In the cheerful town of Ticktock, no two clocks ever seem to agree. The bakery clock runs fast, the school clock runs slow, and the town hall clock rings at odd moments, so nobody can decide when the Saturday parade should begin. Eight-year-old Nora, a curious girl in a yellow detective coat with a magnifying glass around her neck, decides to solve the mystery of the disagreeing clocks. With her friend Pip, a tiny sparrow with a red ribbon on one leg, she sets out to compare every clock in town.
Nora visits the town clockmaker, Grandpa Otto, who explains that every clock has a heart called a mechanism. Following his advice, she records how fast or slow each clock runs and draws their gears and pendulums in her notebook. At the bakery, the school and the town hall, the clocks are only a minute or two off. But the old tower clock at the edge of town behaves strangely, losing a different amount of time each day. Patient observation finally reveals the cause: the tower leans, and when the wind blows it sways, putting uneven pressure on the gears.
Nora brings her discovery to Grandpa Otto and Mayor Bell, and the whole town works together to straighten the tower. The story shows young readers how careful observation, note-taking and teamwork can solve a puzzle that puzzles everyone else. It is a gentle read for children who enjoy mysteries, and it quietly teaches that asking questions and looking closely are the tools of a good detective.

In the cheerful town of Ticktock, every clock had its own idea about time. The bakery clock ran fast, the school clock ran slow, and the town hall clock always rang at odd moments. Nobody could ever agree on when to start the Saturday parade. Nora, a small girl with light-brown skin and curly dark hair in two puffs, loved a good mystery. She wore a yellow detective coat with big pockets and a magnifying glass on a string around her neck. 1
Nora was eight years old and the town's little clock detective. Her round hazel eyes noticed everything, from a lost button to a crooked picture frame. Her friend Pip, a tiny sparrow with a red ribbon tied around one leg, often rode on her shoulder. Pip chirped at anything unusual, and his bright black eyes missed nothing. Together they made a clever team. 'Today,' Nora said, 'we solve the mystery of the disagreeing clocks.' 2
Nora went to see Grandpa Otto, the town clockmaker. He was tall and a little stooped, with fluffy white hair and a bushy moustache. His round glasses sat on his nose, and a tiny screwdriver peeked from his leather apron pocket. 'Every clock has a heart called a mechanism,' he said. 'Watch closely, and you can hear it tick.' Nora listened carefully and wrote in her notebook: 'Clocks have hearts. Compare them.' 3
Nora decided to visit every clock in town. First, she went to the bakery, where the clock above the oven ticked quickly, like a happy rabbit. She drew its gears in her notebook and noted the time: two minutes fast. Pip flew up to the clock face and chirped. 'Good job, Pip,' Nora said. 'One clock checked, many more to go.' The baker gave her a warm bun for energy. 4
Next, Nora visited the school clock. It hung in the hallway and ticked slowly, as if it were sleepy. She compared its mechanism to the bakery clock. The gears looked similar, but something made it run differently. Pip fluttered up and pointed his tiny beak at the pendulum. Nora wrote: 'School clock: three minutes slow. Pendulum swings slowly.' She wondered why the clocks could not agree. 5
At the town hall, Mayor Bell greeted Nora with a wide smile. She wore a purple coat with gold buttons and a tall hat with a small clock face on it. 'Our clocks are a mystery, little detective!' she said. Nora observed the town hall clock carefully. It was big and shiny, and its hands moved steadily. She wrote: 'Town hall clock: one minute fast. Seems fine.' But three clocks with three different times puzzled her. 6
Nora and Pip walked to the edge of town, where an old tower clock stood. It was tall and a little crooked, and its hands moved strangely. Nora tilted her head. 'This clock looks like it's leaning,' she said. Pip flew up to the top and chirped loudly. Nora compared it to her notes. The tower clock was five minutes off, but not always the same amount. 'Interesting,' she murmured. 7
Back at Grandpa Otto's workshop, Nora spread out her notes. She had drawn each clock's mechanism and written how fast or slow it ran. Grandpa Otto leaned over her shoulder. 'You have a detective's eye,' he said. 'Now compare the gears and pendulums.' Nora noticed that the tower clock's gears moved a little unevenly. 'Why would that happen?' she asked. Grandpa Otto smiled. 'Maybe something is affecting it.' 8
Nora returned to the tower clock with Pip. She watched it for a long time. The tower leaned slightly to one side. When the wind blew, the tower swayed just a tiny bit, and the clock's hands jumped. Nora's eyes widened. 'The leaning tower makes the clock run differently!' she exclaimed. Pip chirped and did a little dance. Nora wrote in big letters: 'Tower leans → clock runs unevenly!' 9
Nora hurried to tell Grandpa Otto. He examined the tower with her. 'You're right,' he said. 'The tower's lean puts extra pressure on the gears. That's why its time is never steady.' Nora beamed. 'So if we fix the lean, the clock will tick properly!' Grandpa Otto nodded. 'And the town can agree on time again.' They went to find Mayor Bell. 10
Mayor Bell listened carefully. Her warm dark eyes twinkled. 'A leaning tower! Who would have thought?' She called the town meeting. Everyone gathered in the square. Nora stood on a small box and explained her discovery. 'The tower clock leans, so its hands move differently. That's why our clocks disagree.' The townspeople nodded. 'Let's fix the tower!' someone shouted. Mayor Bell clapped her hands. 11
The whole town helped. Grandpa Otto brought his tools, and strong neighbors straightened the tower with ropes and beams. Nora watched as they worked. Pip flew around, chirping encouragement. Mayor Bell supervised with her brass pocket watch in hand. 'Steady now!' she called. Slowly, the tower stood straight. Grandpa Otto adjusted the clock's mechanism. 'There,' he said. 'Now it will tick true.' 12
When the tower clock was fixed, something wonderful happened. All the clocks in Ticktock began to tick together. The bakery clock, the school clock, and the town hall clock all showed the same time. Mayor Bell cheered, 'Hurray for Nora, our little clock detective!' Everyone clapped and whistled. Nora's cheeks turned pink. She looked at her magnifying glass and smiled. 'Careful observation solves mysteries,' she said.
