The Garden of Sleeping Seeds Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Flora skipped down the winding path to her new garden, her green rubber boots crunching on fallen leaves. She wore her favorite mustard-yellow dungarees and a wide straw sun hat to keep the sun off her freckled nose. In her canvas satchel, seed packets rustled like tiny secrets. The garden gate creaked open, and Flora gasped. Strange, twisty plants and empty flowerbeds waited for her, and a small blue-grey bird with a red ribbon on its leg chirped hello from a fence post. 1

Flora knelt beside a flowerbed and pulled out a handful of seeds. They were odd shapes and colors—some striped, some speckled, some shiny as buttons. She planted them carefully and watered them every day. But the seeds just sat there, stubborn and silent. The little bird, Pip, tilted his head and chirped, as if to say, 'Try something else!' Flora sighed. 'What do you seeds want?' she wondered aloud. 2

One morning, a tall old gardener with a fluffy white beard leaned over the gate. His faded blue overalls were patched, and he carried a wooden walking stick. 'Having trouble?' he asked kindly. Flora nodded. 'My seeds won't grow!' The old gardener chuckled. 'Ah, these are special seeds. Each one needs something different to wake up. Some like music, some like shade, and a few need the sound of laughter.' 3

Flora's amber eyes widened. 'Laughter?' she said. 'How do I give a seed laughter?' The old gardener smiled. 'You'll find a way. Just be patient and try different things.' He tipped his straw hat and shuffled off, his walking stick tapping on the path. Pip fluttered to Flora's shoulder and sang a cheerful tune. Flora looked at her seeds with new hope. 4

Back in the garden, Flora started experimenting. She sang a silly song to the first seed, and Pip joined in with his chirpiest chirps. Suddenly, a tiny green sprout poked through the soil! It wiggled and grew into a plant with leaves that looked like little musical notes. 'Music!' Flora laughed. 'This one likes music!' She danced around the sprout, and Pip whistled along. 5

Next, Flora built a small shade tent out of sticks and an old cloth for a seed that seemed to shrink from the sun. She watered it gently and waited. Days passed, and then a pale blue flower unfurled, shaped like a tiny umbrella. 'You like the shade,' Flora whispered. 'That's okay. Everyone is different.' She placed the plant under a tree, where it glowed softly in the dim light. 6

For another seed, Flora tried telling jokes. She wasn't very good at first—her jokes were mostly about carrots—but Pip would chirp and flap his wings as if he thought they were hilarious. Flora giggled at Pip's reaction, and the seed began to tremble. A plant burst up with leaves that curled like smiling mouths. 'Laughter!' Flora cheered. 'You needed laughter!' 7

Word spread among the garden creatures. A ladybug stopped by to tell Flora that the rose bush wanted company. A snail suggested that the sleepy seed might like a lullaby. Flora listened to every tip, trying new things with patience and a cheerful heart. Some seeds grew quickly, others slowly, but each one was unique. The garden filled with colors and sounds, and Flora's satchel grew lighter as her flowerbeds grew fuller. 8

One seed remained in Flora's satchel—the tiniest one, peasized and pale gold, with faint swirls on its shell. When Flora held it, she could almost see a sleepy little face. She planted it in a small terracotta pot painted with white daisies and set it on the windowsill. 'You'll grow when you're ready,' she told it. But days passed, and nothing happened. 9

Flora tried everything for the tiny seed: music, shade, jokes, even a gentle lullaby. Pip sang his sweetest song, and Flora told her funniest carrot joke, but the seed just snoozed. 'Why won't you grow?' Flora sighed. 'All the other seeds did.' The tiny seed seemed to shrink, as if it felt left out. 10

That evening, the old gardener visited again. He found Flora sitting by the pot, looking sad. 'The tiny seed won't grow,' she said. 'I've tried everything.' The old gardener sat beside her. 'Maybe it doesn't need what the others needed. Maybe it just needs you to stop comparing it with the others.' Flora blinked. 'Comparing?' 11

Flora thought about how she had measured the tiny seed against the big, fast-growing plants. She had wanted it to be like them. She took a deep breath and smiled at the little pot. 'You don't have to be like anyone else,' she told the seed. 'Just be you.' She stopped watching it every minute and simply let it be. She laughed with Pip and enjoyed the garden as it was. 12

The next morning, Flora found a surprise. The tiny seed had sprouted! A slender green stem reached up, and on top was a single golden flower that sparkled like sunshine. Its petals swirled like the markings on the seed, and it smelled of honey and rain. Flora gasped. 'You bloomed!' she whispered. The tiny flower seemed to smile back at her. 13

The old gardener came to see the golden flower. 'You see?' he said. 'It needed time and space to be itself. Every seed is unique, and growth happens at different times.' Flora nodded, understanding. She looked around her garden—at the music plant, the shade flower, the laughing leaves, and the tiny golden bloom—and felt proud. Pip chirped happily on her shoulder.
