Emma lives in a small village at the edge of a wide, quiet hill, in a house with a red door and a garden full of daisies. Every evening she sits on the porch with her grandpa, Joe, who tells her stories about falling stars that twinkle like tiny lanterns. One breezy night, wearing her yellow raincoat and blue rubber boots and carrying her sky-blue umbrella with silver stars, Emma climbs the hill with her orange cat Pip and catches a piece of starlight as it drifts down from the sky. Night after night she gathers more, until her umbrella glows like a nightlight beside her bed. When Grandpa Joe tells her that starlight shines brightest when shared, Emma is not sure what he means; she likes keeping the warm light close.

Then a storm rolls over the village and the power goes out, leaving every house dark and every neighbor worried. Remembering her grandpa's words, Emma puts on her raincoat and boots, takes Pip and her glowing umbrella, and steps out into the night. In the village square she opens the umbrella wide and lets the golden light spill over the houses and trees, and the whole village begins to glow. When the starlight starts to fade, she and the villagers hold up their own umbrellas and bowls to catch new light from the sky, and they share it with one another.

The story follows Emma, Grandpa Joe, Pip and the villagers through one single night of darkness and light. It is a gentle tale for young children about generosity: that a gift kept to yourself stays small, while light shared with others grows brighter rather than shrinking. Its warm, simple scenes make it well suited to reading aloud at bedtime.

The Starlight Umbrella Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Emma lived in a little village at the edge of a wide, quiet hill. Her house had a red door and a garden full of daisies. Every evening, Emma sat on the porch with her grandpa, watching the sky turn pink and purple. Grandpa Joe told her stories about falling stars that twinkled like tiny lanterns. Emma listened with her big hazel eyes wide open, dreaming of catching one. 1

One breezy night, Emma put on her yellow raincoat and blue rubber boots. She carried her sky-blue umbrella with silver stars. Pip, her small orange cat, followed close behind, his red ribbon collar jingling. They walked up the hill to watch the stars. Suddenly, a soft light drifted down from the sky. Emma held out her umbrella, and the starlight landed gently inside. 2

The starlight glowed warm and golden inside the umbrella. Emma peeked in and gasped. "It's like a tiny sun!" she whispered. Pip purred and rubbed against her boots. Every night after that, Emma walked up the hill and caught more falling starlight. Soon her umbrella was full of soft, sparkling light. She kept it safe by her bed, and it glowed like a nightlight. 3

Emma showed Grandpa Joe her glowing umbrella. He smiled, his round glasses twinkling. "Starlight is a special gift," he said. "It shines brightest when shared." Emma nodded, but she wasn't sure what he meant. She liked keeping the light close. It made her room cozy and warm. Pip curled up beside the umbrella, his green eyes reflecting the gentle glow. 4

One night, a storm rolled over the village. Thunder rumbled and rain poured down. Suddenly, the lights in every house went out. The whole village turned dark and quiet. Emma looked out her window. She could hear her neighbors whispering in the street. "What happened?" asked a little boy. "The power is out," said his mother. Everyone sounded worried. 5

Emma's heart beat fast. She held her umbrella tight. The starlight inside pulsed softly, as if it wanted to come out. Pip meowed and pawed at the door. Emma thought of Grandpa Joe's words: "Starlight shines brightest when shared." She took a deep breath. Then she put on her yellow raincoat and blue boots. She opened the door and stepped into the dark, rainy night. 6

Emma walked down the street with Pip at her heels. The rain had stopped, but the village was still dark. She held her umbrella high. The starlight glowed through the silver stars. One by one, people came out of their houses. They wore pyjamas and nightgowns, shawls and slippers. They pointed at the glowing umbrella. "Look!" cried a girl. "It's so pretty!" 7

Emma reached the village square. Everyone gathered around her. "I have starlight," she said softly. "I can share it." She opened her umbrella wide. A warm, golden light spilled out. It floated over the houses and trees. The whole village began to glow. The dark street became bright and cozy. People gasped and smiled. "It's like magic!" whispered a boy. 8

Grandpa Joe came with his wooden walking stick. He stood beside Emma and smiled. "You see?" he said. "Gifts are best when shared." Emma nodded. She felt warm inside, warmer than the starlight. The villagers clapped and cheered. Pip danced around her boots, his bell jingling. Emma twirled her umbrella, and the light swirled like tiny stars. Everyone laughed with delight. 9

The starlight spread to every corner of the village. It glowed on the bakery, the school, and the little library. People opened their doors and windows. Children ran out in their slippers. They danced and skipped in the gentle light. Emma's friend Lila brought her a warm blanket. "You saved us!" she said. Emma smiled her gap-toothed smile. "We saved each other," she replied. 10

But then the starlight began to fade. Emma's umbrella grew dim. The villagers looked worried. "What will we do?" asked a little girl. Emma looked at Grandpa Joe. He winked. "Starlight is always in the sky," he said. "We just need to catch it together." Emma had an idea. She asked everyone to bring their umbrellas and bowls. They held them up to the sky. 11

As if by magic, new starlight drifted down. It landed in every umbrella and bowl. The villagers laughed and cheered. They shared the light with one another. Some gave their starlight to neighbors who had none. Soon the whole village glowed brighter than before. Emma's heart swelled with joy. She saw that sharing made the light grow, not shrink. Pip purred loudly. 12

That night, the village had a starlight party. Everyone danced in the square. Grandpa Joe played his old fiddle. Pip chased sparkles of light. Emma twirled her umbrella, and the stars swirled around her. The baker brought warm bread, and the children sang songs. The village glowed with kindness and joy. Emma felt proud and happy. She knew she would never forget this night. 13

The next morning, the power came back. But the village felt different. People smiled more and helped one another. Emma kept her umbrella by the door. It still glowed softly. She knew the starlight would always be there, ready to share. Pip sat on the windowsill, watching the sky. Grandpa Joe patted Emma's head. "You have a kind heart," he said. "Keep sharing." 14
