The Missing Shadow

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:34

The Missing Shadow is a children's fairy tale by Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN that turns a simple, familiar phenomenon into a small adventure. When a child's shadow disappears, the everyday world suddenly feels strange and incomplete. The story follows the young hero as they try to understand where the shadow has gone and why it left, meeting talking animals, curious strangers, and gentle magical helpers along the way. Each encounter offers a small clue and a small lesson about paying attention to the world around us.

At its heart, the book is about curiosity and courage. Rather than waiting for an adult to solve the problem, the child takes responsibility, asks questions, and keeps going even when the answers are not immediate. The tale also touches on friendship, patience, and the idea that things we take for granted can be worth noticing. The language is simple and rhythmic, suited to being read aloud at bedtime or enjoyed by early readers on their own, with imagery that invites children to picture the scenes themselves.

This book is intended for young readers roughly aged five to nine, as well as parents, teachers, and storytellers looking for a short, warm tale with a touch of mystery. It works well as a classroom read-aloud or a shared family story, and it offers natural starting points for conversations about light, shadows, and what it means to look after something that belongs to you.

A Chapter from the Book

The Missing Shadow Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Oliver woke up to a sunny morning. He jumped out of bed and stretched his arms wide. But when he looked at the wall, something was wrong. His shadow was gone! There was only a blank spot where it should be. Oliver rubbed his eyes and looked again. Still no shadow. 'Where did you go?' he whispered. 1

Oliver put on his yellow t-shirt, blue shorts, and red sneakers. He grabbed his green backpack and ran outside. The sun was bright, but his shadow was still missing. He searched the garden, the sidewalk, and even under the big oak tree. No shadow anywhere. Then he noticed strange footprints on the ground. They were flat and dark, like shadow prints. 2

Oliver followed the footprints down the street and around the corner. They led to a narrow alley he had never seen before. At the end of the alley was a small, dusty door with a sign that said 'Shadow Theater.' Oliver pushed the door open and stepped inside. It was dark and quiet, but he could hear soft whispers and giggles. 3

A tiny glowing orb with wings flew up to Oliver. It was the Little Lantern, and it giggled as it circled his head. 'Welcome to the Shadow Theater!' it said in a tinkly voice. 'Are you looking for your shadow?' Oliver nodded. 'Follow me,' said the Little Lantern. 'But be quiet, the rehearsal is about to start.' 4

The Little Lantern led Oliver into a big room with a stage. On the stage, shadows were practicing a play. They danced and stretched and made funny shapes. Oliver gasped. There, in the middle, was his shadow! It wore a tiny gold star pin and was bowing to the other shadows. 'I'm going to be famous!' his shadow announced. 5

Oliver ran to the stage. 'Shadow, it's me!' he called. His shadow turned and crossed its stretchy arms. 'I don't want to come home,' it said. 'Here I can be a star! Everyone claps for me.' Oliver felt sad. 'But I miss you,' he said. 'We always have fun together.' The shadow shook its head. 'No, I want to be famous.' 6

Just then, the Director appeared. He was a tall purple shadow with a top hat and a red bow tie. He tapped his cane on the floor. 'Enough chatter!' he said. 'We need a new act for tonight's show. If you two can perform together, you can both be in the theater.' Oliver and his shadow looked at each other. 'Together?' they asked. 7

Oliver and his shadow practiced all afternoon. At first, they bumped into each other. Oliver tripped, and his shadow got tangled. But the Little Lantern cheered them on. 'Try again!' it giggled. Slowly, they learned to move as one. Oliver stretched his arms, and his shadow stretched too. They made a giant bird shape and a hopping frog shape. 8

The Director watched them practice. He didn't smile, but his crescent-moon eyes twinkled. 'Not bad,' he said. 'But you need more laughter. Shadows love to laugh.' Oliver thought hard. Then he had an idea. 'Let's do a funny dance!' he said. His shadow grinned. They practiced a wobbly, wiggly dance that made the Little Lantern laugh so hard it flickered. 9

That evening, the theater filled with shadows of all shapes and sizes. They came to see the show. Oliver's heart beat fast. 'What if we mess up?' he whispered. His shadow squeezed his hand. 'We won't,' it said. 'We're a team now.' The Little Lantern flew to the stage and glowed brightly, lighting up the whole theater. 10

The music started, and Oliver and his shadow stepped onto the stage. They did their funny dance, wiggling and wobbling. The shadows in the audience giggled. Then they made a giant elephant shape with a long trunk. The audience roared with laughter. Oliver and his shadow laughed too. They were having so much fun together. 11

At the end, the shadows clapped and cheered. The Director stood up. 'Bravo!' he said. 'You two are a wonderful team. Your shadow can stay here and perform anytime, but only if it wants to.' Oliver's shadow looked at Oliver. 'I do want to perform,' it said. 'But I want to go home with you too. Friendship is more fun than fame.' 12

Oliver hugged his shadow. 'Really?' he asked. His shadow nodded. 'Yes, I learned that shared joy is the best kind of joy.' The Director smiled. 'You are welcome back anytime,' he said. The Little Lantern gave them a warm glow. 'Come back soon!' it giggled. Oliver and his shadow waved goodbye and stepped out of the theater. 13

As they walked home, the sun was setting. Oliver's shadow stretched long and thin on the sidewalk. 'I'm glad you're back,' said Oliver. 'Me too,' said his shadow. 'I didn't know how much I missed being your shadow.' They walked in silence for a moment. Then Oliver said, 'Let's do our funny dance again tomorrow.' His shadow laughed. 'Deal!' 14

When Oliver got home, he looked at his shadow on the wall. It was just a normal shadow again, but it seemed to smile. Oliver smiled back. He realized he had never really noticed his shadow before. Now he appreciated it more than ever. Every day, they had little adventures together, and every night, Oliver said goodnight to his shadow.
