A Chapter from the Book

Maya stood in the schoolyard in her sky blue graduation gown, red sneakers tapping the grass. Her curly black hair bounced in two puffs tied with yellow ribbons. The paper graduation cap sat crooked on her head. Beside her, Leo adjusted his green gown and checked his backpack full of snacks. Priya held her sketchbook close, her long braid swaying. Today was graduation day, and something wonderful was about to happen. 1

The sky filled with a soft hum. A giant hot air balloon floated down, its rainbow stripes glowing like a gentle rainbow. Golden ropes shimmered, and a smiling face was painted on the front. The basket was woven wicker, big enough for all the children. Maya gasped. Leo grinned his wide friendly grin. Priya whispered, 'It's beautiful.' The balloon lowered a golden rope, inviting them in. 2

Maya stepped forward first, her freckles crinkling with excitement. 'Hello, balloon!' she called. The balloon hummed warmly, 'I am here to take you on one last adventure.' Leo helped Priya into the basket, then climbed in himself. The other children piled in, laughing and chatting. The balloon glowed brighter. 'Where shall we go?' it asked. Maya looked at her friends and smiled. 'Show us our best memories.' 3

With a gentle whoosh, the balloon rose. The school shrank below, and the wind sang past their ears. Leo pulled out snacks and shared them around. 'For the journey,' he said. Priya opened her sketchbook and drew the rainbow stripes. Maya pointed at the clouds. 'Look!' she cried. The balloon carried them higher, into a sky full of sunshine and soft white clouds. The adventure had begun. 4

The first place they landed was a bright art room, but it floated in the clouds. Paintings hung in the air, and clay sculptures danced. Priya's eyes sparkled. 'This is like our art class!' she said. She quickly sketched the floating easels. Maya tried to paint a swirl, but it wobbled. Leo laughed kindly. 'Try again,' he said. With a deep breath, Maya painted a perfect rainbow. The balloon hummed, 'You have grown brave.' 5

Next, the balloon flew to a floating library. Books fluttered like birds, and words shimmered on the walls. Leo remembered how he used to struggle with reading. 'I was scared of big words,' he said. Priya handed him a book. 'But you kept trying,' she said. Leo read a page aloud, his voice steady. The other children cheered. The balloon glowed. 'You have grown persistent,' it hummed softly. 6

Then they arrived at a giant playground in the sky. Swings swung by themselves, and a slide spiraled into a cloud. Maya remembered the day she was too scared to climb the ladder. 'I was afraid of heights,' she said. Leo gave her a thumbs-up. 'You can do it now,' he said. Maya climbed the ladder and slid down with a whoop. The balloon spun happily. 'You have grown courageous,' it hummed. 7

The balloon drifted to a quiet garden with flowers that sang. Priya noticed a tiny blue flower hiding under a leaf. 'Look at this little one,' she said, sketching it carefully. The others gathered around. 'It's so small,' said Leo, 'but it's beautiful.' Priya smiled. 'That's what I learned at school—to notice small things.' The balloon glowed warmly. 'You have grown observant,' it hummed. The children felt proud. 8

Next, they visited a floating teamwork field. A puzzle bridge stretched across a gap, missing pieces. 'We can solve it together,' said Maya. Leo found a piece shaped like a star. Priya saw where it fit. They worked as a team, laughing and helping. The bridge clicked into place. The balloon hummed, 'You have grown as friends.' They cheered, and the balloon did a happy spin. 9

The last stop was a giant memory tree. Photos of their school days hung from the branches. There was the time Leo shared his lunch with Maya. There was Priya's painting in the art show. There was the day they all built a cardboard castle. The children pointed and laughed. 'Remember when?' they said. The balloon hummed, 'These memories made you who you are.' 10

As they floated back toward school, Maya looked at her friends. 'I feel happy,' she said. 'And brave,' said Leo. 'And ready,' said Priya. The balloon began to descend gently. 'Now you know how much you have grown,' it hummed. 'Finishing school is not an ending. It is a bright new beginning.' The children hugged each other. They felt warm and strong. 11

The balloon landed softly in the schoolyard. The children climbed out, waving goodbye. 'Thank you, balloon!' they called. The balloon glowed one last time, then floated up into the sky. Maya, Leo, and Priya stood together, smiling. 'We will always remember this,' said Maya. 'And we will always be friends,' said Leo. Priya nodded, her sketchbook full of memories. 12

That evening, Priya drew the balloon in her sketchbook. She added each place they visited: the art room, the library, the playground, the garden, the teamwork field, and the memory tree. She drew Maya climbing bravely and Leo sharing snacks. She drew the balloon's smiling face. 'Our graduation balloon,' she wrote. The drawing glowed with color and joy. 13

The next day, the children started their new schools. Maya joined the art club. Leo signed up for reading buddies. Priya took an advanced drawing class. They met at the park and shared their new adventures. 'The balloon was right,' said Maya. 'We are ready.' They laughed and played, knowing their friendship would always be a magical adventure.
