The Island of Floating Shoes Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN
Sophie stood at the bow of her family's sailboat, her yellow raincoat flapping in the salty wind. Her red boots gripped the deck as the boat dipped over a wave. She squinted through her brass compass, watching the horizon. 'Land ho!' she called, pointing at a smudge of green. But as they drew closer, Sophie gasped. The island wasn't green at all—it was covered in shoes! 1
Thousands of shoes blanketed the island. Huge boots towered like trees, tiny slippers dotted the sand like seashells, and sneakers hung from branches. Sophie spotted a pair of silver boots that sparkled in the sun. 'Where did they all come from?' she whispered. Her heart thumped with curiosity as she jumped onto the beach, her red boots sinking into the soft, shoe-strewn sand. 2
A small bird with sandy-brown feathers and one crooked wing fluttered down and landed on Sophie's shoulder. It wore a tiny red ribbon around one leg. 'Welcome to the Island of Floating Shoes!' it chirped. 'I'm Pip. Follow me!' The bird hopped along a path made of sandals, and Sophie hurried after, her eyes wide at the ocean of footwear stretching in every direction. 3
At the island's center stood a little workshop made of driftwood. Out stepped an old shoemaker with wild white hair and round spectacles. His leather apron was stained with polish. 'I'm Master Cobble,' he said, his grey eyes twinkling. 'This island catches every shoe lost at sea—from storms, shipwrecks, and windy days.' He pointed to a giant boot. 'Even that one found its way here!' 4
Master Cobble led Sophie past mountains of flip-flops and hills of high-tops. 'Each shoe has a story,' he said, picking up a tiny baby boot. 'This one belonged to a sailor's daughter.' Sophie touched a worn ballet slipper. 'And this?' she asked. 'A dancer who sailed to a new home,' he replied. Sophie's hazel eyes sparkled. Every shoe felt like a treasure. 5
Suddenly, Granny Tull appeared, tall and round with pale bluegrey skin and a shawl woven with seaweed. Shells clicked in her silver hair. 'A great tide is coming,' she said, her voice deep and calm. 'Higher than any in a hundred years. It will wash away the shoes.' Sophie's gap-toothed grin vanished. 'We have to save them!' she cried. 6
Master Cobble nodded. 'But there are thousands of shoes,' he said. 'We can't do it alone.' Sophie looked at Pip, then at the islanders gathering around—crabs, gulls, and gentle sea creatures. 'Then we'll work together!' she declared. 'Pip, you scout the tide line. Master Cobble, you gather the shoes. Granny Tull, you warn us when the water rises.' 7
Pip flew off, his red ribbon fluttering. He returned quickly, chirping, 'The tide is coming fast! It's already past the sandbar!' Sophie organized the islanders into teams. Some carried shoes to higher ground, others stacked them in the workshop. Granny Tull raised her webbed hands. 'The wave will be here by sunset,' she announced. 'Hurry!' 8
Sophie spotted a lonely boot floating away on the rising water. She waded in, her red boots sinking into the wet sand, and grabbed it. 'Gotcha!' she shouted. But when she turned, she saw a line of tiny slippers drifting toward the sea. 'Help!' she called. Pip swooped down, and together they scooped up the slippers, one by one, before the water could take them. 9
The islanders worked side by side. Crabs passed shoes along in a chain, gulls lifted them into the air, and sea turtles carried them on their backs. Sophie's arms ached, but she didn't stop. She noticed a strange shoe—a long, curly one like a snail shell —and tucked it safely under her raincoat. 'Every shoe matters,' she panted, 'no matter how odd!' 10
Just as the sun dipped low, Granny Tull called out, 'The wave is here!' A wall of water rushed toward the island. Sophie and the islanders held their breath. But the shoes were safe—piled high in the workshop and on the hill. The wave crashed against the shore and slid back, leaving the island sparkling. 'We did it!' Sophie cheered, and everyone danced. 11
Master Cobble picked up the curly shoe Sophie had saved. 'This one,' he said, 'belonged to a sea captain who sailed around the world.' He handed it to Granny Tull. She smiled, her dark eyes soft. 'I always thought it was just a funny old shoe,' she said. 'But it has a story.' Sophie nodded. 'Every object has a story,' she said, 'and every story deserves respect.' 12
That evening, the islanders held a festival. Lanterns made of tiny shoes glowed along the beach. Pip perched on Sophie's shoulder, his red ribbon bright in the firelight. Master Cobble told stories about the shoes they'd saved—tales of lost sailors, dancing girls, and explorers. Sophie listened, her brass compass warm against her chest, feeling proud of what they'd done together. 13
As the stars came out, Sophie's family sailed back to the island. Her mother hugged her tight. 'We were so worried!' she said. Sophie grinned her gap-toothed grin. 'I found the most amazing place,' she said. 'And I learned something important.' She showed them the curly shoe. 'Every shoe has a story, and every story deserves kindness.' 14
Master Cobble gave Sophie a tiny silver shoe as a thank-you. 'Keep it safe,' he said. 'It belonged to a girl just like you.' Sophie tied it to her compass cord. Pip chirped, 'Come back soon!' Granny Tull waved, her webbed hand leaving ripples in the air. Sophie waved back, her heart full. She knew she would never look at a lost shoe the same way again.
