The Library Beneath the Playground

The Library Beneath the Playground

Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

When a worn patch of grass behind the school playground gives way under a child's feet, what lies below is not dirt and roots but a staircase, a door, and a library no adult has ever seen. In The Library Beneath the Playground, Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN turns an ordinary schoolyard into the entrance to a hidden world where books behave in ways readers will not expect: shelves that rearrange themselves, stories that spill out of their covers, and librarians who guard rules older than the town above them.

The tale follows its young heroes as they explore this underground collection and discover that every book down there is connected to someone living above, and that some stories have gone missing. To set things right, the children must learn how the library works, why certain volumes are locked away, and what happens when a story is left unfinished for too long. Along the way the book quietly celebrates curiosity, careful reading, and the courage it takes to ask questions when everyone else has stopped noticing what is under their feet.

Written for young readers who are ready for a longer story, the book works equally well as a read-aloud for families and as a classroom text. Its short chapters, warm humour and vivid underground settings make it approachable for children building reading stamina, while the ideas it raises about memory, responsibility and the value of libraries give older readers and adults plenty to talk about afterwards.

A Chapter from the Book

The Library Beneath the Playground Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Olivia loved recess best of all. She raced across the playground, her red sneakers kicking up dust, her yellow raincoat flapping like wings. Her curly puff-bun hair bounced as she chased a runaway ball. Near the old oak tree, the ball rolled into a patch of tall grass and disappeared. Olivia pushed the grass aside and gasped. A small trapdoor, hidden beneath the playground, had creaked open. 1

Olivia knelt and peeked inside. A wooden ladder led down into a warm, golden light. She could hear the soft rustle of pages and a tiny voice humming. Her heart thumped with curiosity. She clutched her canvas satchel and climbed down, one rung at a time. At the bottom, she found a room full of books—more books than she had ever seen. A little creature in a burgundy vest looked up and blinked. 2

“Hello!” said the creature, adjusting its tiny spectacles. “I’m Pippin, the book-sorter. You must be Olivia. Mr. Penn said you’d come.” Olivia’s hazel eyes grew wide. A tall, stooped man with round glasses and a green bow tie stepped out from behind a shelf. “Welcome to the library beneath the playground,” he said gently. “Here, every book tells a story about tomorrow.” 3

Mr. Penn showed Olivia a shelf labeled “Tomorrow.” Each book glowed softly. She pulled one down and read: “Tomorrow, a surprise visitor will bring cupcakes to class.” Olivia grinned, her gap-toothed smile bright. The next day, a visitor did bring cupcakes! Olivia raced back down the ladder after school. “It came true!” she said. Pippin nodded, but his fluffy tail flickered. “Sometimes stories shift,” he warned. 4

The next book Olivia read said: “Tomorrow, Olivia will find a shiny coin on the playground.” But the story changed when a gust of wind blew it into a drain. The book’s words scrambled, then rewrote themselves. “The coin will be found by someone else,” it now said. “The future isn’t fixed,” Mr. Penn explained. “Books predict, but they never promise. Choices change the story.” 5

Olivia visited the library every day. She read about silly surprises and happy accidents. But one afternoon, Pippin’s tail glowed bright gold—a warning. “A story is shifting fast!” he cried. Olivia grabbed the book he pointed to. Its cover was dark green, and its title read: “The Garden’s Last Day.” Her smile faded. “Tomorrow, the school garden will be destroyed,” she read aloud. 6

Olivia’s hands trembled. “We have to stop this!” she said. Mr. Penn adjusted his glasses. “Predictions are not promises,” he reminded her. “But if you act with care, you can change the ending.” Pippin stamped the book with his tiny ink stamp. “I’ll help!” he squeaked. They climbed the ladder and burst out of the trapdoor into the afternoon sun. 7

Olivia ran to find Ms. Hart, the school gardener. Ms. Hart was kneeling in the garden, her green apron dusty and her straw hat shading her warm face. “The garden is in danger!” Olivia said, breathless. Ms. Hart listened carefully, her dark eyes serious. “A new parking lot?” she said. “That’s the rumor. But we can’t let that happen. This garden is for everyone.” 8

Ms. Hart and Olivia called the whole school together. Children, teachers, and parents gathered around the garden beds. “We need to show how much this garden means,” Ms. Hart said. Olivia’s class made signs and painted posters. They wrote letters to the school board. Pippin hid in Olivia’s satchel, stamping each letter with a tiny golden star. Everyone worked together, hope growing like the sunflowers. 9

The next morning, Olivia peeked into the green book. The words were shifting again! “The garden will be saved,” it now read. “Because a brave girl and her friends spoke up.” Olivia whooped with joy. She raced to the garden, where Ms. Hart was hugging a parent. The parking lot plan had been stopped. “We did it!” Olivia cheered. Pippin’s tail glowed so bright it looked like a little lamp. 10

That afternoon, Olivia visited Mr. Penn. “The book changed because we changed,” she said. Mr. Penn smiled, his bushy eyebrows lifting. “Exactly. The future is shaped by our choices. You chose to act, and you made the story brighter.” He handed her a small notebook. “For you. Write your own tomorrows.” Olivia hugged it tight. 11

Before she left, Pippin pressed a tiny brass button into her hand. “A reminder,” he said, “that even small helpers can make a big difference.” Olivia tucked it into her satchel next to her star pin. She climbed the ladder and stepped out into the golden afternoon. The playground buzzed with happy voices, and the garden bloomed greener than ever. 12

From that day on, Olivia kept a close eye on the garden. She watered the flowers and pulled weeds with Ms. Hart. Sometimes she found a new book under her pillow, glowing faintly. But now she knew: the best stories were the ones she wrote herself, with kindness and courage. 13

Mr. Penn still tended the library beneath the playground. Pippin still stamped each book with care. And Olivia still visited, curling up in a cozy corner to read about tomorrows that might be. But she never forgot the lesson the books taught her: predictions are not promises. Thoughtful choices can change the future and make it hopeful and bright. 14
