He notices the air is unusually dry and recalls that rainbows need sunlight and tiny water droplets. With the help of Mrs. Pearl, the festival organizer, Theo tests his idea by creating a miniature rainbow with a watering can and sunlight. He then explains to the townspeople that a gentle rain is needed to fill the air with droplets. When a soft rain falls and the sun returns, a beautiful rainbow appears, saving the festival. This charming story introduces young readers to the science behind rainbows while emphasizing curiosity, observation, and community. The Missing Rainbow Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

In the cheerful town of Willowdale, everyone was getting ready for the spring festival. Banners of flowers hung between the houses, and tables were piled high with sweet cakes. Theo, a small boy with messy black hair and round glasses, hurried along the street with his magnifying glass in hand. His bluebird friend Pip fluttered beside him, carrying a tiny leaf in his beak. 1

Mrs. Pearl, the festival organizer, stood in the town square with her watering can. She had warm tan skin, silver-grey hair in a neat bun, and kind hazel eyes. 'Theo,' she said with a smile, 'tomorrow is the big day. The rainbow always appears over the hill to start our festival.' Theo looked up at the sky, his large dark brown eyes sparkling with curiosity. 'I can't wait to see it!' he said. 2

But the next morning, the sky was pale and empty. No rainbow stretched over the hill. The townspeople gasped and whispered. Mrs. Pearl frowned gently. 'The rainbow has never missed our festival,' she said. Theo adjusted his glasses and felt a flutter of determination. 'I'm a scientist,' he said. 'I will find out why it's missing.' Pip chirped loudly, as if to say, 'Me too!' 3

Theo opened his small brown satchel and pulled out his notebook. He climbed the hill with Pip flying ahead. The grass was dry and crackly under his red sneakers. 'If I were a rainbow, where would I hide?' he wondered. He looked at the sun, which was shining brightly. Then he looked at the sky, which had no clouds at all. 'Something is not right,' he said. 4

Pip landed on a dry leaf and pecked at it. Theo noticed how brittle and brown it was. 'The air feels very dry,' he said, touching his own cheek. He remembered reading that rainbows need water. But the sky was clear. He took out his magnifying glass and looked closely at the air, but he couldn't see any droplets. 'Maybe the droplets are too small to see,' he thought. 5

Theo hurried to Mrs. Pearl's garden, where she was watering her flowers. 'Mrs. Pearl,' he said, 'I think the rainbow is missing because the air is too dry. Rainbows need sunlight and tiny water droplets. But there are not enough droplets in the air.' Mrs. Pearl nodded thoughtfully. 'That makes sense, Theo. We've had very little rain this spring. How can we test your idea?' 6

Theo thought for a moment. 'We could make our own rainbow,' he said. Mrs. Pearl smiled and picked up her watering can. 'Let's try,' she said. She sprayed a fine mist into the air while Theo held his magnifying glass up to the sunlight. For a moment, a tiny rainbow appeared in the mist! 'Look!' Theo shouted. 'It works! The sunlight and droplets make colors!' 7

Pip chirped excitedly and flew through the tiny rainbow. Mrs. Pearl laughed. 'You've discovered the secret, Theo! But we need a big rainbow for the festival. We need lots of droplets in the air.' Theo looked at the sky. 'We need rain,' he said. 'A gentle spring rain would fill the air with droplets.' Mrs. Pearl nodded. 'I think you're right.' 8

Theo and Mrs. Pearl went to the town square, where everyone was waiting. Theo stood on a small crate so everyone could see him. 'I know why the rainbow is missing,' he announced. 'The air is too dry. Rainbows need sunlight and tiny water droplets. When sunlight shines through the droplets, it splits into colors. But there are not enough droplets now.' 9

The townspeople listened carefully. 'So what can we do?' asked a baker. Theo smiled. 'We need rain. A gentle spring rain will fill the air with droplets. Then the sun will shine through and make a rainbow.' Mrs. Pearl added, 'Let's all hope for a little rain. In the meantime, we can prepare for the festival.' Everyone nodded and went back to work. 10

That afternoon, clouds gathered in the sky. A soft, gentle rain began to fall. Theo and Pip stood under a tree and watched the drops. 'This is perfect!' Theo said. 'The air is filling with droplets.' Pip shook his feathers and chirped happily. The rain was light and warm, and it made the flowers sparkle. Mrs. Pearl came out with her watering can and smiled. 'Your wish came true, Theo.' 11

After a while, the rain stopped. The clouds moved away, and the sun peeked out. Theo looked up. 'Now we need to wait,' he said. 'The sunlight will shine through the droplets.' Everyone gathered in the square, looking at the sky. Suddenly, a band of colors appeared over the hill. 'The rainbow!' shouted the children. It grew brighter and brighter, arching across the sky. 12

The festival began with cheers and laughter. Mrs. Pearl gave Theo a big hug. 'You solved the mystery, Theo,' she said. 'Your curiosity and understanding of nature saved our festival.' Theo blushed, his freckles standing out on his nose. 'I just watched and learned,' he said. Pip landed on his shoulder and chirped proudly. The rainbow shone above them, bright and beautiful. 13

All day long, people celebrated under the rainbow. They played games, ate sweet cakes, and danced to music. Theo walked around with his magnifying glass, explaining to anyone who asked how rainbows are made. 'Sunlight and water droplets work together,' he said. 'It's like magic, but it's science!' The children listened with wide eyes, amazed by his discovery.
