A Chapter from the Book

The Sapphire Reef Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Coral was a small fish with shimmering turquoise scales and a pale silver belly. She loved to explore the wide ocean, and she always carried a woven seagrass satchel in soft green. One day, while swimming near a quiet coral wall, she saw a strange blue light flickering in the distance. Her round amber eyes grew wide with wonder. "What could that be?" she whispered to herself. 1

Coral swam closer and found a reef covered in tiny glowing creatures. They shone bright blue, like a thousand sapphires under the sea. But the glow was not always there. An old sea turtle named Finn, with a moss-green shell and a string of seaglass beads, told her the reef only glowed at certain tides. "It is a rare and special place," he said. "I have watched over it for many years." 2

Coral was curious and gentle, and she wanted to learn everything about the Sapphire Reef. Finn taught her how the tides came and went, and how the glow appeared only when the water was just right. Coral swam through the blue light, her turquoise scales sparkling. She felt like she was swimming through a sky full of stars. "I will help protect this place," she promised. 3

Word spread across the ocean about the beautiful glowing reef. Soon, visitors began to arrive. First came a few curious fish, then a school of silvery sardines, then a pod of dolphins. They all wanted to see the sapphire glow. Coral was happy to share the wonder, but she noticed the reef was getting crowded. Some visitors swam too close to the delicate coral, and their fins stirred up the sand. 4

Pip, a tiny seahorse with a bright coral-pink body and a tiny reed hat, was the first to spot the crowds. He zipped through the water, his little dorsal fin fluttering quickly. "Coral! Coral!" he called. "There are so many visitors coming! They are bumping into the coral and stirring up the sand!" Coral looked around and saw that Pip was right. The reef was busier than ever, and the glow seemed a little dimmer. 5

Coral felt worried. She did not want the visitors to harm the reef, but she also did not want to turn them away. She swam to find Finn, who was resting near a tall brain coral. "Finn," she said, "the visitors love the glow, but they are hurting the reef. What can we do?" Finn thought for a moment, his warm brown eyes gentle. "We need to find a way for everyone to enjoy the reef without touching it," he said. 6

Just then, a huge shadow passed overhead. It was Marla, a manta ray with a deep indigo back and pale silver spots. She had come to see the famous Sapphire Reef. Marla was calm and observant, and she noticed the problem right away. "I have seen many reefs in my travels," she said. "The ones that stay beautiful are the ones where visitors follow safe pathways." 7

Coral's amber eyes lit up. "Safe pathways!" she exclaimed. "We can make paths through the reef where visitors can swim without touching the coral!" Finn nodded slowly. "That could work," he said. "We can mark the paths with small stones and sea grass." Pip twirled his curling tail excitedly. "I can help! I am small and fast, so I can guide the visitors along the paths!" 8

Coral opened her seagrass satchel and took out a small piece of charcoal. She began to draw a map of the reef on a flat rock. She marked the places where the coral was most delicate and the spots where the glow was brightest. Finn pointed out the safest routes with his flipper. Marla glided above, using her broad wings to show where the paths should go. Together, they planned pathways that would let visitors see the glow up close but keep the coral safe. 9

The next day, they set to work. Coral and Pip gathered small white stones and arranged them in lines along the seabed. Finn used his strong flippers to gently push sand aside, making clear paths. Marla used her long tail to sweep away any loose seaweed. They worked together all morning, and by afternoon, the pathways were ready. The reef looked tidy, and the coral was no longer in danger of being bumped. 10

When the tide came in that evening, the reef began to glow. The blue light shimmered and danced, and the visitors arrived. Pip darted ahead, his pink body bright against the blue. "This way, please!" he called. "Follow the white stones!" Marla glided slowly above, her silver spots catching the light. "Please stay on the paths," she said in her calm voice. "The reef is fragile, and we want it to shine for years to come." 11

The visitors listened. They swam along the marked pathways, oohing and aahing at the glowing reef. Some fish tried to swim over the coral, but Pip gently reminded them to stay on the path. The visitors were happy to follow the rules because they could see how beautiful the reef was. Coral watched from above, her turquoise scales shimmering. She felt proud of what they had done. The reef glowed brightly, and the coral was safe. 12

Finn swam up beside Coral. "You did a wonderful thing," he said. "You found a way to share the reef without harming it." Coral smiled. "We all did it together," she said. "And now the reef will keep shining." Pip did a little loop in the water. "And the visitors will keep coming back!" he cheered. Marla nodded.
