A Chapter from the Book

The Little Stage Builder Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Oliver loved the smell of fresh wood and the sound of a hammer tap-tap-tapping. In his small town, he was known as the little stage builder. Every summer, traveling performers came to the festival, and Oliver built them a stage. His mustard-yellow hard hat sat proudly on his curly dark-brown hair, and his tool belt jingled as he walked. 1

Oliver's best friend, Mira, always helped him. She carried a small notebook and sketched ideas with quick, sure strokes. Her teal tunic fluttered as she pointed at the empty lot where the stage would go. "This year, let's make it extra special," she said, her dark eyes sparkling. Oliver grinned, his hazel eyes bright with excitement. 2

Grandpa Frank, a retired carpenter, taught Oliver everything he knew. With his grey moustache and green flannel shirt, he looked like a kind old bear. "Strong materials and safe plans," Grandpa always said. "That's the secret to any good build." Oliver listened carefully, his small, sturdy hands already itching to start building. 3

One sunny morning, a traveling performer named Pip arrived. She wore a bright purple vest and a small feathered hat. Her wavy orange-red hair bounced as she jumped out of her wagon. "I'm Pip!" she announced. "I've come to perform at your festival, but I need a stage by Saturday." Oliver's heart swelled with pride. "We'll build you one!" he promised. 4

Oliver and Mira got to work right away. They measured boards and drew plans in Mira's notebook. Grandpa Frank helped them choose wood. But as they built, Oliver noticed something wrong. The old stage from last year was still standing, and its boards were cracked and wobbly. "That doesn't look safe," Mira whispered, her braids swinging as she shook her head. 5

Oliver walked over to the old stage and gave it a gentle push. It swayed dangerously. "We can't let Pip perform on this," he said. "It might break!" Grandpa Frank nodded gravely. "We need to rebuild it with stronger materials. Safety first, always." Oliver felt a knot in his stomach. Rebuilding would take time, and the festival was only days away. 6

That evening, Oliver couldn't sleep. He thought about Pip's happy face and the danger of the wobbly stage. He didn't want to disappoint her. So he made a decision: he would redesign the stage from scratch. He would use stronger wood and safer plans. He would make it the best stage ever, and he would keep everyone safe. 7

The next morning, Oliver called Mira and Grandpa Frank together. "We need a new plan," he said. "Stronger materials, better support." Mira opened her notebook and started sketching. Grandpa Frank suggested thick wooden beams and metal braces. Oliver listened and added his own ideas. They worked as a team, and slowly a new design took shape. 8

Oliver and Mira went to the lumber yard. They picked out sturdy oak boards and shiny metal screws. Oliver's tool belt felt heavier than ever, but he didn't mind. He knew that using the right materials was important. "These will hold up," he said confidently. Mira wrote down every detail in her notebook, her red scarf flapping in the breeze. 9

Back at the festival grounds, Oliver and Grandpa Frank started building. Oliver hammered nails and measured boards, his small hands working carefully. Mira tested each piece for wobbles. "This one's strong!" she called out. Pip watched from a distance, her green eyes wide with wonder. "You're really building me a new stage?" she asked. Oliver nodded, his hard hat bobbing. 10

As they worked, Oliver noticed that the old stage was even more broken than he thought. One of its legs was cracked, and the platform sagged. "We need to take it down completely," he told Grandpa Frank. "It's too dangerous to leave up." Grandpa agreed. Together, they carefully removed the old boards and set them aside. The new stage would be much safer. 11

Oliver's creativity sparkled as he added a few special touches. He built a small ramp so performers could easily walk on, and he added colorful flags along the back. "It's not just safe," Mira said, sketching the flags. "It's beautiful!" Pip clapped her hands. "I can't wait to perform on it!" Oliver smiled, feeling proud of their hard work. 12

Finally, the new stage was ready. Oliver, Mira, and Grandpa Frank stepped back to admire it. The stage stood tall and strong, with thick wooden beams and a smooth platform. "Let's test it," Oliver said. He climbed up and jumped a little. The stage didn't wobble at all. "It's perfect!" Mira cheered. Grandpa Frank patted Oliver on the back. "Great job, little builder." 13

On the day of the festival, everyone gathered around the new stage. Pip stepped up in her purple vest, her feathered hat tilted just right. She sang and danced, and the audience clapped and cheered. Oliver watched from the front row, his hard hat in his lap. He felt warm and happy inside. He had used his skills to help someone, and that felt better than anything. 14

After the show, Pip ran over to Oliver. "Thank you!" she said, giving him a big hug. "You saved the festival!" Oliver blushed. "I couldn't have done it without Mira and Grandpa Frank," he said. Mira grinned, and Grandpa Frank winked.
