A Chapter from the Book
The Golden Seaweed Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN
Coral the clownfish darted through the busy coral reef. Her orange body with three white stripes flashed between the colorful branches. She loved exploring every corner of her ocean home. One morning, she spotted something new near the edge of the reef. Something bright and shiny, glowing like the sun. 1
Coral swam closer. There, swaying gently in the water, was a seaweed plant with leaves that shone like gold. The golden seaweed sparkled and glittered, sending little rays of light across the reef. Coral's round black-rimmed eyes grew wide with wonder. She had never seen anything so beautiful in her whole life. 2
Coral raced back to tell everyone. 'Come quick! There's a golden seaweed near the reef!' she called. Finn the pufferfish puffed up with excitement, his pale yellow body covered in small dark spots. Pip the seahorse curled his tiny goldenorange tail around a piece of coral and listened. All the ocean animals hurried to see the amazing plant. 3
Soon a crowd gathered around the golden seaweed. 'I want a piece!' shouted Finn, his bulging eyes gleaming. 'I want the biggest piece!' The other fish and crabs and snails all began to push and shove. Everyone wanted to take some of the shiny plant home. The golden seaweed swayed nervously as the animals rushed toward it. 4
Coral darted in front of the crowd. 'Wait! Maybe we should share it!' she said, her small fins fluttering. But Finn had already opened his woven seaweed satchel. 'I saw it first!' he declared. The animals began to argue. Who should get the golden leaves? How much should each take? The beautiful plant was in danger of being picked bare. 5
Just then, a slow, calm voice spoke from behind them. 'What is all this fuss about?' It was Shelly the sea turtle, gliding gently through the water. Her green-brown patterned shell was huge and old, and her wrinkled grey-green skin showed her many years. Small round spectacles rested on her nose. The animals fell silent. 6
Shelly looked at the golden seaweed with gentle dark eyes. 'Ah, the golden seaweed,' she said softly. 'I have not seen one of these in many years.' The animals crowded around her, asking questions. Finn held his satchel tightly. Coral swam close to Shelly. 'Is it rare?' Coral asked. Shelly nodded slowly. 'Very rare indeed,' she said. 7
'Why is it so special?' asked Pip the seahorse, his long snout twitching with curiosity. He had a thin green ribbon tied around his neck. Shelly smiled. 'The golden seaweed is not just pretty,' she explained. 'It is a home for tiny creatures. Little shrimp and baby fish hide in its golden leaves. It also makes the water cleaner for all of us.' 8
Finn frowned. 'But I wanted a piece for my collection,' he said, patting his satchel. Shelly turned her wise old eyes on him. 'If everyone takes a piece, there will be none left,' she said. 'And then where will the little creatures live? Where will they hide?' The animals looked at each other. They had not thought of that. 9
Coral swam in a small circle, thinking. 'So if we pick it all, the tiny creatures will have no home,' she said. 'And the water will not be as clean.' The other animals nodded. Pip the seahorse uncurled his tail and swam closer to the golden seaweed. 'It is so beautiful,' he whispered. 'But it is also important.' 10
Finn looked at his satchel. He had wanted the biggest piece, but now he felt a little ashamed. 'Maybe I do not need a piece,' he said quietly. He slowly opened his satchel and let it float away. 'I would rather have the golden seaweed stay here.' The other animals watched him. Then one by one, they put down the pieces they had gathered. 11
Shelly smiled her gentle smile. 'That is a wise choice,' she said. 'We can visit the golden seaweed every day. We can watch it shine and know that it is helping our home.' Coral nodded. 'We can protect it instead of picking it,' she said. 'We can share and care for our reef.' The animals all agreed. 12
From that day on, the golden seaweed had many guardians. Coral checked on it every morning. Finn puffed up proudly whenever he saw it, guarding it with his satchel put away. Pip the seahorse curled his tail around a nearby coral branch and watched over the smallest leaves. They all shared the joy of seeing it shine. 13
The golden seaweed grew taller and brighter. Tiny shrimp and baby fish darted in and out of its leaves. The water around the reef sparkled. The ocean animals learned that some treasures are best left where they belong. They shared the beauty of the golden seaweed with everyone who visited the reef. 14
Shelly the wise turtle often swam by to see how her friends were doing. 'You have all done well,' she said. 'You have protected something precious.' The animals felt proud. They had learned that caring for nature means sharing and caring for each other. And the golden seaweed swayed gently, shining like a golden sun under the sea. 15
And so the coral reef remained a happy, healthy home for all the ocean animals. The golden seaweed continued to shine, a bright reminder of their promise. Coral, Finn, Pip, and all their friends knew that some treasures are not for taking, but for protecting. They shared the reef's beauty with everyone, and the golden seaweed shone on, safe and loved.
