A Chapter from the Book

The Missing Socks Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Henry was seven years old, with messy dark brown hair that stuck up in tufts and a gap-toothed grin. Every Saturday, he helped his mom sort the laundry. And every Saturday, something strange happened. One sock—just one—was always missing. Not a pair. Just one lonely sock. Henry stared at the pile. Where could it go? 1

Henry checked under the bed, behind the couch, and even inside his red sneakers. No missing sock. He asked his mom, but she just shrugged. "Socks disappear," she said. "It's a laundry mystery." Henry didn't believe in mysteries. He believed in answers. So he made a plan. This Saturday, he would hide beside the washing machine and watch. He would solve the laundry mystery once and for all. 2

Saturday came. Henry wore his brightest yellow T-shirt and his most mismatched socks—one blue, one green. He waited until the washing machine rumbled its last spin. Then he hid behind a basket of towels. The laundry room was quiet. Too quiet. Suddenly, a tiny light flickered near the wall. Henry crawled closer. There, behind the machine, was a tiny doorway. It was no bigger than his hand. 3

The tiny doorway glowed with soft golden light. Henry took a deep breath and peeked inside. A whole miniature world stretched out before him! Little houses made of socks lined a winding street. Sock trees waved in the breeze. Tiny creatures hurried back and forth, carrying buttons and thread. Henry's mouth fell open. He had found Sock City! 4

A tiny creature with fluffy white hair and round black button eyes stepped forward. He wore a striped sock as a cape and a thimble as a hat. "Welcome to Sock City!" he said. "I'm Pip, the mayor. You must be the boy from the laundry." Henry nodded, too surprised to speak. Pip smiled. "We've been borrowing your socks. I hope you don't mind." 5

Before Henry could answer, a little creature with curly black hair in two puff buns bounced up. She wore a doll-sized dress made from a pink sock and carried a bottle-cap satchel. "Hi! I'm Mabel!" she said. "You're big! Look at your shoes!" She grabbed Henry's hand and pulled him down the street. "Come on! I'll show you everything!" 6

Mabel showed Henry how socks became blankets. "When it's cold, we snuggle under them," she explained. She showed him a house made of blue socks, with a door of red sock. "We use the heels for windows!" she giggled. Then she pointed to a row of colorful socks hanging like flags. "Those are for decoration. Aren't they pretty?" Henry nodded. His missing socks had surprising purposes. 7

But not everything in Sock City was cheerful. Pip the mayor looked worried. "We have a problem," he said. "We use socks for everything. But now we're running out of matching pairs. Without pairs, we can't make blankets or houses. We need your help, Henry." Henry scratched his tufty hair. What could he do? 8

Pip led Henry to a small workshop. Inside, an elderly creature with wispy grey hair and round glasses sat knitting. His coat was a patchwork of odd socks. "This is Grandpa Wool," said Pip. "He's our master knitter." Grandpa Wool looked up and squinted. "Ah, a visitor!" he said. "I'm afraid I've forgotten where I put my yarn again." 9

Henry looked around the workshop. Piles of single socks lay everywhere. "Why not use mismatched socks?" he asked. "They're still useful!" Mabel tilted her head. "But they don't match," she said. "So?" said Henry. "They're colorful! You could make new things." Grandpa Wool's eyes twinkled. "The boy is right!" he said. "We've been stuck in our ways." 10

Grandpa Wool picked up a red sock and a blue sock. "What if we sew them together?" he said. "We could make a big blanket!" Mabel clapped her hands. "And we can cut them into shapes!" she cried. "Flowers! Stars!" Pip smiled. "We can make a patchwork quilt for the whole town!" Henry grinned. "I can bring more socks from home," he said. "The ones without pairs." 11

Everyone in Sock City worked together. Henry brought a bag of mismatched socks from his drawer. Mabel cut them into squares. Grandpa Wool sewed them into a giant quilt. Pip organized a team to hang colorful sock flags across the streets. The whole town buzzed with excitement. Even the tiniest creatures helped by threading needles. Sock City had never been so busy—or so happy. 12

When the quilt was finished, it covered the town square like a rainbow. The creatures cheered. "It's the most beautiful thing we've ever made!" said Mabel. Grandpa Wool patted Henry's hand. "You showed us that things which seem useless can have surprising purposes," he said. "Thank you, Henry." Pip gave Henry a tiny sock badge. "You'll always be welcome in Sock City." 13

Henry said goodbye to his new friends. He crawled back through the tiny doorway and into his laundry room. Everything looked the same, but Henry felt different. He looked at his mismatched socks and smiled. From then on, he never worried about missing socks. He knew they were safe in Sock City, being useful in wonderful ways. 14

The next Saturday, Henry sorted the laundry again. His mom held up a single sock. "Another one gone!" she said. Henry just grinned his gap-toothed grin. "It's okay, Mom," he said. "It's probably having an adventure." His mom laughed. "You're a funny kid, Henry." But Henry knew a secret. And secrets are the best kind of fun.
