Sophie is a lively little girl with honey-blonde wavy hair who loves to paint more than anything else. One sunny afternoon she visits Grandma Rose's cozy kitchen, where her grandmother gives her a small golden paintbox. The paint pots inside sparkle like tiny jewels, and Grandma Rose explains that these colors are special because they shine with feelings. With her ginger kitten Pip watching curiously, Sophie sets up her paper on the kitchen table and begins to paint whatever she feels.
As Sophie works, each color becomes a different emotion. Bright yellow swirls into a sunny garden full of butterflies and joy; soft blue becomes a quiet sky and the flutter of worry about starting at a big new school; crackling orange bursts into excitement like a rocket; and gentle pink glows with gratitude as she paints Grandma Rose handing her the paintbox. When her friend Ben arrives looking sad, Sophie shows him her paintings and shares the golden paintbox, and together they create a bright rainbow while Pip leaves tiny paw prints on the paper.
The Golden Paintbox is a gentle story about naming and expressing feelings through art. Young readers learn that joy, worry, excitement and gratitude can all live together, and that painting or drawing them can make them easier to understand and share with others. The book suits children in the early primary years, parents and grandparents looking for a warm read-aloud, and anyone who wants to talk with a child about emotions in a simple, encouraging way.

Sophie was a little girl with honey-blonde wavy hair and a smile that stretched from ear to ear. She loved to paint more than anything in the world. One sunny afternoon, she skipped into Grandma Rose's cozy kitchen, her red pinafore dress swishing as she moved. Grandma Rose sat at the table, a teacup in her hand and a warm smile on her face. "I have something special for you," Grandma said, her brown eyes twinkling behind her round glasses. 1
Grandma Rose reached into a wooden drawer and pulled out a small, golden paintbox. It glimmered in the sunlight, and Sophie gasped. "Open it," Grandma said softly. Inside, the paint pots sparkled like tiny jewels. Each color seemed to glow with a secret light. Sophie touched the bright yellow pot and felt a warm, happy tingle in her fingers. "These colors are special," Grandma explained. "They shine with feelings." 2
Sophie's ginger kitten, Pip, padded over and rubbed against her leg. His blue ribbon collar jingled. "Can I paint now?" Sophie asked, her hazel eyes wide with excitement. Grandma Rose nodded. "Paint whatever you feel." Sophie set up her paper on the kitchen table. Pip sat beside her, his big green eyes watching curiously. Sophie dipped her brush into the bright yellow paint and began to paint. 3
As Sophie painted, the yellow seemed to dance on the paper. It swirled and twirled into a sunny garden full of butterflies. Sophie felt a bubble of joy rise in her chest. She painted a little girl with freckles, just like her, twirling in the garden. "This is joy!" Sophie laughed. Pip hopped onto the table and batted at the painted butterflies. The yellow paint glowed warmly, and Sophie's smile grew even bigger. 4
Next, Sophie opened the soft blue paint. As she painted, a gentle blue spread across the paper like a quiet sky. She painted a picture of herself standing at the edge of a big, new school. Her tummy felt a little fluttery. Pip tilted his head and meowed softly. "This is worry," Sophie whispered. The blue paint shimmered softly, and Sophie felt a little better sharing her worry with the paper. 5
Sophie's grandma came over and looked at the blue painting. "That's a beautiful worry picture," she said gently. "Sometimes it helps to paint our worries and let them out." Sophie nodded. She noticed that the worry didn't feel so big anymore. Pip curled up next to the painting and purred. Sophie gave him a little pat. "Let's try another color," she said, feeling brave. 6
Sophie chose the bright orange paint next. It was warm and crackly, like a firework about to burst. She painted a big, swirling funnel of orange with little sparks flying out. It looked like a rocket zooming into the sky! Pip's ears perked up, and he pounced at the paper, trying to catch the sparks. Sophie giggled. "This is excitement!" she said. The orange paint seemed to fizz and pop with energy. 7
Then Sophie picked up the pink paint. It was soft and glowy, like a gentle hug. She painted a picture of Grandma Rose with her silver bun and round glasses, handing her the golden paintbox. As she painted, Sophie felt a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. "This is gratitude," she said softly. Pip rubbed his head against her arm, and Sophie knew he was grateful for her too. The pink paint shimmered with love. 8
Sophie lined up her four paintings on the table. Yellow joy, blue worry, orange excitement, and pink gratitude. Each one glowed with its own special light. Pip walked along the line, sniffing each picture with curiosity. "They're all different," Sophie said, "but they're all mine." She felt proud of her colorful feelings. Grandma Rose smiled and said, "You've painted your heart, my dear." 9
Just then, Sophie's friend Ben knocked on the door. He looked a little sad. "Do you want to see my paintings?" Sophie asked. Ben nodded. When he saw the colorful pictures, his eyes widened. "They're so bright!" he said. Sophie showed him the yellow joy painting first. Ben's frown turned upside down. "I feel happy just looking at it!" he said. 10
Sophie beamed. "Would you like to paint too?" she asked. Ben nodded eagerly. Sophie shared her golden paintbox, and together they painted a big, bright rainbow. Pip batted at the paintbrushes and left tiny paw prints on the paper. "That's a happy accident!" Sophie laughed. The rainbow sparkled with all the colors of their feelings. Ben painted a big yellow sun, and Sophie painted a pink heart. 11
Grandma Rose watched from her chair, her teacup warming her hands. "Art helps us share what's in our hearts," she said. "When we share our feelings, they grow brighter." Sophie looked at her paintings and at Ben's smiling face. She realized that every feeling, even worry, had its own beautiful color. And sharing them made everything better. Pip meowed in agreement and curled up in a patch of sunlight. 12
That evening, Sophie hung her paintings on the wall. Yellow joy, blue worry, orange excitement, and pink gratitude. They glowed softly in the fading light. Pip sat on the windowsill, his tail swishing. Sophie hugged Grandma Rose. "Thank you for the golden paintbox," she whispered.
