The Day Numbers Disappeared

The Day Numbers Disappeared

Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

In a world where numbers have quietly slipped away, everyday life loses its shape: clocks no longer tell time, prices mean nothing, and counting becomes a mystery. This children's tale by Yavuz Demirkıran follows its young characters as they wake to a day when digits have vanished and must make sense of a world without them. What begins as confusion gradually turns into an adventure built on observation, cooperation, and the kind of questions children ask when something familiar suddenly stops working.

As the story unfolds, readers see how deeply numbers are woven into daily routines, from telling the time to sharing fairly and finding the way home. The characters learn to notice patterns, compare quantities, and solve problems together, discovering that mathematics is not only a school subject but a practical tool for understanding the world. The tale keeps its tone light and imaginative while gently encouraging curiosity and logical thinking.

The book is written for young readers, roughly in the early primary school years, and works well as a read-aloud story for families or a classroom text that opens discussion about numbers and their uses. Teachers and parents looking for a playful way to connect storytelling with early mathematical thinking will find it a useful starting point, and children who enjoy imaginative adventures with a puzzle at their heart are the story's natural audience.

The Day Numbers Disappeared Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

On a bright Monday morning, Ruby skipped out of her house in her mustard-yellow raincoat. Her curly black hair bounced in two puffy buns as she ran to school. But something was wrong. The street sign had no numbers on it. The clock on the tower was blank. Even the calendar on the bakery door had empty squares. Ruby stopped and stared. Where had all the numbers gone? 1

At school, nobody could count. The teacher's clock had no hands. The children couldn't tell how many pencils were in the box. At the grocery store, the shopkeeper scratched his head. 'How much for three apples?' he asked. But there were no prices. Ruby's green eyes grew wide. She pulled out her blue backpack and found a tiny glowing note. 'Follow the puzzles,' it said. 2

Ruby followed the note to the old oak tree in the park. A shimmering path of glowing digits led into a hollow. She took a deep breath and stepped inside. Suddenly, she was in a strange world where shapes built tall cities and equations floated like bridges. A small, round creature with a glowing pale-blue body and a silver crown stood before her. 'I am Zero,' it said. 3

'You are the leader of the numbers?' Ruby asked. Zero nodded. 'We left your town because nobody appreciates us. People just rush past, never thinking about how numbers help them every day.' Ruby thought for a moment. 'I appreciate you,' she said. 'Let me show you.' Zero looked curious. 'Solve three puzzles,' it said. 'Then we will see.' 4

The first puzzle appeared: a bridge made of numbers. 'Cross the bridge by counting the missing number,' Zero said. The sequence was 2, 4, 6, blank, 10. Ruby smiled. 'Eight!' she said. The bridge glowed and became solid. 'You know your counting,' Zero said, impressed. 'But that is just the beginning.' 5

The second puzzle was a giant clock with no numbers. 'Put the numbers back in order,' Zero said. Ruby carefully placed each number from 1 to 12. When she finished, the clock ticked and chimed. 'Numbers help us tell time,' Ruby said. 'Without them, we'd be late for everything!' Zero flicked its tiny arm, and a door appeared. 6

The third puzzle was a shop with empty price tags. 'Show me how numbers help here,' Zero said. Ruby picked up a toy and said, 'This costs three coins. If I buy two, that's six coins.' She counted out the coins. 'Numbers help us buy and sell fairly.' Zero's amber eyes sparkled. 'You do understand,' it whispered. 7

But Zero still looked doubtful. 'What about fun?' it asked. 'Numbers are not just for work.' Ruby laughed. 'Numbers are for fun too! Like sharing cookies fairly. If there are six cookies and three friends, each gets two.' She drew the cookies in the air, and they appeared. Zero giggled. 'That is fair!' 8

Zero led Ruby to a grand hall where all the numbers were hiding. They were tiny glowing creatures, each shaped like a digit. 'The numbers want to go home,' Zero said, 'but they need to know they are needed.' Ruby had an idea. 'My grandpa's birthday is today. We need numbers to bake his cake. Let's show them!' 9

Ruby and Zero traveled back to town with a parade of numbers. They went straight to Grandpa Pete's bakery. Grandpa Pete was confused. His pocket watch had no numbers, and his recipe card was blank. 'How much flour?' he asked. Ruby smiled. 'Let the numbers help!' she said. The numbers swirled around, filling in the measurements. 10

Together, they measured two cups of flour, one cup of sugar, and three eggs. The numbers glowed as they helped. 'See?' Ruby said. 'We need numbers for measuring ingredients.' Grandpa Pete's bushy white moustache twitched with a smile. 'And for setting the oven to 350 degrees!' he added. The numbers beamed with pride. 11

As the cake baked, the numbers saw how they helped everywhere. They fixed the clocks, filled in the addresses, and priced the goods in the shops. The town came alive with counting and measuring. Zero watched it all. 'You were right, Ruby,' it said. 'Numbers make life better.' Ruby hugged Zero. 'Will you stay?' she asked. 12

Zero nodded. 'We will stay, but only if you promise to appreciate us every day.' Ruby promised. The numbers cheered and zoomed back to their places. Clocks ticked, scales weighed, and prices appeared. The town was full of numbers again. Grandpa Pete's cake came out perfect. 'Time to celebrate!' he said. 13

At the party, Ruby shared the cake with her friends. 'Six slices for six people,' she said. 'One each!' Everyone laughed and clapped. Zero sat on Ruby's shoulder, wearing its silver crown. 'Numbers are everywhere,' Ruby said. 'They help us share, measure, and plan.' The numbers glowed warmly. They knew they were loved. 14

That night, Ruby looked at the stars and smiled. She knew that numbers would always be there, helping her understand the world. And Zero, the shy leader, had found a home. 'Thank you, Ruby,' Zero whispered. 'You showed us we matter.' Ruby hugged her blue backpack and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of puzzles and numbers. 15

The next morning, everything was normal again. Clocks had numbers, houses had addresses, and shopkeepers added up prices. But now, everyone appreciated the numbers a little more. Ruby walked to school, counting her steps. 'One, two, three...' she said. And Zero, hidden in her pocket, counted along. Numbers were home, and they were happy.
