The Crystal Lake

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:22

The Crystal Lake is a children's fairy tale by Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN that invites young readers into a quiet, enchanted world built around a lake whose clear waters seem to hold more than ordinary reflections. The story follows its young characters as they discover the lake and the secrets surrounding it, learning that curiosity opens doors but also brings responsibilities. Along the way, the tale blends gentle wonder with small, meaningful challenges that the characters must face together.

Through its narrative, the book explores themes children can easily recognise in their own lives: friendship, honesty, respect for nature, and the courage to do what is right even when it is difficult. The lake itself becomes a kind of mirror, reflecting not only the sky but also the choices and feelings of those who visit it. Rather than relying on loud adventure, the story builds its magic through atmosphere, imagery, and the slow unfolding of a mystery that rewards patience and kindness.

Written in accessible language and suited to being read aloud or enjoyed independently, The Crystal Lake is aimed at young readers in the early primary years and at parents, teachers, and storytellers looking for a calm, thoughtful fairy tale. It offers a space for children to imagine, to ask questions about trust and responsibility, and to see how small acts of care can protect something precious.

A Chapter from the Book

The Crystal Lake Yavuz DEMİRKIRAN

Ella skipped down the forest path, her yellow rain boots splashing in puddles. She carried a small round satchel and wore blue overalls over a striped shirt. Her curly dark-brown pigtails bounced with each step. Today, she was exploring a part of the woods she had never seen before. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, and birds sang sweetly. 1

Suddenly, Ella stopped. Through the trees, she saw a lake sparkling like a thousand diamonds. But when she looked into the water, she gasped. Instead of her own reflection, she saw a happy memory: her birthday party with a big cake and laughing friends. The magical lake showed memories, not reflections! 2

Ella visited the lake every day. Each time, the water showed a different happy memory: her first day of school, a picnic with her family, building a snowman. The lake seemed to know exactly what would make her smile. She told her friends about it, and they came too. The lake showed their happiest moments, and everyone left feeling warm and joyful. 3

But one morning, Ella ran to the lake and found it cloudy and gray. No memories appeared. She hurried to the village and noticed something strange. Her friend Sam couldn't remember his favorite birthday. Her neighbor, Mrs. Green, forgot the day she got her puppy. The villagers were forgetting their happiest moments! 4

Ella felt worried. She sat by the cloudy lake, wondering what to do. Just then, a graceful white swan glided across the water. Its feathers glowed softly, and a silver feather tipped one wing. Around its neck hung a braided cord of blue beads with a small leather pouch. The swan looked at Ella with calm, wise eyes. 5

"Follow me," the swan said in a soft voice. Ella blinked in surprise. A talking swan! But she trusted the gentle bird. The swan led her to the middle of the lake, where the water parted like curtains. A path of dry stones appeared, leading down into the depths. Ella took a deep breath and followed. 6

Down and down they went, until they reached a hidden underwater palace. It was made of shimmering shells and glowing pearls. The walls sparkled with soft light. Ella stared in wonder. The wise swan swam ahead, its blue beaded cord swaying gently. "In here," the swan said, guiding Ella through a grand archway. 7

Inside the palace, Ella saw a small water spirit. It was childsized and shimmering, with a translucent pale-blue body like flowing water. Large round teal eyes looked at her shyly. Long rippling hair floated around its face, and faint glowing droplets drifted from its hands. A crown of tiny shells and pearls sat on its head. 8

"Why did you take the memories?" Ella asked gently. The water spirit looked down. "I have no memories of my own," it whispered. "I collect them to feel happy." Ella's heart ached for the lonely spirit. She understood now. The spirit had taken the villagers' memories to fill its own emptiness, but it had only made everyone sad. 9

"You don't have to be lonely anymore," Ella said. "I'll be your friend. And we can make new happy memories together!" The water spirit's teal eyes widened with hope. "Really?" it asked. Ella nodded and took its cool, watery hand. The wise swan watched with a gentle smile, its silver-tipped wing glowing softly. 10

Ella and the water spirit spent the afternoon playing in the palace. They built towers of seashells and raced glowing fish. Ella taught the spirit to skip stones, and the spirit showed Ella how to blow bubbles that shimmered like rainbows. They laughed and laughed, creating brand new happy memories together. The spirit's translucent body glowed brighter with each moment. 11

As they played, the water spirit began to share the memories it had collected. One by one, they floated back to the villagers above. Sam remembered his birthday. Mrs. Green remembered her puppy. The lake began to sparkle again, clearer and brighter than ever. The water spirit smiled, feeling lighter and happier than it had in a long time. 12

The wise swan led Ella and the water spirit back to the surface. The spirit blinked in the sunlight. "I've never been outside before," it said. Ella showed it the forest and introduced it to her friends. At first, the villagers were surprised, but soon they welcomed the spirit with warm smiles. The spirit's teal eyes sparkled with joy. 13

From that day on, the water spirit was never lonely. Ella visited the lake often, and they made new happy memories together. The lake showed these new memories to everyone who looked into its waters. The villagers remembered their joy, and they shared their happiest moments with each other. The spirit learned that friendship was the best memory of all. 14

The wise swan still glided across the lake, watching over them. Its blue beaded cord swayed gently, and its silver-tipped wing shone in the sun. Ella knew the swan had guided her to the spirit for a reason. Sometimes, the best adventures come from helping someone else find happiness. The lake sparkled, full of memories old and new. 15

Ella sat by the lake with the water spirit, watching the sunset. "Thank you for being my friend," the spirit said. "Thank you for showing me that memories are meant to be shared," Ella replied. They smiled at each other. The lake shimmered, showing a beautiful memory of their friendship. And Ella knew that sharing happy moments makes friendship grow strong.
