The Dragonfly Detective introduces young readers to a curious dragonfly who takes on the role of a detective in the world of a children's fairy tale. Rather than a superhero or a magician, this little hero relies on observation, patience and careful thinking to make sense of the small mysteries unfolding around the pond, the meadow and the garden. Each chapter presents a gentle puzzle: a missing item, an unfamiliar sound, a friend in need of help, and the dragonfly sets out to notice the details that others overlook.
The stories are built for reading aloud at bedtime as well as for children who are beginning to read on their own. Through the dragonfly's investigations, young readers practise following clues, asking sensible questions and considering more than one explanation before deciding what happened. The tales also bring the natural world closer: the habits of insects, the changing seasons and the small dramas of pond life form the backdrop to every case, so curiosity about nature grows alongside curiosity about the mystery itself.
The book suits children roughly between five and nine years old, parents and teachers looking for short, calm stories with a clear structure, and anyone who enjoys fairy tales where kindness and cleverness matter more than speed or strength. It works well as a first introduction to detective-style storytelling, offering simple plots that can be discussed after reading and characters whose choices invite reflection. Readers will come away with a sense of how careful attention and fair-minded thinking can solve problems, and with a friendly dragonfly to remember.

Lily Pond sparkled in the morning sun. Detective Dazzle zipped over the water, her turquoise body gleaming and her four wings shimmering like glass. She carried a tiny satchel and a round magnifying glass. Everyone in the pond knew Dazzle could solve any small mystery. And today, a new one was waiting. 1
At the pond's edge, Frog hopped up and down, his lime-green skin shiny and his blue bow tie crooked. "Dazzle! Dazzle! The lily pads are disappearing!" he croaked. "Three big ones are gone since yesterday!" Dazzle landed on a reed and looked at the empty water. "Don't worry," she said. "We'll find out what happened." 2
Word spread fast around Lily Pond. A tall heron with soft bluegrey feathers and a little red tuft on his head had arrived yesterday. He stood quietly in the shallows, his long yellow beak still. "He looks suspicious," whispered Frog. "He probably ate the pads!" Dazzle shook her head. "We don't know that yet," she said. "Let's observe first." 3
The heron spoke in a gentle voice. "I only eat fish and frogs," he said. "I didn't take any lily pads." But the pond animals didn't believe him. "You're new here!" said a snail. "You must be the thief!" The heron sighed and waited. Dazzle opened her satchel. "No one is guilty without proof," she said. "I will investigate." 4
Dazzle flew low over the water, her emerald eyes scanning every ripple. She noticed something odd. A trail of tiny bubbles and little twigs floated near the north bank. "Someone has been swimming here," she said. Frog followed, his long back legs kicking. "Do you think the heron swam?" he asked. "Herons wade, they don't usually swim like this," Dazzle replied. 5
Dazzle landed on a half-eaten lily pad. With her magnifying glass, she studied the edges. "These aren't bite marks," she said. "They're cut clean, like someone gathered them." She followed the twig trail along the bank. It led to a quiet corner where the water was still. "Something is going on here," she whispered. Frog gulped. "What kind of something?" 6
Behind a curtain of tall reeds, Dazzle heard a soft splashing. She peeked through and gasped. A sturdy brown beaver with a flat tail was pushing a bundle of lily pads and twigs toward a small dam. Two smaller beavers helped, their orange teeth shining. "The beavers!" whispered Frog. "They took the pads!" Dazzle held up her magnifying glass. "Let's watch." 7
The beaver family worked together. They laid the lily pads over their new home to keep it warm and safe. "Our dam needs a roof," said the big beaver. "The pads are perfect." Dazzle flew closer, her wings humming. "Excuse me," she said politely. "I'm Detective Dazzle. Did you know the pond animals miss those lily pads?" The beaver looked up, surprised. 8
"We didn't mean to cause trouble," said the beaver. "We just arrived and needed shelter for our little ones." Dazzle nodded. "I understand," she said. "But taking things without asking makes others upset. And they blamed the heron." The beaver's bright eyes widened. "Oh no! We don't want anyone blamed for our doing." Frog hopped forward. "So the heron is innocent?" 9
Dazzle called a meeting by the big oak tree. All the pond animals gathered. The heron stood quietly, his long neck curved. "I have found the truth," Dazzle announced. "The beavers took the lily pads to protect their new home. They didn't know it would cause a mystery." Frog's golden eyes went wide. "We blamed the wrong friend!" he said. "I'm sorry, Heron." 10
The heron dipped his head. "It's all right," he said softly. "I'm glad the truth is out." Dazzle turned to the beavers. "Can we find a way to share the pond?" she asked. The big beaver nodded. "We can use twigs and leaves for our roof," he said. "And we'll leave the lily pads to grow." Frog clapped his little hands. "Teamwork!" he cheered. 11
Everyone pitched in. The heron used his long beak to gather twigs. Frog hopped from pad to pad, counting them. Dazzle supervised with her magnifying glass. The beavers rebuilt their roof with twigs and soft moss. "This is even better than lily pads," said the big beaver. The pond animals smiled. They had all worked together, and no one was left out. 12
That evening, the heron stood tall and proud. "Thank you for believing in me," he said to Dazzle. "You didn't jump to conclusions." Dazzle smiled. "That's my job," she said. "Observation and kindness solve more mysteries than blaming ever will." Frog adjusted his blue bow tie. "I learned my lesson," he said. "Next time, I'll wait for evidence." 13
From that day on, Lily Pond was a happier place. The beaver family lived safely in their new home. The heron visited often, sharing fish stories with Frog. And Detective Dazzle kept her magnifying glass ready for any new mystery. But now, everyone knew that teamwork and careful looking were the best tools of all. 14
One morning, Frog found Dazzle by the water. "What are you looking at?" he asked. Dazzle pointed her magnifying glass at a tiny footprint in the mud. "A new mystery," she said with a twinkle in her emerald eyes. Frog grinned. "I'll help!" he said. And together, they followed the trail, ready for the next adventure at Lily Pond.
