen waterfall sparkled all around her. 6

Near the top, Pip saw a narrow gap between two crystal steps. It was just big enough for her to squeeze through. She hesitated. 'What if I get stuck?' she wondered. But she remembered that being brave sometimes means finding another way. She looked around and found a tiny ledge. With a flutter of her wings, she hopped onto it and climbed safely past the gap. 7

Finally, Pip reached the top of the staircase. She stepped onto a platform of ice and gasped. Before her was a secret winter garden, hidden inside the waterfall. Ice-blue flowers glowed softly, and silver grass swayed in the still air. Frost-covered trees sparkled like diamonds, and a frozen pond lay quiet and smooth. It was the most beautiful place she had ever seen. 8

A gentle chirp made Pip turn. On a branch sat a snow bird with white feathers tipped in pale blue. Its round black eyes were kind, and a tiny orange beak peeked from its soft crest. 'Welcome, little fairy,' the bird said. 'I am Nana Frost. I watch over this garden.' Pip bowed politely, her copper hair bouncing. 'I'm Pip. I climbed the crystal staircase.' 9

Nana Frost fluttered down and perched on Pip's hand. 'Not many are brave enough to climb,' she said. 'But you were also careful. I saw you test each step.' Pip nodded. 'I wanted to be brave, but I didn't want to fall.' The snow bird's eyes twinkled. 'That is the best kind of courage,' she said. 'Come, let me show you the garden.' 10

Nana Frost led Pip to a patch of glowing blue flowers. 'These are frostbells,' she said. 'They only bloom for those who climb with care.' Pip touched a petal, and it rang like a tiny bell. She laughed with delight. The snow bird showed her the frozen pond, where fish slept under the ice, and the icicle arches that sparkled in the light. 11

Pip spent the afternoon exploring the winter garden with Nana Frost. They played hide-and-seek among the frost-covered trees and listened to the silence of the snow. Pip's red scarf stood out against the white, and her amber wings left a trail of sparkles. She felt happy and proud. 'I'm glad I was careful,' she said. 'Otherwise I might have missed all this.' 12

As the sun began to set, Pip knew it was time to go home. 'Will you come back?' asked Nana Frost. Pip hugged the snow bird gently. 'I will,' she promised. 'And I'll bring my friends, but we'll all be careful.' Nana Frost gave her a tiny frostbell to remember the garden. 'Whenever you feel unsure,' she said, 'remember to balance courage with caution.' 13

Pip flew down the crystal staircase, step by step, just as carefully as she had climbed. The frozen waterfall glittered in the evening light, and the wind whispered softly. She held the frostbell close and smiled. She had been brave, and she had been careful. Both felt good. Her wings carried her swiftly through the cold air, and her heart was full.
