On a bright winter morning, a young explorer named Maya sets out in her yellow hat, red scarf and teal coat, following a trail of tiny animal prints into the frozen hills. The tracks lead her to a wide blue glacier that rises higher than a house, and there she discovers that the ice is not silent after all. The Old Glacier opens its soft, moonlit eyes and speaks to her, revealing a secret it has kept for many winters: beneath the clear, frozen surface blooms a garden of tiny flowers no bigger than a thumbnail, glowing in pink, violet, gold and sky blue.

With her magnifying glass and her big pockets, Maya learns how these small but strong flowers survive in the cold, protecting one another while the ice shelters them. She promises to be their guardian, packing a crack with soft snow and moving a sharp stone away from the garden's edge. When a heavy branch blocks the light, she discovers that she cannot lift it alone and must call her friends from the village to help. Later, a trickle of melting water threatens the garden, and Maya and her friends work all day to pack snow and smooth the ice until the flowers are safe again.

The story follows a curious child who learns that life can grow in surprising places and that kindness, care and teamwork are what keep it growing. Told in gentle, vivid language, it is suited to young readers and to adults reading aloud, offering a quiet lesson about looking closely at the natural world and taking responsibility for the fragile things found there.

The Glacier Garden Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

On a bright winter morning, a young explorer named Maya pulled on her yellow hat and red scarf. She loved to wander where the snow sparkled and the air felt crisp and new. Her teal coat had big pockets for treasures, and her magnifying glass hung on a string around her neck. Today, she followed a trail of tiny animal prints into the frozen hills. 1

The trail led to a wide, blue glacier that rose higher than a house. Its ice body was pale and smooth, with deep cracks and snow drifts resting on its shoulders like a mantle. Maya stopped and stared. The glacier seemed to breathe, slow and calm. 'Hello,' she whispered. The ice did not answer, but its soft, moonlit eyes blinked open and looked down at her kindly. 2

The Old Glacier spoke in a voice like cracking ice. 'Little explorer, welcome. I have kept a secret garden safe for many winters.' Maya's dark brown eyes grew wide. 'A garden? In the ice?' she asked. The glacier rumbled softly. 'Look closely,' it said. 'Life finds a way.' Maya knelt and pressed her mittens to the cold, clear surface. 3

Under the transparent ice, something glimmered. Maya pressed her face close and gasped. Tiny flowers bloomed in the frozen garden! Their petals were no bigger than a thumbnail, shining in pink, violet, gold, and sky blue. Each blossom glowed softly like a jewel, with a delicate frosty sparkle along its edges. Slender pale green stems held them steady in the cold. 4

'They're beautiful!' Maya cried. She pulled out her magnifying glass and studied the tiny petals. 'How do they survive down there?' The Old Glacier smiled, its icicle beard swaying. 'They are small but strong,' it said. 'The ice protects them, and they protect each other. But they need someone to keep them safe from harm.' 5

Maya nodded. 'I will protect them,' she promised. She saw a crack in the ice where warm wind might sneak in. She packed it with soft snow. She moved a sharp stone away from the garden's edge. The tiny flowers seemed to lean toward her, glowing a little brighter. 'Thank you,' whispered the Old Glacier. 'Kindness is the warmest thing in the cold.' 6

Every day after that, Maya visited the glacier garden. She brushed away loose snow that might block the light. She checked for danger and kept the ice clear. The little flowers waved their translucent petals as if to say hello. Their colors shone like colorful jewels in the cold. Maya felt proud to be their guardian. 7

One afternoon, a strong wind blew a branch onto the ice. It landed right over the garden, blocking the soft light. Maya tugged and pulled, but the branch was too heavy. 'I need help,' she said. The Old Glacier rumbled. 'Call your friends,' it suggested. 'Together, you are stronger.' Maya nodded and ran home to fetch them. 8

Soon Maya returned with two friends from her village. They pulled and pushed the branch until it rolled away. Light poured back onto the ice, and the tiny flowers glowed with joy. 'You see?' said the Old Glacier. 'Teamwork makes the garden grow.' Maya smiled, her round cheeks pink from the cold. The flowers sparkled brighter than ever. 9

But the next morning, Maya found something worrying. A thin stream of water trickled across the ice, melting a small groove. The flowers beneath looked dim. 'The ice is thinning,' the Old Glacier said softly. 'We must protect it.' Maya thought hard. She used her mittens to pack snow along the groove, and her friends helped fill the gap with fresh snow. 10

All day they worked, packing snow and smoothing the ice. The trickle slowed, then stopped. The garden was safe again. The Old Glacier let out a long, happy sigh. 'You have done well, little explorer,' it said. 'The flowers will keep blooming because of your care.' Maya's dark brown eyes shone. She had never felt so useful. 11

That evening, the tiny flowers did something amazing. They began to glow brighter and brighter, like a handful of jewels scattered under the ice. Their light danced across the glacier's face. 'They are saying thank you,' whispered the Old Glacier. Maya knelt close, her magnifying glass in her pocket. 'Thank you for letting me help,' she said. 12

From that day on, Maya visited often. She watched the glacier garden grow. New buds appeared, tiny and bright. The Old Glacier told her stories of other gardens in faraway ice. 'Life can grow in surprising places,' it said. 'All it needs is a little care.' Maya nodded. She knew it was true. 13

The seasons turned, and winter came again. Maya pulled on her yellow hat and red scarf, ready to visit her frozen friends. The Old Glacier welcomed her with a warm rumble. The ice flowers bloomed in their jewel colors, shining like tiny lanterns. 'Welcome back,' said the glacier. Maya smiled, her freckles crinkling. 'I missed you,' she said. 14

Maya kept her promise. She protected the ice and the flowers from harm, and they kept blooming, strong and bright. She learned that even the smallest, most fragile things can thrive when someone cares. And she learned that life can grow in the most unexpected places. Her heart felt full, like a garden in bloom.
