A Chapter from the Book

The Galactic Bakery Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

In the middle of a starry sky, between the planets Twirl and Zing, floats the Galactic Bakery. Chef Orion runs it, a tall, sturdy man with warm brown skin and a friendly round face. His thick curly black hair has grey streaks, and his amber eyes sparkle as he bakes. With his white apron over a teal jumpsuit and a red neckerchief, he welcomes every traveler who stops for a treat. 1

Chef Orion's helper is Pip, a small mint-green creature with three tufty orange hair spikes and big round violet eyes. Pip has four little arms and tiny antennae that wiggle when he's excited. He wears a yellow satchel with a star-shaped buckle and tiny goggles pushed up on his head. Pip taste-tests everything and asks funny questions like, 'Does space sugar count as a vegetable?' 2

Every day, rockets and saucers dock at the bakery's door. Travelers from all planets come for Chef Orion's famous space buns and comet cookies. The bakery smells of cinnamon and stardust, and the windows glow with warm light. 'Welcome, welcome!' Chef Orion calls, dusting flour from his cheeks. 'Come in and find something yummy!' 3

One busy morning, a large, round visitor rolls in. It's Zorbflax, with bumpy purple skin and no hair. His six small yellow eyes blink in a row above a wide flat mouth. He wears an orange woven sash with a glowing blue gem and carries a dented metal lunch tin. 'Hello,' he whispers shyly. 'I only eat sour crunchy foods. Do you have any?' 4

Chef Orion scratches his moustache. 'Sour and crunchy? Let me think!' He tries pickled planet peels, but they're too sweet. He tries crispy moon rocks, but they're too salty. Zorbflax shakes his head politely. 'Thank you for trying,' he says. Pip whispers, 'Maybe we need a new recipe!' 5

Just then, a tall, slender visitor glides in. It's Luma, with pale blue translucent skin and long flowing silver hair. Her large green eyes shine, and delicate glowing spots line her arms. She wears a shimmering lavender robe with tiny star patterns and a pearl bracelet. 'I love sweet airy desserts,' she says softly. 'Do you have anything light and fluffy?' 6

Chef Orion's bakery has space buns and comet cookies, but nothing sweet and airy enough for Luma. He offers a cloud cake, but it's too heavy. He tries a star puff, but it's too dense. Luma smiles gently. 'That's all right,' she says. 'I'm happy just to be here.' Pip's antennae droop. 'Two visitors, two problems!' 7

Chef Orion looks at Zorbflax's lunch tin and Luma's hopeful eyes. 'I can invent new recipes!' he declares. Pip cheers, 'Yes! New recipes!' Chef Orion pulls out his silver mixing spoon. 'Zorbflax, what's your favorite sour food?' Zorbflax opens his tin. 'Sour snap-peas from my planet. They make my mouth tingle.' 8

Chef Orion and Pip experiment in the kitchen. They mix sour snap-peas with crunchy stardust. Pip taste-tests. 'Too sour!' he squeaks. They add a pinch of sweet nebula sugar. 'Still too crunchy!' Pip giggles. They try squishy space grapes. 'Now it's too squishy!' Chef Orion laughs. 'Cooking for new friends is tricky!' 9

For Luma, they whip up airy star-foam. Pip blows bubbles through a straw. The foam floats up to the ceiling. 'Too airy!' Luma laughs. They add a little moon-milk. 'Too heavy!' Pip sighs. Chef Orion's apron is covered in flour, and his moustache has a dab of purple jam. 'We'll keep trying!' he says. 10

Then Chef Orion has an idea. 'What if we mix sour and sweet?' He combines Zorbflax's sour snap-peas with Luma's airy starfoam. He adds a sprinkle of crunchy comet crumbs. He bakes it until it's golden and puffy. The bakery fills with a funny, fizzy smell. Pip's antennae twitch. 'It smells like a rainbow!' 11

Chef Orion presents the new treat to Zorbflax and Luma. 'Try this!' he says. Zorbflax takes a bite. His six eyes widen. 'It's sour and crunchy and a little sweet!' he cheers. Luma takes a bite. 'It's airy and sweet and a little crunchy!' she says. 'Delicious!' They both smile. Pip dances around the kitchen. 'It worked!' 12

Zorbflax and Luma sit together at a little table. They share the new treat and swap stories about their planets. Zorbflax tells about his family's sour-soup festivals. Luma describes floating gardens that smell like honey. 'I never knew sour could be so tasty,' Luma says. 'And I never knew sweet could be so light,' Zorbflax replies. They laugh together. 13

More travelers arrive, drawn by the happy smells. Chef Orion and Pip welcome each one. 'What do you like to eat?' Chef Orion asks. Some want spicy, some want salty, some want fizzy. Chef Orion invents new recipes for each. Pip fetches ingredients with all four arms. The bakery buzzes with kindness and curiosity. 14

Soon, the Galactic Bakery is full of friends from many planets. They share treats and stories, and they learn about each other's homes. Zorbflax shows off his glowing gem, and Luma's arm spots twinkle like tiny stars. Chef Orion beams. 'Every visitor brings a new recipe,' he says, 'and a new friend.' Pip nods. 'And new questions!' 15

From that day on, the Galactic Bakery is famous for its welcoming spirit. Chef Orion's silver mixing spoon hangs proudly, and his apron is always dusted with flour. Travelers come from far and wide to taste his inventions and share their own. Because at the Galactic Bakery, kindness and good food turn strangers into friends. And that's the best recipe of all.
