🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:31

Bruno is a huge, gentle monster who lives in a cozy cave at the edge of a sunny meadow, tending his flowers and loving every living thing. One cool morning he finds a tiny mouse with a bandaged leg lying in the grass near his door. He names the mouse Pip and carries him inside, determined to nurse him back to health. But caring for such a small creature is harder than Bruno expects: his thick fingers fumble with a matchbox bed and a thimble chair, his hand shakes and spills Pip's tiny meals, and his big feet make the floor tremble. Day by day, Bruno practices being gentle, learning to hold Pip without squeezing, to walk softly, and to make a little table from a twig and a chair from an acorn cap.

As Pip grows stronger, he explores the cave, rides in Bruno's apron pocket, and wears a tiny red scarf Bruno knitted for him. Bruno builds him a playground of twigs and leaves, yet his happiness is tinged with sadness, because he knows Pip is a wild mouse who will one day need to roam. When Pip's leg finally heals and he gazes out at the meadow with longing, Bruno faces a difficult choice between keeping his little friend safe and setting him free.

This gentle children's tale explores kindness, patience, and the meaning of true care. Young readers learn that looking after someone takes practice and effort, and that loving someone can mean doing what is best for them, even when it hurts. The story is suited to young children and to parents and teachers looking for a warm read-aloud about empathy, responsibility, and letting go.

Bruno was a monster, but not a scary one. He lived in a cozy cave at the edge of a sunny meadow. Every morning, he watered his flowers and hummed a happy tune. His mossgreen fur was soft as clover, and his amber eyes twinkled like warm honey. Bruno was huge, with a round belly and thick, gentle hands. He loved all living things, from buzzing bees to wiggly worms. 1

One cool morning, Bruno heard a tiny squeak near his cave door. He looked down and gasped. There, in the grass, lay a little mouse with grey-brown fur and a bandaged leg. The mouse's dark eyes were wide and bright. "Oh, you poor thing!" Bruno whispered. "You're hurt. Don't worry, I'll help you." Very carefully, he scooped the mouse into his palm. 2

Bruno carried the mouse inside and set him on a soft cloth. "I'll call you Pip," he said. Pip twitched his whiskers and looked around. Bruno brought a drop of water on his fingertip. Pip drank and his tiny pink tail wiggled. "You need rest and care," Bruno said. But when he tried to pet Pip, his huge hand bumped the cloth. Pip squeaked in surprise. Bruno sighed. "My hands are too big!" 3

Bruno wanted to make Pip comfortable. He found a matchbox for a bed and a thimble for a chair. But his thick fingers fumbled, and the little chair tipped over. "Oops!" Bruno muttered. He tried again, slower this time. He placed a cotton ball inside the matchbox for a mattress. Pip watched with curious eyes. "There," Bruno said softly. "A tiny bed for a tiny mouse." 4

Next, Bruno thought about food. Pip needed tiny meals. Bruno mashed a seed into a paste and served it on a leaf. He cut a berry into minuscule pieces. But when he set the plate down, his hand shook and the food spilled. Pip looked at the mess and then at Bruno. "Don't worry," Bruno said. "I'll get it right." He tried again, moving very slowly, and this time the little meal stayed put. 5

Bruno practiced being gentle every day. He learned to hold Pip without squeezing. He learned to walk softly so his big feet didn't shake the floor. He made Pip a tiny table from a twig and a chair from an acorn cap. Pip's bandage needed changing, so Bruno used a leaf as a bandage and tied it with a blade of grass. "You're a good nurse," Pip squeaked. Bruno's amber eyes glowed with pride. 6

Pip grew stronger. He explored Bruno's cave, climbing over pebbles and hiding in Bruno's apron pocket. Bruno laughed, a deep rumbling sound. "You're a brave little explorer!" he said. Pip especially loved the tiny red scarf Bruno knitted from a thread. "For you," Bruno said, tying it around Pip's neck. Pip did a happy dance, and Bruno clapped his huge hands softly. 7

One day, Bruno took Pip outside for fresh air. Pip sniffed the grass and wiggled his ears. "It's a big world," Bruno said. Pip looked at the meadow and then back at Bruno. Bruno felt a little tug in his heart. He knew Pip was getting better. But he also knew that Pip was a wild mouse, and wild mice need to roam. Still, Bruno pushed the thought away. "Not yet," he whispered. 8

Bruno built Pip a tiny playground with twigs and leaves. He made a swing from a spider's thread. Pip swung back and forth, squeaking with joy. Bruno watched and smiled, but his smile was a little sad. "You like it here, don't you?" Bruno asked. Pip nodded and nuzzled Bruno's finger. Bruno's heart felt warm, but he knew that soon he would have to make a choice. 9

Pip's leg was almost healed. The bandage came off, and Pip ran in circles. Bruno cheered. But then Pip stopped at the cave entrance and looked out at the meadow. His little nose twitched. Bruno saw the longing in Pip's shiny eyes. "You want to go, don't you?" Bruno said softly. Pip looked back with a question in his eyes. Bruno's big heart ached. 10

Bruno sat down and thought hard. He loved Pip and wanted to keep him safe. But he remembered how much he loved exploring the meadow himself. "Caring for someone means doing what's best for them," Bruno said to himself. He looked at Pip, who was watching a butterfly. Bruno made a decision. He would give Pip the freedom to explore, just as he would want for himself. 11

Bruno picked up Pip gently and carried him to the cave entrance. "You're all better now, little friend," he said. "The meadow is yours to explore." Pip looked up, confused. Bruno smiled, though his eyes were misty. "Go on," he said. "I'll be here if you need me." Pip hesitated, then hugged Bruno's thumb. Then he scampered into the grass, his tiny red scarf fluttering. 12

Bruno watched Pip disappear into the tall grass. His cave felt very quiet. He missed the little squeaks and the patter of tiny feet. But then he heard a rustle. Pip popped up on a rock, waving his tiny paw. Bruno waved back. "You're free!" Bruno called. Pip squeaked happily and ran off to explore. Bruno felt a warm glow. He had done the right thing.
