The Missing Bell Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Every morning in Willowbrook Village, the old brass bell rang out from the tall bell tower. It called the children to school and the farmers to their fields. Lily loved that bell. She was eight years old, with warm brown skin and curly black hair tied in two short puffs. Her round magnifying glass hung on a string around her neck, always ready for a mystery. 1

Lily lived in a little blue house near the village square. She wore her mustard-yellow raincoat every day, even when the sun was shining. In her brown satchel she kept a notebook, a pencil, and a small red ribbon for good luck. Her red boots made a happy tap-tap sound on the cobblestones. "Detective Lily, ready to look!" she said to herself each morning. 2

One morning, Lily woke up and listened. Something was missing. The village was quiet, far too quiet. The bell had not rung at all. She pulled on her red boots and ran to the square. The bell tower stood empty and still. The great bell was gone! Lily's large hazel eyes grew wide. "A mystery," she whispered. 3

A small crowd had gathered near the tower. Everyone was whispering and pointing. "Who took our bell?" asked the baker. "We need it for the morning call!" said the farmer. Lily stepped forward, her magnifying glass swinging. "I am a detective," she said, with her gap-toothed smile. "I will find out what happened. But first, everyone must look for clues." 4

Lily's little dog Pip came running, his floppy brown ears bouncing. His red collar had a small brass tag shaped like a bell, and it jingled as he wagged his tail. "Woof! Let's go, let's go!" Pip seemed to say. He dashed around the tower in circles, sniffing everything quickly. "Not so fast," said Lily. "Detectives must be patient." 5

Lily knelt down near the tower door. She held her magnifying glass close to the ground. There, in the soft dirt, she saw marks. They were wide and deep, like the tracks of a cart. The tracks led away from the tower and toward the edge of the village. "Clues!" Lily said. "Pip, look here. These tracks show us the way." Pip sniffed the tracks and wagged his tail. 6

Lily followed the tracks slowly. She did not run or hurry. Pip wanted to race ahead, but Lily held his leash gently. "Patience, Pip," she said. "If we rush, we might miss something important." The tracks curved past the bakery and around the old oak tree. Lily marked each turn in her notebook with her pencil. 7

The tracks crossed the square and went down a narrow lane. Lily stopped to look at every stone. She noticed a small thread caught on a bush. It was brown and thick, like wool. She put it carefully in her satchel. "Someone in a brown wool coat came this way," she said. Pip sniffed the bush and sneezed. "Bless you," said Lily, laughing. 8

The sun climbed higher, and Lily's tummy rumbled. Still, she kept following the tracks. Some children ran past and asked, "Did you find the bell yet?" Lily shook her head. "Not yet," she said. "But I am getting closer. Good detective work takes patience." Pip sat down and sighed, but he stayed beside her. 9

Near the edge of the village, the tracks grew fainter. Lily got down on her knees and studied them with her magnifying glass. "They are heading toward the old repair shop," she said. Her hazel eyes sparkled. The old shop stood at the end of the lane, with a crooked roof and a big wooden door. A sign above it said, in faded letters, REPAIRS. 10

Lily pushed open the wooden door. Inside the shop, it was warm and smelled of oil and wood. There, in the middle of the room, hung the village bell! A tall old man with a white moustache and round spectacles turned around. It was Grandpa Elias, the bell keeper. "Well, well," he said kindly. "You found me." 11

Lily pointed at the bell. "You took it?" she asked. Grandpa Elias smiled and smoothed his green wool cardigan. "The bell had a crack," he said. "I moved it here to repair it. I did not want to frighten anyone, but I should have told the village." He showed Lily the tiny crack and the tools on his workbench. 12

Pip ran to the bell and sniffed it happily. Lily looked at Grandpa Elias. "So the bell was not stolen?" she asked. "No," he said. "It has been here all along, getting fixed." Lily wrote everything in her notebook. "A good detective finds the truth," she said. "And the truth is kind." Grandpa Elias chuckled and patted her shoulder. 13

Grandpa Elias finished the repair that very afternoon. He tightened the last screw and tapped the bell gently. It made a soft, clear sound. "It is ready," he said. "Let us take it back to the tower." Lily helped him push the cart, and Pip trotted along beside them. When they reached the square, the whole village came out to watch. 14

That evening, the bell rang out across Willowbrook Village. Ding-dong! Ding-dong! Everyone cheered. The baker clapped, and the farmer waved his hat. "Our bell is back!" they cried. Grandpa Elias told everyone what had happened, and they thanked him for his careful repair. Lily stood tall in her yellow raincoat, feeling proud.
