Lucy lives in a village where the streets curl like ribbons and gardens bloom on every corner. One morning, her clock blinks 9:09, and soon she notices nines everywhere: a sign saying 'Library: 9 steps,' a fallen leaf with nine points, and more. She starts recording each one in her green notebook, whispering, 'Something is going on.' At school, she shares her findings with her friend Sam, and together they decide to investigate.

After school, Lucy and Sam visit Mira, who wears a magnifying glass like a necklace. Mira suggests that numbers can form patterns and proposes they find nine clues to see where they lead. The three friends search the village, discovering nines on a mailbox, a bus stop, a bench, and a drainpipe. Their search leads them to the old library, where Mr. Oakley, the librarian, reveals that the number nine was special to the town's founder, who left a puzzle: nine clues lead to a hidden place. Equipped with an old map showing nine numbered spots, the friends embark on a treasure hunt, solving riddles and following clues that take them to the clock tower, the bakery, the village well, and beyond.

As they solve each clue, they learn about teamwork, perseverance, and the joy of discovery. The story celebrates curiosity and community, showing how working together can uncover hidden treasures and bring people closer. Young readers will enjoy the mystery and the charming village setting, while also learning about patterns, problem-solving, and the importance of sharing and caring for communal spaces.

The Secret of Number Nine Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Lucy lived in a village where the streets curled like ribbons and gardens bloomed on every corner. One morning, her clock blinked 9:09. On the way to school, a sign said 'Library: 9 steps.' Even a fallen leaf had nine points. Lucy pulled out her green notebook and wrote each one down. 'Something is going on,' she whispered. 1

At school, Lucy showed her notebook to Sam. He grinned, his gap-toothed smile wide. 'Nine again?' he asked. In class, the page number was nine. At lunch, nine birds sat on the fence. Sam counted them twice. Lucy wrote it all down, her curly hair bouncing as she nodded. 'This is a mystery,' she said. 2

After school, Lucy and Sam visited Mira, who wore her magnifying glass like a necklace. Mira studied the notebook through her round glasses. 'Numbers can be patterns,' she said. 'If we find nine clues, maybe they lead somewhere.' Lucy's hazel eyes sparkled. 'Then let's look for more nines!' They decided to meet the next morning. 3

The next day, the three friends searched the village. They found a nine on a mailbox, a nine on a bus stop, and a nine carved into a bench. Each time, Lucy wrote it down. Sam carried his orange backpack full of snacks. 'Nine clues,' he said. 'We have six already.' Mira spotted a tiny nine on a drainpipe. 'Seven!' she cheered. 4

Their search led them to the old library. Mr. Oakley, the librarian, had a white moustache and kind grey eyes. He noticed Lucy's notebook. 'The number nine,' he said, 'was special to our town's founder.' He pulled an old map from a drawer. 'She left a puzzle. Nine clues lead to a hidden place.' The friends leaned in close. 5

Mr. Oakley gave them the map. It showed the village with nine numbered spots. 'Start at the clock tower,' he said. 'But you must solve each clue to find the next.' Lucy's pencil flew as she copied the map. Sam held the ladder while Mira read the tiny numbers. 'This is like a treasure hunt,' Sam said, his cowlick bouncing with excitement. 6

At the clock tower, they found a riddle: 'I have hands but cannot clap. I tell you when to wake and nap.' Mira adjusted her glasses. 'A clock!' she said. They looked at the clock's face. Under the number nine was a small key. Lucy wrote it down. 'Eight more clues,' she said. They hurried to the next spot on the map. 7

The second clue was at the bakery. 'I rise but never sleep,' it read. Sam laughed. 'Bread rises!' Inside, the baker gave them a note with a nine on it. The note said, 'Look where flowers drink.' Mira's eyes lit up. 'A watering can!' They found one behind the shop, with a nine scratched on the bottom. 8

The third clue led to the village well. 'I hold water but have no hands,' Mira read. 'A bucket!' They pulled up the bucket and found a small stone with a nine painted on it. Lucy added it to her notebook. Sam shared his snacks, and they sat on the well's edge, thinking. 'Six clues left,' Lucy said, munching an apple. 9

The fourth and fifth clues were easy. A nine on the school bell, and a nine on the garden gate. The sixth clue was a riddle about a 'home for books.' They raced to the library. Mr. Oakley smiled and pointed to a shelf. Behind a book, they found a note with a nine and a drawing of a rose. 'The garden!' Mira gasped. 10

The seventh clue was a real rose in the village square. Its tag said 'Nine petals.' They counted—nine petals exactly. The eighth clue was under a loose stone in the path. It read, 'The last clue is where the founder's statue looks.' They looked up. The statue's finger pointed toward the old oak tree. 'One more clue!' Sam shouted. 11

Under the oak tree, they found a small wooden box with a nine on the lid. Inside was a puzzle: nine sliding squares, each with a letter. 'It's a word puzzle!' Mira said. She slid the squares back and forth, her braids swinging. 'G-A-R-D-E-N,' she spelled. 'Garden!' The box clicked open. A map to a hidden garden appeared. 12

The map led to a forgotten corner of the village, behind a tangle of vines. Lucy pushed through and gasped. A rusty gate with a nine on it opened into a garden full of weeds and wildflowers. 'It's been here all along,' Sam whispered. Mira spotted a stone plaque: 'Community Garden, founded on the ninth day.' 'We found it!' Lucy cheered. 13

Mr. Oakley arrived, leaning on his walking stick. 'You solved the founder's puzzle,' he said. 'She wanted the garden to be shared. It just needs some care.' The friends looked at each other. 'We can fix it!' Sam said. Lucy wrote a plan in her notebook. Mira read the founder's old gardening book. They got to work that very afternoon. 14

All week, the friends weeded, watered, and planted. Neighbors joined in, bringing tools and seeds. Lucy kept track of everything with nines—nine rows of carrots, nine sunflowers, nine tomato plants. Sam carried buckets and cheered everyone on. Mira made a sign: 'Number Nine Garden.' The village buzzed with excitement. The garden was coming back to life.
