A Chapter from the Book

The Pumpkin with a Plan Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

In the heart of the autumn woods, where leaves turned gold and red, lived Pumpkin Pete. He had a round orange body with deep ridges, a curly green stem, and warm amber eyes that sparkled with ideas. Pete loved to plan. He carried a tiny brown clipboard everywhere and wrote lists on it with a little pencil. Today, he was planning the Harvest Festival, and he wanted it to be perfect. 1

Pete sat at a wooden table outside his pumpkin house. His red knitted scarf kept him cozy as he wrote. 'First, decorations at sunrise. Then games at noon. Then the feast at three,' he said, tapping his pencil. His clipboard was full of schedules, each minute planned. 'A perfect plan makes a perfect festival,' Pete declared. He smiled his carved smile and got to work. 2

Pete hung bright paper lanterns and strung colorful leaves across the trees. He set up ring-toss games and a applebobbing station. His friend Hazel the Hedgehog watched, her blue mittens folded. 'Pete, this looks wonderful!' she said. Pete nodded proudly. 'And everything is on schedule,' he said. 'Nothing can go wrong when you plan well.' Hazel smiled, but she wasn't so sure. 3

The next morning, Pete woke to a gray sky. Big raindrops splashed on his rooftop. 'Oh no!' he cried, grabbing his clipboard. 'Rain is not on the schedule!' He ran outside, but the paper lanterns drooped and the games got soggy. His perfect plans were getting wet. Pete's carved smile turned into a frown. He didn't know what to do. 4

Hazel hurried over, her spiky quills dotted with raindrops. 'Pete, the rain won't stop soon,' she said gently. 'Maybe we can move the festival into Barnaby's barn?' Pete shook his head. 'No! The festival must be outside, like my plan says.' He hugged his clipboard tightly. 'If we change the plan, it won't be perfect.' Hazel sighed and went to find help. 5

Hazel found Barnaby the Barn Owl in his cozy barn. Barnaby wore round green spectacles and a long striped scarf. 'Pete won't change his plans,' Hazel said. Barnaby blinked his huge golden eyes. 'I have plenty of room in my barn,' he said calmly. 'Let's go talk to Pete.' They walked together through the rain, Barnaby's broad wings keeping them dry. 6

At Pete's house, Barnaby spoke in his wise, soft voice. 'Pete, a festival is about friends, not just plans. My barn is dry and warm. We can still have fun.' Pete crossed his stubby arms. 'But my schedule says outside games!' Just then, Maple the Squirrel scampered up, her bushy tail dripping. 'I have new game ideas!' she chirped, holding her yellow satchel. 'We can play them inside!' 7

Pete looked at his clipboard, then at his friends' hopeful faces. 'But... my perfect plan,' he whispered. Hazel put a blue mitten on his arm. 'Pete, we can make a new plan together. The festival will still be wonderful.' Pete's amber eyes softened. He took a deep breath. 'Okay,' he said slowly. 'Let's try it your way.' His friends cheered. 8

Everyone rushed to Barnaby's barn. It was big and dry, with soft hay on the floor. Pete looked around and felt a tiny spark of excitement. 'We can hang lanterns from the beams,' he said, pointing. Hazel nodded. 'And set up games in the corners.' Maple was already pulling out her game ideas. 'Let's make it cozy and fun!' she said. Pete smiled, just a little. 9

Maple invented a game called 'Pumpkin Roll,' where they rolled little gourds into a basket. Hazel set up a 'Leaf Toss' with colorful leaves. Barnaby hung lanterns high with his beak. Pete watched his friends work together. He felt something warm inside his pumpkin heart. 'This is fun,' he admitted. 'Even without the schedule.' He picked up a gourd and rolled it with a laugh. 10

The rain kept falling, but inside the barn, the festival was full of joy. Animals came from all over the woods, shaking off raindrops and laughing. Pete looked at his clipboard and realized he hadn't checked it all afternoon. 'I was so worried about the plan,' he said to Hazel. 'But the best part is being here with all of you.' Hazel hugged him with her soft quills. 11

Barnaby called everyone together. 'Let's thank Pete for his hard work,' he said. 'And for being flexible!' Pete blushed orange. 'I couldn't have done it without you,' he said. 'My plan was perfect on paper, but you made it perfect in real life.' The animals cheered and clapped. Pete felt happier than he ever had with any schedule. 12

The festival went on with laughter and games. Maple taught everyone a dance called the 'Rainy Shuffle.' Hazel served warm apple cider. Barnaby told stories by lantern light. Pete led a game of 'Pin the Stem on the Pumpkin,' and everyone giggled. The rain outside didn't matter at all. Inside, there was warmth, friendship, and lots of happiness. 13

As the festival ended, Pete stood by the barn door. The rain had stopped, and a rainbow stretched across the sky. 'I learned something today,' Pete said to his friends. 'A perfect plan can't make people happy. But working together and caring about each other can.' Hazel smiled. 'That's the best plan of all.' Pete nodded and put his clipboard away, maybe for good.
