Explorer Nova lands her small silver ship on an unfamiliar world of deep purple hills and rolling pink fields, where the ground feels as soft as a blanket. Delighted by the strange beauty around her, she jumps and runs in her bright orange space suit, not noticing that the velvet moss beneath her boots sighs and bruises with every heavy step. A shy mint-green creature named Moss, keeper of the planet, steps out from behind a pink bush and gently asks her to walk softly, because the ground is alive and feels everything.

Moss teaches Nova that the planet is sensitive: it dims when someone is rough and glows when someone is gentle. Nova finds that slowing down is harder than she expected, and when her quick steps turn the moss dull gray, she learns to apologize and to try again. Moss shows her how to tiptoe, how to enjoy pink singing flowers without picking them, and how to sing to a torn, gray patch of moss so that new velvet can grow back.

This gentle children's tale is suited to young readers and to adults reading aloud with them. Through Nova's visit it explores care, respect for living things, and the idea that small choices, like a soft step or a simple song, can help heal what has been hurt. It closes with Nova leaving the planet glowing warm and purple, carrying a promise to return and to walk softly.

A Chapter from the Book

The Velvet Planet Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Explorer Nova's small silver ship landed with a soft thump on a world she had never seen. The hills were deep purple and looked as soft as a blanket. Pink fields rolled gently under a sky full of twinkling stars. Nova's dark brown eyes grew wide with wonder. She couldn't wait to explore this strange, beautiful place. 1

Nova stepped out in her bright orange space suit, yellow stripes shining. Her clear bubble helmet kept her safe. The ground felt squishy under her silver boots. She took a big jump and laughed. "This is the softest planet ever!" she shouted. But when she landed, the purple moss beneath her feet let out a tiny, sad sigh. 2

Nova didn't notice the sigh. She ran up a purple hill, her short curly black hair bouncing inside her helmet. The hill seemed to ripple and bruise where she stepped. Little puffs of velvet moss floated in the air. "Wait!" called a small voice from behind a pink bush. Nova stopped and turned around. Who was there? 3

A little creature peeked out. It was about the size of a cat, with a fuzzy mint-green body and huge round amber eyes. Tiny leafshaped ears twitched on its head, and glowing freckles sparkled on its cheeks. It wore a small woven grass collar. "Please walk softly," it said in a shy, gentle voice. "The ground is alive." 4

"I'm Moss," the creature said. "I take care of this velvet planet." Nova looked down at the moss beneath her boots. It looked like a soft carpet, but now she saw tiny, gentle pulses, like breathing. "I didn't know," Nova whispered. "I was just so excited to jump and run." Moss nodded. "It's okay. But the planet feels every step." 5

Moss led Nova to a shimmering silver stream. "Watch," Moss said. The stream flowed and sparkled, but when Nova accidentally kicked a pebble into it, the water flickered and dimmed. "The planet is sensitive," Moss explained. "It bruises when we are rough, and it glows when we are gentle." Nova felt a little pang of guilt in her chest. 6

Nova wanted to be gentle, but it was hard to slow down. Her feet wanted to run. Her hands wanted to touch everything. She took a few quick steps, and the ground beneath her turned a dull gray. Moss's glowing freckles dimmed too. "Oh no!" Nova gasped. "Did I hurt it?" Moss looked worried. "It will heal, but we must be careful." 7

Nova sat down slowly, feeling the soft moss beneath her. She took a deep breath. "I'm sorry," she said to the planet. She didn't know if it could hear her, but she meant it. Moss sat beside her, and the two of them were quiet. Slowly, the ground beneath them began to glow again, a soft, warm light. 8

Moss showed Nova how to walk with soft steps. "Like this," Moss said, tiptoeing on four stubby legs. Nova copied, placing her silver boots down gently. The moss didn't bruise. Instead, it seemed to smile. "You're doing it!" Moss cheered. Nova felt proud. She walked slowly, and the planet glowed brighter with every step. 9

They came to a field of pink flowers that hummed a quiet song. Nova wanted to pick one, but Moss shook its head. "We can enjoy them without taking them," Moss said. Nova nodded and simply looked. The flowers seemed to sing louder, as if thanking her. Nova's round face broke into a big smile. "This is better than running," she said. 10

Nova and Moss walked on, side by side. Nova's steps were gentle now, and the planet responded with soft, happy colors. Suddenly, Nova saw a place where the velvet moss was torn and gray. "What happened here?" she asked. Moss sighed. "A long time ago, someone was not gentle. It still hurts." Nova's eyes filled with concern. 11

"Can we help it?" Nova asked. Moss nodded. "We can sing to it. The planet loves songs." Nova didn't know any planet songs, but she sang a simple tune her mother used to sing. Moss hummed along. As they sang, the gray moss began to turn purple again. New velvet grew, soft and bright. The planet was healing. 12

Nova felt a warm glow inside. "I'm glad I learned to be gentle," she said. Moss's amber eyes sparkled. "The planet is glad too. It will remember your kindness." They sat together on a breathing slope, watching the silver streams shimmer. Nova's small scar on her eyebrow crinkled as she smiled. She felt like she had made a true friend. 13

It was time for Nova to go home. She hugged Moss gently. "I'll come back," she promised. "And I'll walk softly." Moss gave her a tiny wave. Nova climbed into her ship and waved goodbye. As she flew away, she saw the whole velvet planet glowing a warm, happy purple. It was the most beautiful sight she had ever seen. 14

Back on her ship, Nova wrote in her log. "Today I learned that new worlds are alive. They feel our footsteps. We must treat them with respect." She touched the star patch on her backpack and smiled. She couldn't wait to tell everyone about the velvet planet and her friend Moss. Her space adventure had changed her heart. 15

And on the velvet planet, Moss watched the little ship disappear into the stars. The planet hummed a soft, grateful song. Moss knew that Nova would return one day, and they would walk gently together again. Because the best adventures are the ones where we care for the world around us.
