A Chapter from the Book

The Hidden Elevator Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Leo lived on the seventh floor of a tall, old apartment building. Every day after school, he rode the elevator with his green backpack bouncing on his shoulders. The elevator was named Mabel, and she was very old. Her brass walls shone with faded gold trim, and her cracked round dial looked like a kind eye. Leo always said hello to her. 1

One rainy afternoon, Leo stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for floor seven. But then he saw something new: a small button at the bottom, marked with a shiny question mark. Leo's dark brown eyes grew wide. "What does this button do?" he wondered aloud. Mabel's amber ceiling light flickered warmly. "Only one way to find out," she said in a gentle, humming voice. 2

Leo took a deep breath. His heart went thump-thump-thump. He reached out and pressed the mystery button. Ding! The elevator shuddered and began to move—down, down, down, past the basement, past places Leo had never seen. The numbers on Mabel's dial spun and glowed. "Hold on tight," Mabel said. "We're going somewhere special." 3

The doors slid open with a soft whoosh. Leo gasped. Instead of a hallway, he saw a thick, green jungle! Huge ferns brushed the ceiling, and vines hung like curtains. The air smelled of wet leaves and flowers. A tiny parrot, no bigger than a teacup, fluttered down and landed on Leo's sneaker. "Hello! I'm Pip," she chirped, her emerald feathers ruffling. 4

Pip wore a tiny red ribbon on one leg. "You're the first visitor in years!" she said. "But to go deeper, you must solve a puzzle." She pointed her orange beak at three stone tiles on the ground. Each tile had a picture: a leaf, a flower, and a seed. "Put them in the order they grow," Pip said. Leo thought carefully. "Seed, then leaf, then flower!" he said. 5

The tiles glowed, and a path opened through the ferns. "You did it!" Pip cheered. Leo grinned, his freckles stretching. "That was fun!" he said. Mabel's voice echoed from the elevator. "Well done, Leo. But our journey isn't over. Shall we see another floor?" Leo nodded eagerly. He stepped back into the elevator, and Pip flew to his shoulder. The doors closed. 6

Ding! The elevator stopped again, and the doors opened onto a tiny airport. Small planes with bright wings sat on a shiny floor, and tiny people in blue uniforms hurried about. A little control tower blinked with lights. "Wow!" Leo whispered. But then he noticed a problem: one plane was blocking the runway, and the others couldn't take off. "We need to move it," said a tiny voice. 7

A small airport worker pointed to a puzzle box on the wall. "Solve this to unlock the tow truck," she said. The puzzle showed a grid of numbers. "What comes next: 2, 4, 6, 8...?" Leo read. He counted on his fingers. "Ten!" he said. The box clicked open, and a tiny tow truck rolled out. It pulled the plane away, and the runway was clear. "Thank you!" the workers cheered. 8

Pip flapped her wings. "You're good at puzzles!" she said. Leo felt proud. "I like figuring things out," he said. Mabel's bell jingled. "One more floor, then we must head home," she said. Leo nodded. He wondered what could be next. They stepped back into the elevator, and the doors closed with a soft click. 9

The elevator stopped with a gentle bump. The doors opened onto a room full of musical instruments! Trumpets, violins, drums, and a big tuba filled the space. An old man with fluffy white hair and a moustache sat on a stool, humming. "Welcome! I'm Grandpa Otto," he said, his blue eyes twinkling. "I keep all the forgotten instruments. But I've forgotten which one goes with this song." He hummed a tune. 10

Leo listened carefully. The tune went up and down like a slide. "That sounds like a trombone!" he said. Grandpa Otto clapped his hands. "You're right!" He handed Leo a small brass trombone. Leo tried to play, and it made a funny sound. Everyone laughed. "You have a good ear," Grandpa Otto said. "Now, I think your elevator is calling." 11

But when Leo turned to leave, the elevator doors were stuck! Mabel's voice was worried. "Oh dear, my gears are jammed. I can't move until you solve one last puzzle." A panel on the wall lit up with a riddle: "I have keys but no locks. I have space but no room. You can enter, but you can't go outside. What am I?" Leo thought hard. 12

Pip flew around his head. "Keys... space... enter..." she chirped. Leo's eyes lit up. "A keyboard!" he shouted. The panel glowed green, and the elevator doors slid open. "Clever boy!" Mabel said. Leo hugged Grandpa Otto and waved goodbye to Pip. "Thank you for your help," he said. "Come back anytime," Grandpa Otto said with a warm smile. 13

Leo stepped into the elevator, and Mabel's amber light glowed softly. "You were brave and thoughtful," she said. "That's the best way to explore." Leo smiled. "I couldn't have done it without your help," he said. The elevator rose smoothly, and the numbers on the dial spun back to seven. The doors opened onto his familiar hallway. 14

Leo walked to his apartment door, his green backpack still on his shoulders. His mom asked, "Did you have a good day?" Leo nodded. "I solved puzzles and made new friends," he said. That night, he dreamed of jungles, tiny planes, and a talking elevator. He knew he would visit Mabel again.
